What I learned in drum corps:
1. Appreciate the sunset. Look up at the sky. Love clouds. You can and will fall in love a thousand times over with things you have seen a thousand times before.
2. Nothing is as serious as you think it is. Take everything you do seriously, but remember, it’s just band.
3. Everybody poops, everybody pees, everybody sweats, everybody cries.
4. Negative energy is wasted energy. It takes just as much power to pout and whine as it does to put on a smile and fake it til you make it.
5. Your best days can quickly turn into your worst. At the same time, your worst days can easily turn at the drop of a hat.
6. Your best performance may not happen in Lucas Oil, or Michigan City, or anywhere within a judge’s line of sight. More likely than not, you will leave it all in a rural Pennsylvania town on your 2nd all-day rehearsal or a practice field full of holes in Ohio or the literal side of a highway in Indiana. Your only audience for your best run might be your staff and the population of the Connecticut farm town where you’ve been rehearsing for weeks. And that’s totally ok. You were there, and you were great, and that’s all that matters.
7. This activity will tear you apart in every way possible. Your body will ache, break, bleed, bruise like never before, and you will laugh and smile and muddle through, because that is what we do in this activity. You will be sun dried and brain fried and there will be days where you will believe that you cannot possibly physically, mentally or emotionally survive. But you’ll make it through.
8. It is ok and in fact encouraged to be comfortable with who you are and how your body is. Confidence is beautiful, and it is essential to your growth and success. Fall in love with yourself.
9. You will wish away sets, blocks, whole days. And the minute it’s over, you’ll wish them all back.
10. You have the power to turn a day around, be it yours or someone else’s. You are so very powerful, you have no idea.
12. Emotions are valid. Everything you feel, it’s all part of the experience. It is ok to feel things.
13. You must look out for one another. The success and happiness of the group is dependent on the success and happiness of the individual. Therefore, take care of each other in every way possible.
14. Once upon a time you were in the stands, watching a band or corps and thinking to yourself, “ wow, I want to be just like them!” Well, now you are on the field, and somebody else has taken your seat in the stands. Someone out there wants to be just like you. You, right now, are someone’s hero.
15. When it’s over, only 100+ people will truly understand what you have done, where you have been, what you have seen and why you are the way you are. The real world will not get it, and they will not care. They will not see the humor in your inside jokes. They will scoff at your unending optimism, your determination, your strength. All of the things that you worked so hard to earn. Do not let the real world bring you down. Drum corps will change you, but only for the better, I promise.
Genesis DBC 2016 #hellhathnofury
Genesis is doing some great things this year, I can't wait to see what the rest of the season is going to bring!
guys, drum corps is so bittersweet.
You can’t say you love every second of it, because you don’t. Some days, you feel like a tick. You hate yourself for dropping a fucking backhand or cracking a note or whatever. You get pissed at your brothers and sisters for doing god knows what (bc I mean you’re literally with them 24/7). There are days you want to go home and there are days you want to quit and there are days when you think about how if you hit that hole in the field just right you could just bow out for a few days.
Your friends leave. They age out, or they choose another corps or they get cut or whatever. It blows. This person you’ve been through everything with abandons you, it feels like, and you wonder why.
Your staff makes you feel like shit. You know deep down they love you and want the best for you, but sometimes, you think they’re trying to get rid of you. You take things personally you shouldn’t, or you let things get to your head, and you feel the disgust in your soul.
You spent $3000+ to make yourself feel like a sack of shit…
But then there are the good times.
There are the times you fucking nail a show
when the crowd is deafening before you even end the final hit
when you head to your first ensemble of the season and become a part of something bigger than yourself
when you see the kids you inspire
when you see the alumni whose legacy you carried on
when you’re spending time off the field with the 38 best people in the world just being ridiculous
Your memories never fade, until they do
and your friends become a part of you, until they fade away
and your laughs are heightened by your cries
but you know that no matter how shitty you felt sometimes, hitting that field in Lucas Oil with the crowd going wild, fighting dragons with the only 149 people who will understand-
everything is worth it.
A little sequence I came up with. Still needs cleaning but I’m in love with backhands 😍
awe throwback!
Colorguard saved me and I'm extremely grateful for that
I have achieved one of the biggest and hardest dreams of my life by being recently being contracted to march with Carolina Crown for the 2016 season. With move-ins being less than a month away I need as much financial help as I can get with finishing paying off the last of my tuition.
Please share this! My friend recently got a contract to march Carolina Crown this summer for his age out! He is so so talented and deserves this! Even if you can’t donate, just reblog please :) help a fellow guardie out!
If I were to do watercolor paintings for commission, would anyone be interested? I would probably charge $10 for the larger (12x12) ones and $5 for the smaller (6x8). I can do drum corps stuff, music related, quotes, etc. Let me know if anyone would be interested! I would be using the money to pay off my 2016 tour fees!
