Octopus!
Fine Motor: I used a hole punch on the dot stickers to make "suckers" for the octopus. Boo loves putting stickers on paper.
Gross Motor: we explored the house today looking for circles! We found plates, rings, apples, and this book.

O!
Fine Motor: Glue stick and tissue paper.
Gross Motor: Octopus dance! We sat on the floor and waved our arms around like octopus tentacles while singing silly songs.
Fall Break
We took a couple weeks off of school to travel. We went to Indiana to visit my mom and sisters and Boo’s 12 cousins and the following weekend we were at a convention in Maryland.
One great reason to homeschool is taking breaks whenever you want!
Field Trip!
Boo had another outing today. The teacher read "Stone Soup" while the kids pretended to make soup. Then they ate the soup that she had already prepared. I like getting Boo out around kids her age.
The Community Center has big inflatables set up on Wednesday mornings for kids to jump and play so after the cooking class we did that for a bit. Boo is still in the phase of thinking all the toys she's ever seen belong to her so it's good to interact with others and learn how to take turns.
When we came home Boo got her first jar of play-doh. I bought it as an introduction to using scissors but she also enjoyed the cookie cutters that were shapes she recognizes.

I is for ice cream! We practiced gluing in today's fine motor activity. I did one as an example and then let Boo work on her own. The best part was that she came back a few hours later asking to glue some more.
Her gross motor activity today was jumping and counting. I taped 3 spaces for her to jump in and counted 1, 2, 3 while she jumped. She's starting to repeat the numbers when we count and her jumping is improving as well.

I
We're continuing the tissue paper and double sided tape activity with the letter I. She knows what to do now but still doesn't quite understand covering up all the tape. Today was a bit different too because after completing the I, Boo asked for more! So we played with the dot stickers again until she was ready to run off.
We walked an I and practiced balance for our gross motor activity. She's done the beam in gymnastics but still likes to have someone holding her hand.

Circles!
I realized that last week I didn't post about our circle day. And it has one of my most brilliant activities.
When I'm in planning mode, sometimes I just walk through my house looking at things and waiting for inspiration to strike. That happened when I saw our old bottle drying rack that I still haven't gotten around to getting rid of.
I cut circles out of foam and used a hole punch on them. They were just a bit too small so we sang, "down, down, down!" and "up, up, up!" while putting them on the sticks.
While playing with it I realized this could be used for counting, color sorting, short/tall, and who knows what else.
Boo enjoyed it so much she played with it off and on all day. Win!
For gross motor, we danced around a circle of train tracks again while singing Pop Goes the Weasel. Boo loves to clap and jump when I say pop!

