when in discussion about the hunger games/tbosas, i have had a couple of my friends ask me, “why, if coriolanus knows the horrors of poverty and the effects of war, does he still condemn the districts to the same fate?”

the answer is quite simple. for coriolanus, its not a matter of “poverty shouldn’t happen to a person”. rather, its “poverty shouldn’t happen to me.”

coryo, growing up in an environment where his fathers success was deified, saw the glorification of stepping on others to secure one’s own success. coryo believes that some people are deserving of the horrors of poverty and the effects of war, as they were not born to success nor can they find their way to it. it’s why he harbours such a hatred for sejanus. sejanus is the polar opposite to him; someone who (in coryo’s worldview) owed the poverty but living in luxury - whereas coryo is owed luxury but living in the poverty.

in coryo’s mindset, there is a power ‘balance’ between the rich and the poor. and the way to keep that balance is to never lift up those who are in poverty. to him, instead of it being “right” that a person should be liberated and free, it’s “right” that everyone stays in the place that is predetermined for them.

question for the masses: do we rate the intolerability of pain based on the actual level of pain we feel or on its possible deadliness or even its percieved extremity. yes, i am asking this because deadpool can cut off his own hand with basically no complaint and either that’s because he knows it won’t kill him, or because its not that extreme to him because of the torture in his past, or its just a comedy action movie. who knows x

the other day i needed to open this tupperware pot that is always super painful to open, and my mum was next to me, i was having a bad day with my physical help, and she had done everything for me. i was going to ask her to open it for me because it hurt to do, but i felt suddenly nauseous and horrible at even the thought of making her hurt when i could experience it myself. my mother is an angel, and this story is stupid, but this “poem” was borne out of it. i would take any pain, small like that tupperware, or intense suffering, for her.

i cannot believe that katniss everdeen became the “anti-bella” figure when the hunger games first came out. i cannot believe that she was widely known as someone who was “strong” and “independent” and “didn’t care about boys or romance” and was distinctly anything that’s considered “not feminine” (because that’s bad!) when in the books, she’s the most Teenage Girl teenage girl that i’ve ever run into in any medium. she’s kind, and compassionate, and nurturing, and moody, and angry, and occasionally verbally nasty, and she loves music, and art, and having picnics with the boy she likes. there’s nothing about her that’s stoic and unfeeling. for as subversive as the hunger games was in regards to gender roles, she never feels like someone who resents her own womanhood. she never sees being a woman as a weakness. as a defective state of being. suzanne collins never uses her to knock down traits that we commonly see as “feminine” the way so many other authors do with their “strong” female protagonists. she’s a complex, fully fleshed out teenage girl who thinks and acts like a teenage girl, and you cannot get away from that. and there is some part of me that is resentful that the movie franchise came off on the heels of twilight because i think katniss’s characterization would be so different if the movies came out today. i don’t think the directors would’ve gone so far out of their way to make her a stereotypical stoic badass instead of what she actually is: a kind, moody teenage girl.

I'm thinking about how Katniss describes the rock that Thresh uses to kill Clove. She compares its size to "a small loaf of bread." This is what I mean when I say I could talk about the bread symbolism for hours. It's actually insane that Thresh is saving her life here, but in Katniss' mind, it echoes Peeta. The first person who saved her. Peeta will always be the epitome of safety to her. God, it's just so—
