moving on the internet, nostalgia for URLs
thisismyeducation was originally a place to keep track of art school times but after my annual years out or semesters elsewhere, my institutional education has finally come to an end. Still learning but these days I’m recording things over on hannahfordfilm. I’ll mostly use thisismyeducation for side projects, especially over here on Vimeo. If I follow you I’ll still appear as thisismyeducation.

Corner shop
In 1828 the Rhode Island capital of Providence gave America its first shopping mall in the form of the Arcade, which like a lot of historical buildings has recently been renovated into “micro lofts” but its Greek revival columns don’t feature in these pages, neither does the 1999 Providence Place mall with its carpeted floor. During my time in Providence, I became more interested in the places where it wasn’t so easy to walk around, where the “flâneur” wasn’t a design consideration. The lack of the corner shop, that in Britain is rapidly being replaced by the homogeneity of a Tesco Express or Sainsbury’s Local, is one I couldn’t fathom. In a city that feels more like a town with a few skyscrapers; one of which is nicknamed the “Superman” building due to its resemblance to the 1950s comic depictions of Daily Planet tower, instead seems to highlight that the city only has the essentials to evoke a fictional urban setting. Those that appear in the pages of comic books probably don’t need to buy bread and if they did they probably wouldn’t rely on public transport to reach the superstores that all line freeways. Without a car and with a bus service that might only appear every second hour, it’s not difficult to find yourself stranded in a Stop & Shop car park when all you sought was food that wasn’t out of a box.

Super chuffed to have found my way into this year’s Bloomberg New Contemporaries show. Looking forward to September.
