Born-and-bred Thai artist Thitibodee Rungteerawattananon hails from Bangkok and graduated from Silpakorn University with a degree in decorative art. His work focuses on conceptual practice in form of paintings, installations, and found object. Exploiting culture jamming, Thitibodee first forayed into an art sphere with a notorious project Thai Message, where he furtively displayed, at a public toilet, sundries that were postally delivered by curious senders on their own volition. His Thai Message, albeit rollercoasting through compliments and criticisms, has glided its way across several countries, including Thailand, the US, England, Indonesia, and Australia. Now Thai Message is permanent collection in Maiiam contemporary art museum toilet. In 2018, Thitibodee settled legal proceedings against a big-name air-conditioner company. Despite meager compensation, such success inspired his recent exhibition the AIR (Bangkok, 2019). Since 2020, he has created the online stores Shopee and Lazada as the hubs to which artists can deliver their artworks. His shows were also exhibited online at Gallery Ver’s in 2020 and Jim Thompson Art Center’s from 2021 to 2022. Recently, he has been awarded commissions from Singapore and Korea.

With Ghost, Thitibodee Rungteerawattananon upsets our expectations of the function, attire, and behaviour of the typical gallery sitter we may encounter within a museum setting. Bemoaning the anonymity and invisibility of these museum workers, the artist has chosen to draw attention to these lonely guardians of artworks’ safety. Dressed in a uniform akin to a military regalia, a performer serves as proxy for the artist, wandering the galleries like a ghostly apparition while teasing exhibitiongoers. Rather than blending in, Ghost stands out, begging to be seen and heard.
The moustache sported by the Ghost hints at the potential identity of the individual – a man who toured the colonies (starting with Singapore) in 1871, establishing close friendship ties between Singapore and Siam, and is credited with modernising his home Kingdom. Now, more than 150 years since his initial visit, he seems to have returned again to glean more insights for future developments.
