A visard is a mask made from black velvet, which was worn by women in the sixteenth century while traveling or in public to protect their skin from sunlight. It was not fastened to the head with a strap - rather, it was held in place with the wearer clasping a bead attached to the inside of the mask between their teeth, rendering them unable to speak.
