We received a surprising email today from Douglas Page.
Doug would not admit it but he is an acknowledged expert in the installation, jointing and terminating of EHV cables.
Yes, your are Doug.
The email read "a bunch of questions from recent posts working with Thorne & Derrick, have asked me to explain some misconceptions. I am in no way trying to instruct, these are just my opinions, and hopefully will answer some of the strange questions I have been receiving. Let me know what you think, or even if I should go down this road. The problem is, the same misconceptions have been causing cable failures for years".
We say, steam on down that road Juggernaut Doug – we’ll rocket propel your content via our LinkedIn Discussion Group and social networks. You are a thought-leader with vast experience and are attracting a definite fan-base.
We see that through the Google traffic coming into www.cablejoints.co.uk from your Posts.
Be as flattered by the attention as we are honoured to have the opportunity to be your online voice.
R.E.S.P.E.C.T to you.
Lets pass you all over to Doug to explain some of those misconceptions.

Gas Detectors Fixed & Portable | Contact T&D +44 191 410 4292 - UK & Export Sales. Technical Support. Best Prices. Ex Stock.
Gas detectors, both fixed and portable, provide life saving alerts and notice of the presence of potentially fatal gases in working areas. Typically, a fixed gas detector is used as a permanent gas monitoring solution installed in a specific location such as a process area of a control or a plant room.
The area is continuously monitored measuring the concentration of a selection of gases within the air. Fixed gas detectors are used for the detection of flammable gases, toxic gases and for monitoring oxygen depletion levels.
Fixed gas detection uses the latest technology to ensure the safety of plant and personnel at all times. In the event of a gas concentration reaching a preset high level, fixed gas detectors have alarms, lights and indicators that act as a warning signal to alert the user of the gas risk hazard in both safe and hazardous area locations.
Portable gas detectors are, as their name suggests, portable and easy to carry around. They can be attached to clothing or overalls for continuous gas monitoring when moving between zones and sites.
T&D have an obligation to investigate any cable joint or cable termination product failure, but over the years we have been asked more and more to get involved in general cable failure analysis for high voltage HV networks.
undergo un-biased investigations into any failure involving high voltage cable joints and cable terminations regardless of manufacturers or whether heat shrink or cold shrink type.
Below are 5 case studies covering Cable Fault Analysis linked to the cable jointing and terminating of high voltage power cables. Click on the links for more information on each study.
Filoform FiloSeal+HD Reenterable LV HV Power Cable Duct Seal System
New from Filoform is the FiloSeal+HD re-enterable duct sealing system which provides a strong support system using hexagonal tubes which build up like a honeycomb structure to prevent water ingress and gas migration through cable ducts - this includes sealing LV-HV 11kV-33kV power cable ducts and Triplex cables.
The FiloSeal+HD is suitable for any cable configuration (single or multiple) contained within one duct and also allows for easy re-entry of the duct seal to add or remove cables or pipes as required.
Winterisation - Electrical Heating Equipment For Cold Climate Operations | Contact T&D +44 191 410 4292 - UK & Export Sales. Technical Support. Best Prices. Ex Stock.
“It is estimated that the Arctic holds around 30% of the world’s undiscovered natural gas and 13% of its yet-to-find oil. This amounts to around 400 billion barrels of oil equivalent, 10 times the total oil and gas produced to date in the North Sea.”
Developing the Arctic could be essential to securing energy supplies for the future, but it will mean balancing economic, environmental and social challenges,” according to Shell.
The search for oil and gas by exploration companies is becoming ever bigger and no corner of our planet is out of reach (or is it?).
Exploration focuses on areas where extreme temperatures are the norm. The Arctic for example has many untapped resources but working in this type of climate poses new challenges to owners and operators with ambient temperatures as low as -60° Celsius.
Manufacturers of equipment for use in these areas have to find solutions which will operate effectively and reliably in such cold weather climates.
Winterisation measures are those which ensure an offshore vessel is prepared for operation in cold climates focusing on the adverse effects and the control of icing, freezing and wind chill. This article has been written as an informative piece about winterisation of offshore platforms, FPSO and FSUs but also focuses on managing onshore process plant through severe weather.

SF6 Gas Detection For HV GIS Switchgear - Crowcon F-Gas Detector
Gas Detection In High Voltage Substations, Switchgear & Cable Chambers.
The Rise, Risks & Safe Detection Of SF6 Gas.
50 years ago ABB pioneered GIS technology.
Gas insulated high voltage switchgear (GIS) is a compact metal encapsulated switchgear consisting of high voltage components, including circuit-breakers and disconnectors, which can be safely operated in confined spaces.
Sulphur hexaflouride (commonly referred to as "SF6") is an inorganic, colourless, odourless, non-flammable, heavy gas that has exceptional electrical insulation performance.
SF6 Rules OK!
Sulphur-hexafluoride (SF6) is an excellent gaseous dielectric for high voltage applications that does not react with materials commonly used in high voltage circuit breakers, substations and electrical equipment in the power industry. The combined electrical, physical, chemical and thermal properties offer many advantages when used in HV power switchgear :

T&D, a leading UK distributor for industrial and hazardous area gas detection equipment, present a Guest Article by Debra Hall, Sales & Marketing Director of Control Instruments Corporation.
Control Instruments Corporation’s mission is to engineer and manufacture high quality solutions to gas detection problems. From simple to complex cases, Control Instruments Corporation ensure safety is a top priority.
In today’s guest post, Debra explains the top 4 reasons to heat industrial and hazardous area process gases.
Keep it Heated!
Industrial processes operate at various temperatures, using a wide variety of different gases, solvents and background constituents (i.e. tars, resins, salts, plasticizers, water vapor, etc). It is important to keep these process gases heated. Would you like to know why? Read on to learn the top four reasons …

WHAT IS HEAT TRACING ?
Heat tracing is the application of a controlled amount of electric surface heating to pipework, tanks, valves or process equipment to either maintain its temperature (by replacing heat lost through insulation, also referred to as frost protection) or to affect an increase in its temperature.
The primary function of heat trace cable systems is the prevention of freezing within water pipes and subsequently bursting.
With temperatures dropping during the Winter months, freezing pipes are always a major concern for homeowners, businesses and industry alike. By maintaining the ambient temperature inside the pipe, frost cannot build up and pipes will not freeze. This means pipes will not burst due to ice expansion.
Did You Know….. A gallon of water, when frozen, will expand to a volume 9% greater than the original gallon.
In addition to frost protection, heat tracing cables provide heat maintenance and heat recovery.
Electrical Heating In Hazardous Areas Directives such as ATEX and IECEx provide internationally recognised standards for the installation and use of electrical equipment in hazardous areas. This article specifically focuses on electrical heating equipment and has been written for all …
