alex hears someone at the door, & he pauses a video game, waits for his brother to answer. of course, jeff doesn’t even bother coming out of his room. whenever he’s home, all he does is sleep or stay locked in there for hours, some music gently playing inside. al doesn’t bother him, because he knows he doesn’t want to be bothered. which is fine. they each have their own problems.

( he hears his mother’s voice, ❝ al, can you get that ? ❞ )

a controller is tenderly placed on the sofa so he can see who it is & why they’re here, stretching a little as he moves across the house. the boy doesn’t bother looking through the peephole, instead deciding to unlock & open it in order to see who it is.

evan. that’s sort of surprising. he hadn’t called to let them know he was coming or anything; so maybe someone else invited him over. probably. ❝ … hey. are you, uh, looking for jeff ? ❞

just evan this time. & not because he has an OBLIGATION to be here. nobody had an obligation to do jack shit, really. but jeff had more of an obligation than evan did, right ? at some point, ADMIRATION might’ve been the right word to describe how evan felt about jeff being the one to raise his own little brother after what happened. something about the word was ill-fitting, though. not good enough to describe his exact feelings on the matter, but evan remembers thinking, i sure as shit couldn’t do that.

anger before guilt is usually how it went. he’s not angry at jeff, no, maybe concerned. a concern he isn’t sure how to EXPRESS except through bouts of frustration or a personal sense of obligation, being friends with the guy. a sense of obligation ( & frustration ) he’d never admit to. the same reason he’s at the front door, smiling at alex.

❛ hey, man. ❜ he waves a hand in dismissal, ❛ nah. came to see you, actually. with all the shit that’s goin’ on, y’know. jeff isn’t exactly handling it too well, either. so... --- have you guys even, like, spoken today ? ❜ rhetoric to prove his point. or, rhetoric to SOLIDIFY the sense of obligation that pushed him here in the first place.
