It’s been a while || Amelia & Asher

The time spent after Amelia had disappeared was not something he wished to dwell on much. The first few weeks, he’d followed her wishes, knowing that Amelia needed time to heal, needed space for herself. He had refrained from searching for her, had not wished to be turned away, and it was only when she had not returned after a month that he considered the very real possibility that she would never return. It frightened him, on a deep and visceral level, and though he’d focused on his business, the fact remained that thoughts of Amelia kept him awake most nights and there was only so long that he could ignore how much he missed her. It was after Christmas that he had taken a long leave of absence, leaving his second-in-command in charge of the company until he returned. While he remained available via owl, he spent weeks, months, searching for Amelia, using every contact he’d ever had. He’d finally tracked her down to a city, but had no idea where precisely he could find the woman he loved with every fiber of his being. He was currently staying in a hotel and had gone to a convenience store in the morning to purchase some provisions for the day; he did rather well in the muggle world, though his hands twitched daily when he wasn’t holding a wand.
But at least he wasn’t constantly looking over his shoulder wondering if a sycophant with a mask would murder him in his sleep.
It happened slowly, too slowly in his opinion. He saw a flash of hair and though he was too distressed to hope, he could not help but follow it. It was only when Asher caught her profile that he realized it was the one he’d been searching for and when he said her name, it was hoarse, sounding completely undignified from the rest of him. She shook her head and it shocked him, spurring the man into action. His fingers touched her shoulder and when he finally saw the eyes that haunted him only in his dreams, the relief that filled his body was palpable.
“Amelia,” he murmured, shaken, shocked, thrilled at finally being able to see her once more.
“Asher? Are you real?” Her voice was barely above a whisper, his name sounding so familiar on her lips despite the fact that she hasn’t talked to him in months. She’d dreamt a lot of him. If it wasn’t her family she was dreaming about, it was Asher. Of course she knew that she loved him when she left him, her love for him wasn’t something she’d ever questioned and leaving him behind made her break even more. It was because she loved him so much she did what she did. She was broken beyond repair and it wasn’t fair on him to try and fix something that couldn’t be fixed. Asking him to stay would have been selfish.Â
Amelia hadn’t wanted him to find her, she had hoped that he’d given the search up, given her up, for the sake of being happy. Because he couldn’t be happy with her by his side. Not when she didn’t know what happy felt like anymore. The only thing that came close to it was a dream she had a few times, one where all her family was alive, sitting down to eat dinner with her and Asher. It was one of the most mundane dreams there could be, but it had brought her more happiness than anything else could’ve. When she woke up and realised it had been a dream she became even worse, not leaving her bed for a few days at a time. Those types of dreams were worse for her than a nightmare, because when she woke up she realised that she didn’t have any of them anymore. She was all alone.Â
She was frozen in place, unsure of what to do, her eyes welling up. Just hearing him say her name, looking into his eyes, overwhelmed her. Merlin, she looked like a mess. She didn’t care when she left the house like that, but she was embarrassed now, standing opposite Asher, she could only imagine what he must be thinking. What was he doing here? How did he find her? There were tons of questions she had but none of them left her mouth. “I’m sorry.” It wasn’t enough, but it was all she could get out at the moment.Â
