Hi I'm Mandy, the author of a series that is still in the development phase. Things have slowed with how crazy school got as I'm going into my last two semesters(I'll be done in December!!)
I give random tips when I have the time to blog. Do look through my drabbles and other nonesense. Eventually there will be a book.
I will also give out writing challenges(when I have them), which you can complete and them submit or tag me in! Tag: thewritingpirate
When the Creator left Earth, she was free to do as she pleased with the planet she had. Earth has a bad habit of creating something and obsessing over it for a while before creating something new and obsessing over that. This lead to many things being created, but not cared for.
Rodin saw this as a spell for disaster. She went to Earth and made a few suggests, which made Earth realize her mistakes. She had to change, but didn’t want to. She found so much joy in creating, but knew Rodin was right.
After a long time, Earth did something that shocked Rodin and Kirin. She split herself in half. One called herself Tuuli, the other called himself Maa. Together they still shared the goal of creating and sustaining life, but now each had their own job. Tuuli was the creator and Maa would sustain. Rodin was skeptical at first, but the change quickly showed to be a good thing as Maa immediately went back to Tuuli’s previous creations to help them continue to live. This still left Maa creating things, but only so those that were already created could live.
Tuuli was her happy self and continued to create, often times coming back to Maa to help him when he needed it.
Maa would go on to have many children. The seasons, the forest, the sea and Dwarfs. Tuuli mothered death, time, knowledge and the Humans.
Rodin herself created Faes, seeing the world needed more magic. Kirin created Elves.
I’m really sorry about that! I’ve been in my last semester of university and it’s been INSANE. Had to stop writing cause I just didn’t have the time. Also had a bit of anxiety issues, but those are mostly taken care of.
I do plan on getting back into writing at some point after the new year. Most likely after I get Etsy up and running, but we’ll see. I am actually kinda still writing... Started an rp blog: @mercy-doctor-of-overwatch
Also follow my Etsy shop blog! @madlyunique
Or my personal @pbg146
I’ll be back and more active soon!
Also I’m super surprised my 5 bones of Characterization post is still going around...Thank you guys for that!
Thank you Tumblr for not notifying me of this. -_-
@croutonsforcroutons I’m really sorry I took so long to respond!
I really appreciate your input though and am saving that for the future because what you said does give me good ideas and a better understanding of vitiligo.
I’m still working on the character, but so far I know she’ll be my Godess of Fall and one of the Sister Seasons. I actually kinda put my book on pause because I had an epiphany about changing the setting to medieval times instead of modern times. So I’m playing with that idea and trying to fix my plot.
I feel like there needs to be some kind of post for MCU fans on How To Write About Africa because I feel like there’s a lot of people out there who want to write about Wakanda and T'Challa but are worried about being problematic and that makes me sad because there’s SO MUCH GREAT meta to be had about T'Challa and Wakanda but at the same time there’s a lot of legitimate concerns about perpetuating racist stereotypes and yeah.
T'Challa and Wakanda could be such a great way to introduce people to amazing sci-fi concepts that people should know
It’s so easy to be like ‘just try it!’ but the problem with this website is that people don’t think its okay for people to make mistakes. I’ve gotten messages from people who want to write about T’Challa/Wakanda but are nervous about how their work will be perceived and its so sad.
We really need to gather some people who’d be interested in writing a nice little info post!
Here’s something I’ve learned while writing about other cultures, don’t use the linked posts until AFTER you have your first draft. You are going to be too worried about getting things right that it’s going to affect your story. Make all the mistakes you have to, I’ve made a few of mistakes about my culture so it’s okay.
Take your time, get your first draft, preferably even get your second draft, and then you can worry about this, this is also when you can start looking for opinions.
Now there’s also @writingwithcolor they always have useful stuff, here’s their navigation page it’s got a lot of useful info, from books you can read to stereotypes and tropes to inspiration and description.
Anyone remember that Avenger Mob AU I was writing?!
It’s been a few years since I’ve mentioned it, or even thought about starting on rewriting it. Real life knocked me over and I think I’m back up. We’ll see though.
For those of you who don’t know what I’m talking about here’s the link.
