The ears of bat-eared foxes can grow up to 5.3 inches long. Bat-eared foxes use these ears to locate termites, dung beetles, and other insects, which make up most of their diet. Bat-eared foxes can hear larvae chewing their way out of an underground dung beetle ball. They can also detect the sound of harvesting termites chewing on short grasses.

Bat-eared foxes are hunted by several different mammal species, their large bushy tails work as a rudder when fleeing from predators in a zig-zag pattern. They are fast and good at dodging, but their best chance at escaping predation is by fleeing to their underground dens, which have several entrances and multiple chambers connected by tunnels. A bat-eared fox family may have several dens throughout their home range.

Most of their foraging is done alone at night. While looking for food, bat-eared foxes walk slowly and quietly with their noses to the ground and their ears cocked forward, listening for insects.

Pairs or groups are often found residing near one another, and individuals come together at dusk to play and groom each other. Bat-eared foxes mate for life, and sometimes two females will mate with one male and share a communal den. The father is very invested in the raising of young, and he spends a great deal of time caring for them. While the father is watching the cubs, the mother is free to forage for food.

In 1992, Susan Lingle of the University of Calgary published her study (Behavior, 1992; v 122) of the gaits of Mule Deer, White-tailed Deer, and their hybrids. Hybrids are sometimes found in areas of Calgary (and possibly other areas where the two species exist in close proximity) where large predators have been removed by humans.

White-tailed Deer, which live primarily in lowlands, GALLOP (a gait like that of a racehorse in full stride) to escape predators. On its habitat’s relatively flat substrate, a healthy deer can easily outrun a chasing predator.

Mule Deer, which live primarily on hilly terrain, STOT (hop with all four feet touching the ground at the same time) from slope to slope to escape a pursuing predator. No wolf or coyote can keep up with a healthy mule deer stotting mightily across the rough terrain of mountain hillsides, sometimes leaping ravines and small canyons in a single bound.

Hybrids: between the two species have an awkward, erratic, intermediate gait dubbed the “STOLLOP”. It isn’t very effective at getting the deer away from predators on either flat land or hillsides. Hybrids can survive only if there are no major predators, since they are relatively easy to catch.
