Blind Date: Dan Howell
warnings: language, feels
I tapped my fingers nervously on the bar and swept my eyes across the room for probably the tenth time in just the last minute. My blind date was now 26 minutes late. I anxiously took another sip of my drink and brushed my fingers across the glass, wet with condensation.
“Y/N?” I heard a voice say from behind me.
My stomach dropped and I turned around to meet two warm, brown eyes. I looked up at him, gazing across his features. He was quite attractive, and I was surprised my friend set me up with a guy that’s my type.
“I have the perfect guy for you,” my friend told me the minute I opened the door when she came over for dinner last week.
I rolled my eyes, letting her walk past me into my kitchen. “You said that last time,” I said.
“No seriously, this guy is perfect for you,” she said nodding her head, “he’s intelligent, funny, and he has the coolest job. His name is Dan.”
I furrowed my brows curiously, “What does he do?”
She smirked at me, “Spoilers.”
“Okay, River Song. Seriously, what’s his job?” I asked her, highly interested now.
She never did tell me…
“Sorry I kept you waiting,” my date said, pulling me out of my thoughts. He rushed the apology in a mixture of awkwardness and nervousness. At least I know I’m not the only one on edge about this.
“It’s really fine, I was just having a drink,” I smiled politely, trying to ease his tension.
He visibly relaxed. “Let’s get a table,” Dan said, looking at me through the corner of his eye. We exited the bar side of the restaurant and walked up to the hostess.
“Howell, for two,” he said, and I smiled at the sound of his voice. It is soft and kind, something I wouldn’t mind getting used to.
I followed behind the hostess towards our table. As we walked, I looked around behind me to peek at him again, and I caught his eyes looking down and then quickly meeting mine. Was he checking me out? I blushed and swiftly turned my eyes back to the swishing ponytail of the hostess. I smiled to myself, not minding his wandering eye. In fact, what I was really just hoping he liked what he saw.
We arrived to a small booth along the wall of the restaurant, and I took my seat. Dan sat down as well, as the hostess handed us menus. We were silent for a moment.
“Um, sorry, do you mind if I run to the restroom real quick?” he said, looking up at me. I smiled and nodded, and he left our table. As soon as he was out of sight, I quickly pulled out my phone.
I had mentally taken note of his last name when he gave it to the hostess. With the newfound information, I was able to do a little internet stalking.
But when I got the results, I suddenly wish I hadn’t.
Thousands of hits came up for the guy. He had a Wikipedia! Apparently, he was a huge YouTube channel with loads of subscribers. I mean, he even had a fucking book! I was on a date with a celebrity.
I felt my stomach turn in nervousness. What are we going to talk about? My life is so plain and boring! I panicked, and decided that I can’t be on this date. He’ll be disappointed, but he will surely get over it. I’m sure he can have anyone he wants.
I began to quickly gather my things, and shrugged my coat over my shoulders. Just as I was getting out of my chair, I was met with big, brown, confused eyes.
“Are you going? Is everything alright?” he asked, his brows furrowed together. He didn’t attempt to hide his feelings, clear disappointment and confusion, possibly a little hurt, written across his face. His eyes we big and begging me to stay.
“I-I..um,” I stuttered, trying to think of something to say. But I met his eyes once more, and something about them triggered a waterfall of words out of my mouth.
“Well my friend didn’t really tell me that much about you so when you left for the bathroom I looked you up on the internet not in a creepy way or anything I was just curious and I found out that you’re, you know, you and, well, I’m me and I just got really nervous and-“
“Okay, okay slow down,” he said, sitting across from me. I sighed and put my face in my hands.
“You must think I’m insane,” I said. He didn’t respond immediately and so I met his eye again.
He smiled. “Is it a problem, what I do?”
I shook my head, “No! Not at all, it’s really cool. I just, I don’t know, I’m so boring compared to you.” I looked down to my hands. Why am I like this? God, he probably wants nothing to do with me.
“Don’t you think I should be the judge of that?” he said, chuckling. I laughed with him, mostly out of nervousness.
“Trust me, I by no means live a crazy, exciting life. All I do really is sit around on my couch with my laptop. Most days, I don’t even leave my house. If anything, you’ll probably think I’m boring.”
I smiled shyly. He’s probably telling the truth, I have nothing to worry about. Now that my anxiety has subsided, I began to realize how embarrassing I am.
I groaned, “God, I am literally a crazy person.”
Dan laughed and leaned towards me, looking me straight in the eye.
“I’m going to let you in on a little secret, we all are,” and he dropped his left eye into a wink.
