TANK + IONO

This treat is from late this summer, when we got to know the likes of Gelisa of IONO Fashions. She's a quirky little burst of godknowswhat held together by an air of grounded simplicity. Her baby, IONO Fashions is a design label that literally turns one man's trash into another's treasure. She takes clothing from Sal's Army, Goodwill, hand-me-downs, random trinkets and doo-dads and turns them into something seriously awesome. No one piece is exactly the same, no one piece can ever be remade and every piece is made with the wearer in mind. She is a travelling artist, now way down under (Australia), distributing her talents and building her brand, IONO. 

Some of these will be used for her Australian PR campaign, we just want you to know what she's all about: Loving and believing in the life you lead. Joined by rapper OHBO! Niyre, then artist Francis Virella and later BK-based dancer, Kimberly, we do just that. We talk to an adorable girl named Smiley about following her dreams, learn about a man's pure love for his best friend, Monster; and we talk to Ms. Rosie about why she loves being a Brooklyn clothes vendor-- all while prancing around BK like impish fools. Wholesome fun, ratchetness and everything in between, a good day for all.

HOLY SHIT, BATMAN!  Chaz Van Queen's video for his single, Everybody Hi!, has been released! Shot in front of Keith Harring's 'Crack is Whack' wall in Harlem this past summer, Van Queen takes you cruising through places he grew up, chilling with homies, and to a BBQ with the Hood Chef, who has grilled with the likes of Wiz Khalifa, Fabolous, and Chuck English of the Cool Kids. 

It's fun, fresh and a great showcase of his talents and personality, as well as the chops of his production team.

You know, we here at TANK don't like boasting birthdays (because everyday should be lived like it's your birthday), but tomorrow night is our NYC launch party. We're celebrating the birth of DuxLux's founder, Francis Virella, and the series of TANK residencies set up in Brooklyn and LES.

Event info reads:

"Like listening to things? Like looking at things and talking about things and laughing at things? Yeah-- us too. But something in the air always stops us from doing so. Maybe it's the pretentious gallery scene or hipster-ridden bars or maybe you're just a little uncomfortable around strangers. That's cool, we've all been there. 

TANK and DuxLux bring you an event that kinda has everything you want in a Saturday night. We're celebrating the opening of Apostrophe, a Brooklyn gallery and music venue, the launch of TANK, an artist collective and the birthday of DuxLux's founder, Francis Virella. 

How are we gonna do this?  By making it an all-evening affair. Starting at 9 o'clock, the cash bar will open, and first floor of Apostrophe will feature work by artist Sei Smith. "T-Shirts and Sweaters is a show of minimalist-esque painting without the pristine austerity or conceptual idealism that often forgoes any kind of visceral response. The skin like quality of the stretched t-shirts and sweaters allows for a visually tactile experience as well as a more playful one. Animal Flag made a music video. It's an endearing piece of DIY pie apparently shot in one take. The song is off of his EP, Everything Will Be Okay, and the video is a stone-faced romp throughout a Chicago mansion/bachelor pad. Complete with a tub-dweller, couch-surfers and a guest room harpist.

Though a much smaller city than New York, Boston has its own bin of distinctive homeless people. They troll, accost, give you flowers and rattle off torrents of one-armed push-ups. To Boston residents, Louie is the tricycle legend. He unapologetically zips past pedestrians as they aimlessly move through their banal lives. You've seen him in Copley Square, Downtown Crossing and cruising down Mass Ave chanting and cooing his way from place to place.

This 8 minute mini-documentary answers ever-elusive questions concerning his story: why he rides, what he's yelling, what he does with his time-- everything. It's an extremely enlightening piece for any true Boston native and allows you to see the friendliest eyes behind one of Boston's meanest of mugs.

Jazz trumpetter and composer, Myles Potters has just released an EP. It's a primly packaged parcel of experimental-jazz grooves, ripping horns, some real Wurlitzer chops and a rhythm section so crisp it'll make you re-evaluate any definition of 'the pocket'.

Apertures attempts to fuse elements of Jazz, Hip-Hop, and some Experimental influences into a coherent, personal narrative. The pieces were written in direct response to Potters' musical and personal experiences over the past four years, and is his reaction, and thanks, to lifes' effect on Myles as a trumpet player, a musician, and as a human being on the whole.

Sound design wizard, Murals will always have a place in the heart of TANK. Why? Because he's so much more of a man than you'll ever be. Well, that may not be true exactly, but he's an adventurous, innovative and refreshing producer-- and that's more than we can say for a lot of others.

Murals is the DJ and production alias of Nick Garcia, a composer and guitarist from Washington D.C. His work as Murals varies between house, idm, ambient, techno, and hip hop. He combines creative sampling techniques, self-recorded field samples, guitar, and a combination of hardware and software synthesis to create his diverse electronic compositions. TANK collaborator and track fiend, Spaceghost is a beatmaker from Oakland, CA who fulfills the sensation in his name. Creating hauntingly ambient soundspaces and tied together with smooth bass and heavy kicks, he uses lush synths and organic sounds that penetrate past the flesh and form an aura around that part of ourselves some say don't exist.

TANK favorite, designer and multimedia wunderkind, Vanilla Medallions expands her backyard vegetable garden and clothing empire, by planting sneaker-shaped seeds in Japanese retail. Her signature sneaker cushions have been picked up for a collaboration with super label, MYNORITY CLASSICS, a design label with a team of believers run by Japanese Hip-Hop DJ, DJ SARASA and internationally recognized B Girl, A$AMI ONE.

These  black leather-paneled, electric blue high-tops are brought together by a kente cloth textile that is sure to bring the best of swag to even the wackest of couches.

igbee does what igbee does, and we're not quite sure how to explain it. We're not quite sure how to pronounce the album name and we're also not sure of what worlds he drops us in once you hit the play button.

But that's cool-- we'll get home safe. What we do know is that his time capsule of an EP sends us to an embryonic pod of child-like bliss, in the single, Stereo Bliss, then slashes it open with industrial space-trap track, B SLIQ. Expect to have your ears sliced in ways you'd never expected.

If there's one word we could use to describe Mr. Detwiler, it'd be "zesty". Pumped full of smouldering angst, this photomaster does work that bites back. His work is well-seasoned, tasteful and evocative. It tells stories without even meaning to and allows your imagination to run wild.

Conor Detwiler (b. 1989) grew up in and around Boston, MA and Santiago, Chile.  His photographs are primarily an outgrowth of an interest in cinema and fashion, travel in the third world, and struggles with the mental health system.  Since realizing a misdiagnosis of bipolar disorder and coming off medication in 2009, Conor has been exploring holistic therapies and perspectives much more commonplace in other parts of the world, such as yoga, herbalism, energy healing and various forms of monasticism.  His photographs express his quest to explore a deeper relationship with the Self.

This man is more than you bargained for-- He's got the potential to create some really dynamic and far-out things while staying true to his simplistic style,
