As far as we know there will be a Sequel to Frozen in a few years and I’ve already seen lots of gossip and ideas for the plot and what is going to happen there. However, I’m pretty much sure that most of these ideas and wishes won’t come true. Lots of these ideas might be good perhaps, but put them all together and we’ll overload the plot.
Let’s start with romance, because a lot of entrys I’ve seen are about the romance that might happen in Frozen 2. Will Olaf get a girlfriend? Is Jelsa or Helsa going be cannon? Do we get a new character as Elsa’s love interest? Is Elsa actually gay?
Siriously, I couldn’t care less if romance is going to happen in Frozen 2 or who is it going to be. For me romance would a “nice to have” thing for Frozen 2, though it doesn’t have to be. However, if there is going to be romance in the sequel, I want it to be done right. And I don’t mean “right” in the sense of that a certain ship is going to be canon, I mean “right” in the sense of “Well, I love it to watch them fall in love with each other”. And I don’t mean something cheap like “We’ve just met, we both look hot, LET’S FALL IN LOVE!” kind of thing (because siriously, that wouldn’t and shouldn’t be Elsa’s style). I would personally love it to see something like “romance a las Murphy’s law” in the Movie, but I’m also okay with something deep going or a combination between those two. I would even be okay, if the romance isn’t going to work out work out in the end and they won’t end up with each other. It might even be fun to watch it bursting into flames, if it is going to be really horrible.
To gay Elsa: I could care less about her sexuality. If she is straight. Alright. If she is going to be a lesbain or bi, it’s fine with me. If the movie makes too much of deal with it (which shouldn’t be made a deal of in the first pleace idealistically), then I’m not that okay with it.
However, romance isn’t the only thing that should make up the plot (and it shouldn’t be the main part of it). We also need a conflict or we could all as well continue writing our own little fluffs for Frozen. What’s going on in Arendelle? What’s the problem? Are there some struggles our favorite characters have to master? Are there other personal problems? Will there be a huge argument between two characters we love, that makes everything around them go downhill?
I’ve very often seen the “A mysterious and sinster Figure plots something against Elsa” or the “Hans plans revenge”-kind of idea for the sequel. I even encountered something like “A stranger brings trouble into town”-thing. If you ask me about these ideas... Well... nah... that’s more like the vanilla idea for a lot of Sequels. It doesn’t feel that exciting to me, when there isn’t any other twist to that plot (the “someone like Elsa”-twist doesn’t count and could easily be turned into a boring one).
But then there are ideas like “a fire Queen/King as antagonist/friend” (which I’m a huge fan of) or things that are inspired by the original tale of the Snowqueen: a band of robbers that befriends Elsa and Anna somehow, one of them being kidnapped, the garden of eternal Summer and a plant controlling witch there (okay, that’s my idea) that might or might not be a villan and else.
And then there is also the idea of giving Anna powers as well (a common one used in Fanfictions). Well, this would be tricky. I mean the power she gets should fit to her personality and some argue that since Anna is a polar opposite of Elsa she should fire powers. My problem with that: fire powers are often asociated with problems through anger/rage and I simply don’t see Anna as someone who has those problems. I simply don’t. I think plants would suit her more (so fresh and full energy and spring and still growing, etc. you get the point). I mean what follows winter is spring and we would have somehow the witch from the garden. As Anna’s problem for controlling it I could see doubt. I mean like her doubting of what she is able to do and not having faith in herself.
I would love it to have (self)doubt and overcoming it as the overall theme in Frozen 2.
Erm, and there are also ideas of developing Kristanna like proposal, marriage and them getting a baby. As long as we don’t go 20 years fastforward just to see their children having problems with adulthood (you only fastforward so much when you believe that the franchise is going to end very soon). Marriage and else? Sure, just don’t annoy us with it the whole movie and keep it somewhat short. Babies? Well, this one can do a bit longer and might even help building the overall-theme (like doubt: what if I’m going to be a horrible mother?). A few everyday problems that come with pregancy? I’m okay with it as long as it won’t be overused.
I’ve also seen “redemption Hans” and “Fire-power Hans”. They both can be marvellously combined. Fire-Hans makes as much sense as you take the glove-argument serious and it would help developing his character if he had also problems with his powers. This could be used as an element for a redemption Hans, though he shouldn’t redeemed because of his powers of course. His redemption would also give us an deeper insight of him and of his motives for, well, being a douchee in the first Movie. And I don’t believe pure villains and/or absolute black and white, so this should say a lot.
Have I left any idea out? Is there something else you want to discuss with me about Frozen 2? Go ahead and ask.
