A friend of mine is trying to raise funds to transfer her horses to California. I took care of one of her rescued Gypsy mares while she was in foal at the vet, a mare that had had a foal every year of her almost two decades of life since she could start carrying. This friend took her in while she was still pregnant, and I was with her in the first hours of her final foal’s life. She gave birth to a healthy, lively and sassy little animal. This family is truly amazing, and if there is anyone in this world that deserves this kind of help, it is this family.

Three weeks ago my parents were refusing to even think about offering to pay for a colic surgery. They were going to let me put a “family member” to sleep.

Today my mom comes home with a brand new car? A car that is nearly double the cost of your average colic surgery. Include post-op care and it still would have come below the line. And her other car was in perfect condition, not even 10 years old?

Where’s the lie.

This week wanted to wring me dry.

Sunday we admitted Marley to ICU for dorsal displacement, by sunday night the vets were saying surgery or euthanasia. He’s not insured, so I headed to the clinic for what I thought were going to be my last moments with him.

I got there and gave the vets permission to do whatever was in their power to help him. They gave him heavy sedation and started releasing gas through catheters inserted into his large colon. He became a little more comfortable, and fought it like a champ.

I stayed with him all night, and all the next day. He’s home now, slowly easing back onto regular food. I think he fully understands how close he came, and he’s made it pretty clear to me how important my role in his story is.

The moose and I waiting for the vet. We're waiting to see if he's impacted, fingers crossed that he'll be okay. ( I let him lay down only because he doesn't flail about if he's not feeling good.) Meanwhile, behind us, a friend of mine was being surprised by her husband, who bought her an incredible warmblood colt for their anniversary. Husbands, pay attention.
