Last weekend I went to Vuurtoreneiland which is a really cool dining event on an island. You go there on a really old boat with snacks and a drink, then you eat a 5 course dinner on the island with wine and coffee at the end, and go back in the boat again - with tea, cheese and a chocolate truffle. Truly cool experience.

Jean Tinguely at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. Weird, but someone had to do it I guess... If you’re a nervous person, you might be somewhat startled when one of the machines start moving suddenly. Well... I was.

I went to tsarian mall yesterday in St. Petersburg... not really though, I was at the Hermitage in Amsterdam which shows a Romanov exhibition. Because the Hermitage belongs to the Eremitage in St. Pertersburg and because it’s 100 years after the Russian Revolution in 1917. It’s quite interesting if you’re in the mood for Rasputin, Anastasia & Co. and really well done.

Ed van der Elsken’s Amsterdam series really touches me... go see highlights from his oevre right now at the Stedelijk Museum. Definitely worth it. I went last week and I think I’ll go again.

I am free this week and thought I should explore Haarlemmerdijk a bit more! I often bike there and also visited it partly but there's truly a lot to see in this quite long street. The farther you go away from the station, the better it gets! Unfortunately it has been really cold today. Like frozen-toes-when-wearing-flats-cold. Brrr. However, I've been to some lovely and pricey places! The bathroom stuff is in a place called Affaire d'eau (http://www.affairedeau.com) where you can basically buy anything you need to furnish your own Titanic-era bathroom. They have wonderful toilet paper holders for like 125 Euro. The wooden print letters were from Six & Sons which seems to be a café as well. They have enamel mugs and stuffed (??? real, dead) animals standing around. The former girls school was just nice to look at. What to check out as well: http://www.restored.nl and basically the whole street. You will find about three stores that sell old (German) illustrations from scientific plant books, on the science of cake serving (in, you guessed it, the bathroom store!) or crude explanations of how to remedy the flu, 19th century style in a bookstore. Oh yeah, I almost forgot to mention the bookstore. I don't know the name and it's not marked on Google maps. I think the owner basically only sells postcards, which were quite decent, and he has a sign at the door, forbidding phones! Yes, it is exactly what you would expect, with loud 70s (??) rock music playing inside etc. You can find second hand Dutch literature and some old French and German books as well. He has lithographies of anything and seems to be fond of a certain artist of whom he also sells pictures, showing the guy in his atelier. In the 70s, obvs. TL;DR Go to Haarlemmerdijk in the western direction and explore all the original stores there!
