Volvo enters the race for self-driving cars.

Volvo is introducing new features to their cars to assist drivers, with the first features rolling out in the next few years as part of a larger plan to increase driver safety. “Our vision is that no one is killed or injured in a new Volvo by 2020,” says a spokesman.

It plans to launch autonomous vehicles in 2014, capable of driving up to 50km/h, which are expected to be most useful in heavy traffic. The technology is similar to Google’s efforts, using lasers, cameras, and sensors.

The key ingredient, according to Volvo, was wireless Internet in all vehicles. By giving each vehicle on the road a common connecting point, cars could create a road train of vehicles talking to one another and mimicking each other’s movements as if they were a team of horses.

“The car of the future will be just like the farmer’s horse,” Mr. Eugensson said. “The farmer can steer the horse and carriage but if he falls asleep the horse can still take him back home.

“And if the farmer tries to steer the carriage against a tree or off a cliff, the horse will refuse.”

So, the big news is self-driving cars are now allowed on California roads under new law. While it sounds like an awesome idea, it's not. This is the complete opposite of what we want as drivers and people that commute everyday.

Here's why

We buy cars because we love driving them and have a say on how fast and slow we go. Ownership and control over the vehicle is something that goes with most drivers because they wish to be independent and make last minute decisions on the fly.   

At the moment driverless cars do exist. They're called taxis. Nine out of ten times it is highly unlikely you'll interact with the driver in your cab and as a result you're in total control of the time you spend behind in the passenger seats.  

With the rise of car sharing and collaboratively using cars on the road, it is a much more valid way to change the way we drive. Shared cars gives us the opportunity to get in, get there and be done. This results in having less cars. If autonomous cars are brought into traffic, just think about how highways will be flooded with non-autonomous cars and them as well.   

The video above makes it all seem possible and something that could be easily done. Hey, they even pick up a burrito on the way back home! Sure sensors and tracking systems can go above and beyond, but cars won't be able to make decisions on the fly because they're programmed to certain extent. Plus, what about weather conditions? Have we forgot it rains and snows. These unique situations can definitely alter the experience while in a driver-less car.  

It won't be as easy for a car to slow down and let pedestrians cross the street. I'm all in for replacing bad habits that cause accidents and prevent drivers from making mistakes behind the wheel. I just think we all know and can agree cars don't have emotions and won't show any kind of reasoning for humans.
