âHey Ava Iâm bi And Nonbinary, goodbye,â Humberto said, before walking in the other direction, internally screaming to himself. ((Jurassic-Reptil))
The suddenness of the statement had her more startled than the actual content of the information. Ava hardly had time to blink at him before Humberto was attempting to retreat, but she wasnât going to let him leave like that. If she did, heâd think the worst of her reaction for sure, when that was far from the case. âBerto! Hold on!â she called out before taking a few long strides to catch up to him. Her hand landed on his shoulder and she ducked around to face him, offering a small smile. âYou donât have to run away like you just dropped a grenade. Thank you for telling me. Not that you /had/ to, but Iâm glad you felt comfortable enough to. Im bi, too, and if youâd like me to use different pronouns just let me know.â
Humberto could have sworn he felt a weight had been lifted off his shoulders. He hugged Ava tightly, hiding his face away in her shoulder. âThank youâŠ.â he muttered quietly.
He stayed like that for a few moments before pulling away. âIâŠ. I still like he/him pronouns⊠along with they/them pronouns, but I donât like being called a manâŠâ he admitted, rubbing the back of his neck.
Ava let him embrace her and returned the hug an instant later. She didnât pull away until he did, and listened quietly as he spoke. âOkay, duly noted. Iâll remember that,â she nodded before wrapping an arm around his shoulders, âIf you want to talk more about it Iâll listen. No judge here.â
Humberto nodded. âWell for starters Iâm glad Iâm not the only bi person in the academy,â he said. âBut second the only other personwho knows is Brandon,â he admitted. âI came out to Brandon on accidentâŠ. but Iâve kinda decided to come out to everyone on the team but not ready to beâŠ. publicly out.â
The fact that she was the first person he intentionally told made her smile just a bit wider before toning it down once more. She shrugged slightly and gave his shoulders a small squeeze. âYou donât owe anyone explanations, take it at your own pace and your own terms. I know Brandon did the big press announcement thing, but itâs not like... a requirement. You make your own rules on this.â

Ava rolled her eyes, a hint of a smile lingering on her lips. âBecause thatâs just not how nicknames work!â Not the most logical defense, but it was true! She crossed her arm, leaning against the window slightly as she looked over at him, âI think it suits you perfectly.âÂ
The bus rolled down the street and she breathed a sigh of relief. âYou know, Iâve never played hooky before. Not once.â
Humberto opened his mouth and paused. He thought for a moment before swearing in Spanish. âDamn it, youâre right,â he said, shaking his head with a sigh. âOf course you do, you made the nickname.â
âIâm.. really not surprised,â Humberto admitted. âI only played hooky once, but thatâs because my parents took me out of school to see a circus.â
The small smile lingered on her lips and she nudged him lightly, âThat doesnât count, not if your parents were the ones taking you out of class. I mean really going MIA.âÂ
âDid you like the circus? We would go to the zoo as a family sometimes, or at least me and my parents would when my older siblings were too old for it.â
Humberto smiled slightly. âI donât even have cousins,â He admitted. âI always wanted a sibling though,â he admitted. âI used to babysit before I found out about my powersâŠâ
âMy grandfatherâs the only family Iâve had for a long timeâŠâ Humberto mused sadly. âIâm his only grandchild, so heâs always been worried with this superhero stuff, but heâs glad I have a backup plan if this falls through.â
Ava rested her hand on top of his and gave a small squeeze, and nudged his shoulder. Her tone was playful but soft enough to be sincere as she spoke, âAt least you have each other. If heâs gonna only have one, I guess youâre not the worst grandkid to be stuck with.â
She let out a small sigh, âI would have my sister Awilda and her son... but they want nothing to do with me. Her daughter was the White Tiger before me but after Hector, so... yeah. Hard to see another family member carry on the name. Theyâre scared and I get it. Iâm just glad your grandpa isnât so terrified and youâve actually got a decent back up.â

âOkay, Okay, no I havenât either,â Reptil snorts. âBut thatâs probably because Iâve always been switching from homeschool and regular school,â he admitted.
Reptil paused. âI liked it, but my parentsâ only child, I started liking the circus⊠and doing things with my parents less and less because my parents were still smothering me and wouldnât let me do anything by myselfâŠâ he admitted. âWhich makes sense, I was their only childâŠâ
Ava listened patiently as he spoke, keeping in mind the news heâd delivered earlier. It must have been a hard pill to swallow, knowing heâd grown to dislike their company when they were gone now.... The thought made her grimace slightly, but she pushed it away and offered a small smile.
âI can kind of get that, a little bit at least. Iâm the youngest of four, but there was a big gap between me and the rest of my siblings. Fillipo passed when I was little, Hector and Awilda already had lives of their own, so my parents were as all over me as they could be when they werenât working.â

âOkay, you asked for this.â And with that, she winds up and pitches a hell of a fastball at him.

ââŠEating a hot dog? You got a problem?â
The costume clad woman pounced then, trapping the man five or so feet behind the young woman under her before delivering a swift blow to his skull. Black mask, standard criminal grunt look to him, just what she was expecting. Looking up at the blonde she snorted, âMight want to relocate. Things are about to get messy here, more like him on the way.â

đŸ â â I thought that was your scent⊠â taking off his mask he gave her a soft smile. â Iâve been well, nothing was really happening tonight so I couldâve stayed in and just watched some Netflix⊠What about yourself White Tiger? â
Ava shrugged, glancing between the prince and the city below them, âPatrol. School in a few hours. More patrol or a mission if something comes up in the evening. Same as usual.â Running herself into the ground was second nature to her by now.Â

The robotâs lips stretched at the corners, a sort of âoopsâ expression. Need to stop talking to yourself, Spoonsie.
Nevertheless, she brightened when the costumed woman approached her and stood a little straighter.
âY'know, places what got superheroes!â she replied, gesturing to Avaâs general everything. Then her brows dropped into a thoughtful frown and she tilted her head. âOr villianâŠ?â
Hey, she wasnât judging!
âBoth, but Iâm on the heroesâ side,â she answered with a cross of her arms and a look at the obviously non-human woman. Was she one of Starkâs bots gone rouge? âI suppose some cities are less attractive to the costumed sorts than others, but itâs not that surprising. Everyone knows New York is crawling with super powered people.... where are you from?â
Ava youâre just a nerd
âCoolest nerd youâll ever meet.â

Humberto grinned even more. Of course, he didnât meantion that he liked Avaâs laugh, because that would have probably made her stop laughing. âDamn it,â he muttered as he sat down on the bus next to her. âWhy canât I pick my nicknames?â He asked.
Ava rolled her eyes, a hint of a smile lingering on her lips. âBecause thatâs just not how nicknames work!â Not the most logical defense, but it was true! She crossed her arm, leaning against the window slightly as she looked over at him, âI think it suits you perfectly.âÂ

That actually made Ava laugh hard enough to warrant a hand pressed over her mouth to stifle the sound. âOh my God! Yeah, lets not have that happen. Not a worthy way to go.â Once they were out of the school, she nodded towards the way off campus, âCâmon, lizard supreme.âÂ
Humberto grinned at making Ava laugh. That was rare, and was something he never heard before. âYeah, itâs be rather embarrassing, I can see the headlines now: Dino boy dies because he turned to a fucking shark.â It was Humbertoâs turn to snort. âLizard supreme? Is that my new nickname?â He asked as he lead the way to a bus stop.
The headline joke got another small chuckle from the young heroine. This was better than trying to bully him into sparring more, or having him stew in his own negative thoughts. Sheâd take joking around, definitely. âMhmmmm~ Thatâs your new nickname. Just gonna have to live with it.â