I’m currently working on an outline for the rewrite and it’s at 23 chapters so far.I’m super excited to be working on this again and can’t wait to here what you guys think!
Rei was sitting writing in his journal. He wanted to document most of his travels and did a good job of it. He’d lost track of dates and was currently trying to figure out what day it was. The Idarian’s didn’t have a real calendar, they just went off of what color the leaves on the trees were and when to harvest their food.
“Huh...”Rei said softly as he wrote today’s date in the page.
“What?”Naomi asked, looking up from her weaving, her ears twitching.
Rei blinked and looked at her. “Oh...I just realized today’s my birthday. I’m officially 18.” he smiled at her. It was still weird talking to her, especially after last week.
Naomi looked confused. “Birthday?”
“Yeah, it’s the day I was born. We usually have a big party for it...this year would’ve been huge since I’m 18.” Rei smiled, thinking about all the people and the cake.
“You have a specific day that you celebrate the day you were born?” Naomi had set down her weaving and moved a little closer to him.
“Yeah...don’t you guys?” Rei was now a bit confused, though now that he thought about it, they hadn’t had any birthday celebrations.
“We celebrate births during the Solstices, the Planting Celebration, and the Last Harvest. Mine is celebration during the Harvest while yours would be celebrated at Summer Solstice.” She pulled out a bracelet from her pocket. “We’re all given beads that are made from something that was really plentiful during the celebration. The last two times have been acorns that were smashed and made into a paste to make beads from.” she pointed to the last two beads.
Rei looked at the bracelet, a little puzzles. “Wait, is that why some people are winter’s old and other are planters old?”
Naomi nodded, smiling. “Yup!”
“Can I see your bracelet?”Rei asked.
Naomi nodded and handed it to him, letting him inspect it closely, like he did anything new he was given.
Rei counted the beads and blinked having not realized Naomi was older than him. She was 20 and he’d just turned 18...She didn’t look older than 16 and should be married by now, at least in his people’s standards. He notice two that were glass beads, one was green and the other was orange. “Why are these two different?”
Naomi pointed to the green one. “This is the beginning, it was given to my mother the day I was born.” She pointed to the orange one. “I was given this the year I became a Keeper.”
Rei nodded. “Why is your first one green? It’d make more sense if it were brown or red to go with the Harvest.”
Naomi shrugged. “It’s what they had on hand when I was born.”
Rei handed her back her bracelet, nodding. “Do do you celebrate certain years more than others? Like today would’ve been a big celebration for me because I turned 18.”
Naomi blinked. “What’s so special about being 18?”
Rei opened his mouth to reply, but closed it as he had no valid reason. Being with the Idarian’s made him question a lot of traditions his people had. “I have no idea.”
A new tag I’m adding, a link will go up on the Characters page. Basically anything with this tag is stemming from the idea that I got last week. The setting really has changed, but so has most of the story. It’s just easier to say it’s a new setting since the change in setting has changed the story.
The drabbles I post are gonna be confusing until I can get my brain functional enough to start writing in a proper order. For now I just need to get these ideas out.
“Wait! WAIT” Rei called as he nearly tripped up the stairs going to the top of the wall that sorrounded the castle.
His oldest brother helped him up, looking confused. “They’re getting too close, we need to-”
“NO.”Rei panted. “They’re messengers!”
His brother blinked. “Messengers?”
Rei nodded and pointed at the three people approaching on horse back. “They’re carrying two flags. One bares the Idarian symbol for peace. If we kill them now then the rest of the tribe will destroy the kingdom without question.”
“He has a point. The Idarian’s are a people of assassins and thieves. If they wanted to kill someone they would’ve done it by now and we would have never known they were in out land.” One of the older generals spoke up.
Rei’s brother looked at the general, to Rei, to the approaching people and bakc to the general. “You’re sure about this?”
The general nodded.
“Open the gates! Tell the king he has visitors!” He barked the orders and headed down the stairs, going into the castle.
Rei sighed and smiled at the general. “Thank you.”
The general nodded and walked down the stairs with Rei. “How did you know all that?”
“I read it in some books that I found in the back of the library. I need to talk to someone about getting them rebound. They’re falling apart at the spines.” Rei said.