Up and Down
Age 2; Quarter 1; Theme- Elephant; Topic- Up and Down
We're fortunate in that we live in a community with a lot of activities for children. And since Boo spends A LOT of time with me, I like getting us both out of the house. This morning was our first pottery painting class and it was Boo's first experience with a paintbrush. I'm looking forward to getting the finished plate next week.
Since yesterday's fine motor activity ended up being more about up-and-down than circles, we did a circle activity today. Boo loved putting the stickers on the paper and learned a new word- dot.
We also had speech therapy today and Boo showed off all her new words for the therapist. We have her 6- month evaluation in 2 weeks.
I didn't have a specific gross motor activity since we had extra stuff going on today and she's been saying up-and-down on the slide and steps for awhile now.
Dice Dice Baby
Age 2; Quarter 1; Theme- Elephant; Topic- Count to 3
Boo's first experience with glue! We're tabletop gamers so there are A LOT of dice in our home. Boo is familiar with them and even has her own bag. So it was a natural step to include them in our schooling. She quickly picked up how the glue stick works and to put the circles on the dots I'd drawn. We had a few extras to practice gluing. These activities usually hold her interest for about 10 minutes but I enjoy the time we're spending together and I really love when I see something click.
Jumping from space to space while counting was supposed to be our gross motor game but galloping across the table was clearly much more fun. It then became a matching game though and I really enjoyed watching her find the right number of dots on the dice.
Song of the Week: Apples and Bananas
E is for Elephant
Age 2; Quarter 1; Theme- Elephant; Topic- Letter E
Our fine motor activity was putting tissue-paper scraps onto the E-shaped double-sided tape. She likes to put all the paper in a pile then dump off what doesn't stick.
For a gross motor activity, I played Henry Mancini's Baby Elephant Walk and we danced around moving our arms up and down like elephant trunks. Next time I'll get some streamers or ribbons to make our trunks longer and more fun to wave about.
We're still singing Apples and Bananas and Boo says all of the vowel sounds in 'eat' but isn't changing the sounds in apple or banana. It's a fun song to sing though and I like that she takes the lead and says what vowel sound we'll sing next.
Stop! Go!
Age 2; Quarter 1; Topic- Opposites Stop/ Go
I didn't get any pictures because we worked it into our regular day instead of doing anything special.
We practiced stop-and-go while walking across the parking lot, playing drums, pushing trains, and me crawling around with her on my back. I really liked the last one because I didn't move until she said "go" so she's learning a new word.
I started with stop-and-go even though there other pairs that she's already started learning because of the safety ramifications. If I say "stop" I want her to freeze without thinking.
Circle of Life
Age 2; Quarter 1; Theme- Apple; Topic- Circle
Today's fine motor activity was changed mid- stream when Boo declined to have anything to do with the apple stamp I made. It happens. *shrug* So I drew a tree and we made fingerprint apples. When you're working with a toddler, you have to be flexible.
Our gross motor games went through a few iterations before becoming a dance circle. Boo loves to be in any kind of enclosure.
She also played Monday's Airplane game again so that was fun. I love when she remembers and repeats an activity.
We're still singing Apples and Bananas regularly and she's starting to pick up more of the words.
1, 2, 3!
Age 2; Quarter 1; Theme- Apple; Topic- Counting to 3
Boo had a doctor's appointment in the morning and I had to work between nap and bedtime so we didn't accomplish much.
We practiced counting to three by stacking three blocks together and by building three towers.
A is for Apple
Age 2; Quarter 1; Theme- Apple; Topic- Letter A
Our fine motor activity was changed at the last minute when I realized I had forgotten to get contact paper. But double-sided rug tape worked amazingly well! Her favorite method was to put all of the tissue paper onto the page then shake off what didn't stick and repeat.
Today's gross motor game was A is for Airplane! Basically hold out your arms like wings and run through the house yelling, "wheeee".
Our song for the week is Apples and Bananas.
And we'll continue pointing out everything around us that starts with the letter A as well as emphasizing the A with her magnet and bath letter toys.
Red!
Some days go exactly as planned and some... don't. Boo enjoyed marching on the blocks but doesn't yet get the concept of colors. I think I'm going to switch Thursdays to a different topic because colors are a stretch right now.
Yesterday she wanted me to draw faces in all the circles and she asked to do that again today. I love all the words she has now.
We didn't really get to anything else today. I had a sorting activity set up but she was more interested in getting out the trains that I had put away. She's getting pretty good at putting the tracks together and I enjoy watching her play independently. Besides, what's the point of homeschooling if we can't play hooky occasionally?
Circles!
Today I combined our homeschool lesson of circles with a Learning Without Worksheets Trace to Erase challenge. I drew circles on the wall with chalk and Boo painted over the lines with water. This activity was a big hit!
For our gross motor skills, I made a circle out of train tracks and we walked around singing Pop Goes The Weasel. All of my pictures are blurry in-motion pics because she LOVED doing this and she was really getting into the song.
For fine motor, we drew somewhat circular shaped objects and practiced tracing.
This was our song today. We watched at about a half dozen times. Boo started out pointing to each body part as they said it (except when Big Bird says beak she pointed to her feet 😂) and then she was drawing a circle in the air around the body part. I love Sesame Street so very much.
We'll continue the lesson with pointing out circles around the house.
1-2-3!
We're in the first quarter of age 2 alternative schooling and we're practicing counting to 3.
For gross motor skills, I set up 3 boxes of different height and Boo climbed up and down while I counted to 3 forward and backward. She's very active and loved climbing up and down.
Later we worked on fine motor skills by stacking 3 blocks in different ways. Boo is very into trains right now so she didn't want to play blocks for long before going back to her trains.
I've played this song several times today and her favorite part is the stomping.
We'll continue counting to three throughout the evening as we play with trains, balls, and books.
