So we’re teaching girls to be anxious wrecks and boys to disregard the possibility of consequences for incautious behavior.  This explains a lot of things. Like… why women are anxious wrecks and men are frequently surprised when it turns out their actions do in fact have consequences. And why men don’t bother asking for help even when they really need it, and thus more frequently die from treatable health conditions (including depression), while women end up getting a broad stereotype of being hypochondriacs (and then having a hard time getting treatment for legitimate health concerns).

the rural white community was totally supportive of this

‘hard right jay,’ played by Jewish actor jay baruchel, heard about the change online. he is not a local – he is a neo-nazi from the city

he travels to this rural town and approaches the white locals, trying to recruit them into his ‘hard right’ ideology and get them angry about the name change. he assumes this will be easy

the white locals are hugely insulted by this, because a) they support the name change and b) they aren’t fucking nazis

jay calls in a bunch of nazi out-of-towners to stage this ‘protest.’ none of the hard-right people in his group are locals

after watching jay spend the whole episode acting like he’s so Respectable and Reasonable and Intellectual while spouting nazi rhetoric, watching Tanis beat his ass is extremely cathartic

These news programs think they’re slick all the time writing the number out long form rather than like 22.2 billion to make it seem like this impossible inconceivable number at first glance but then you realize we spend 22 billion every couple weeks on things that kill people.

Unreliable Narrator appreciation post for narrators who:

Are unreliable because they have a really specific worldview and won’t notice things that fall outside it

Are too busy to notice things

Are just straight up oblivious

Are unreliable because other characters don’t trust them and so nobody tells them the truth/lets them in on things

Have memory issues that mean they can’t recall things that happened earlier in the story so both they and the reader forget things

Spend so much time speculating about what’s really going on that they totally miss the mark and make things confusing in the meanwhile

Unreliable because they’re hardcore in denial about something highly relevant to the plot

Evolved Form: an unreliable narrator who always takes note of exactly what the reader needs to know in order to figure out what’s going on, but is way too stupid to figure it out themselves, and the reader spends the whole time groaning at the dramatic irony