The general blinked and nodded. The back of the library was a far off place no one ever went to. Even the scribes didn’t go back there as they’re the ones who say it’s haunted.
The two walked into the castle and Rei scampered off to his usual space in the walls to listen to the meeting.
Yes I’m still alive! School’s been nuts and I’m battling with a crazy amount of anxiety, which I’m getting help for. I don’t think I’ll be going back to updating this regularly, but we’ll see how the summer goes. I’m set to graduate in the fall and am hoping to get back to writing sometime after that, but we’ll see how things go.
My characters have rarely shown up in my head, but honestly I think I needed the break. I was stuck with what to even do. I have these characters, some that weren’t developed very well and I was struggling to write them. I had some I couldn’t even figure out how they fit into the story. So now everything is in shambles and I’m just waiting for something to happen.
Over the past two weeks my characters have slowly started showing themselves again. It was mostly the Gods and that’s been fun to think about. Sunday morning I had a brilliant idea which kind of changes everything.
I’m gonna change the setting. Instead of trying to make this story work on a modern day Earth(that isn’t really our Earth), it’ll be in it’s own world. Humans and all fantasy creatures will exist, but it won’t be very modern. I haven’t picked an exact era to base it one, but there’s gonna be magic so I’m not too sure I care.
And then I think I’m gonna make Rei a prince. Fourth in line for the throne. He’d still be an elf. I’m still playing around with this idea.
Naomi would be part of a nomadic tribe, which would make sense as the Idarian people were originally nomadic people when they were still around. Which now it might be that they still around and Naomi and her father are Idarian.
As for Carly, Kenny, and Jared....I’m not sure what I’m going to do with them. I think Carly will come along later in the story since Rei and Naomi are gonna go on an adventure, but we’ll see.
Yes I’m taking a bit of a break. My queue has been running this blog for a while now and I don’t really have the mental energy to sit and refill it. School is stressing me out and the my boyfriend went and broke his ankle in three places and he’s in Georgia. So my main goal is just getting out of bed, to work school, and to get homework done. At this point my queue is done and I’m just not going to worry about this blog for a little while. Once I get my stress levels back to normal I’ll be back.
I might still post random drabbles, but that will be about it. I promise I’ll be coming back!
Being young Goddesses gave the Seasons a lot of freedom. They were each still exploring how to use their powers, along with how to convince the Spirits to bring what weather was needed. They were also experimenting with their looks. Vor and Talem seemed to be the ones changing their appearances the most. Vor enjoyed long hair, but having it curly cause way too many problems.
Talem wasn’t even sure she wanted hair. She had long white hair at the moment and had just settled on that cause any other style she tried she didn’t like.
Vor was busy braiding her hair and didn’t notice what her sister was doing. Once the braiding was done she sprouted flowers from a pot of dirt she kept close and weaved them into the braid. She turned to show Talem and jumped in surprise.
Talem had sprouted large, curly horns from the top of her head and was wrapping a scarf made of snow around the front of her head and the bottom of the horns. She smiled at Vor them reached down and picked up,Icarus, her baby Kudu that Rodin had given her a few weeks ago.
“Now we match!”she smiled brightly, holding Icarus under his front legs, his body dangling down. He bleated at Vor, ear twitching. Talem seemed so happy about the fact that her favorite Companion now matched her.
Vor smiled and chuckled, patting Icarus’ head. “You two look adorable.”
Talem grinned and set Icarus down, standing up and going off to do her own thing for the day. Icarus looked at Vor before trotting off after Talem.
This might be the dumbest question but here I go. So I have this story in which two characters fall in love and they perfectly complement each other. They once met when they were teens but they never saw the other again until twenty years later. They both live in the same town but they are from different social classes. Ok my problem is that I can’t find a way of reunite them together again. Some advice?
That’s not a dumb question at all. There are lots of ways these two people might come into contact again after twenty years:
- they bump into each other someplace in town
- they both show up at the same party or other event
- they see each other at a school reunion
- they meet through a mutual friend
- their parents know each other and set up a date or meeting between them
- they meet through work or at one person’s workplace
I hope that helps!
