They won’t tell you where they buried the witch, but she’s a mile out of town, in the wild roses. They grow white because of her bones. They smell like decay. They won’t tell you why they buried the witch, but she’d been running around with the preacher man. They were in love from the moment he saw her. They sounded like fiddles. They won’t tell you how they buried the witch, but she screamed when they tore her baby from her arms. They drug her across the dirt road. They split her skin with an ax.

They won’t tell you when they buried the witch, but she was only seventeen, fresh as spring daisies. They brandished her unfit for a grave marker. They wear guilt like a badge of honor.
