Where they got their name from:
So we all know the Panic! at the disco name was a reference to a name taken song, but where did ‘The Young Veins’ come from? In a spin article from 2010 ryan explains that “At first, we wanted to call the band the Veins but there was already a band called that. So we just called it the Young Veins. We liked the ‘fresh blood’ connotation.”
But he also says that it’s a ‘spinal tap’ reference. Spinal tap is a reference to the fictional band from the mockumentary film ‘This is spinal tap’ in which follows the band on tour and is a satire on rock bands of the time and how they would act. (A hilarious movie btw go check it out!) The reference is from this scene where the band members mention they were part of as band called the ‘originals’ but had to change the name of the band to ‘the new originals’ because the name was taken. Is it intentional that he picked a movie that makes fun of bands, and their extravagant lifestyles? Or did he just think it was a funny way to get the band name you want without comprising. Who knows, but I definitely feel like there is a hint of irony/satire in there somewhere.
Other names that were debated include ‘The New Things’ and ‘Band Names’. (Real original…) And according to this MTV article ‘The Guts’ was also threw around, but it was too ‘Punk sounding’.
In this article from popmatters Jon walker explains that they came up with the name in two weeks just so they could release a song. He also mentions another discarded band name which is ‘The chills’ which was taken by an 80’s New Zealand band.
