Bio-

Born in 1784 to the Lord and Lady Anette Thorne as their only child after they struggled to conceive a child. Tobias was restless even before he was born and that carried on when he came into the world, never sitting still and always needing to be doing something that wasn’t his heir duties.

Tobias had a wildness in him but a strict father with high expectations tried to tamper his unruly nature with lessons of all kinds to ensure his only heir would bring respect and value to the family, but it was not what Tobias wanted. Lady Anette was kinder to him, encouraging his curiosity but often played the mediator between father and son.

At age 16, Tobias only asked for one thing: to travel and see the world outside of society. While his father was against it, his mother saw it as chance to get it out of his system and convinced the Lord Thorne to let their son embark on a two-month trip. However, when the time was up, he did not return. (1800)

Cut off from his father’s money, and happily, Tobias worked harder than ever and earned the respect of his crew and continued to work on them for years to come. One night, during a storm, he spotted a shipwreck with some survivors and helped the rest of the crew rescue them (1809). He develops a fast and intimate friendship with one of the men, quickly falling for him but their status remains platonic. There are rumours amongst the crew that the rescued people are pirates but Tobias pays no attention since he’s besotted with the man and barely leaves his side.  During this year, Tobias is conflicted about returning home after he hears that his mother is pregnant, but he decides against it. Eventually, he hears that she died in childbirth but that he has a new sister.

The next year, he begins a relationship with the man he helped rescue, and the two embark on travel wherever they can and do whatever they can for money. Tobias suspects the rumours of him are true but doesn’t question it. News reaches him that his father has remarried and adopted a new family. There are mixed feelings there but some relief thinking that he will have less pressure from the man. (1810)

In 1812, Tobias is found by his fathers’ men. He is arrested for a false charge and taken in secret back to England without having the chance to say goodbye or let anyone know what is happening. Its not until he’s on the boat, and chained, that he recognizes the people as his fathers’ men. Back in England, he is kept under lock and key and away from the rest of the family while his father re-educates him in the ways and expectations of society. During this time, his father and his new lady wife have a child. A baby girl and sister to him they name Dianna.

1813 and the season is starting; Tobias joins the rest of the Thorne family and staff in travelling to London for the start of the season but has a guard or spy with him at all times to ensure correct behaviour and that he doesn’t run away. Despite this, he acts out in the wild ways he can and often found acting like a rake to make society bearable. There’s mystery about the Thorne heir returning but he does not want to take part in society.

For one brief second, Edgar felt absurdly lucky. Not a sensible-type of lucky. Not blessed in any neat, proper way. Lucky in the way a man might feel upon finding a loaded pistol, a fast horse, and an open road all at once. Tobias had come back into his life like a bad idea wearing a smile, and Edgar had not realised until that moment how badly he had missed having someone who would run toward the trouble with him instead of dragging him away from it. "And we've come full circle; perhaps it would be best for you to stay away from my Mother, after all," Edgar laughed out loud.

Then Tobias promised to take the blame to his grave, and Edgar pointed at him sharply. "Absolutely not. If we're caught, we are both lying. Badly. At the same time. I want the magistrate so confused he begins questioning his own parentage." He turned as if to lead them straight for the door - then stopped.

Across the room, a woman with luscious curly red hair and dressed only in a green silk gown, was watching him over the rim of her glass. Not subtly. Not accidentally. She smiled when she noticed she had been caught, slow and bright and wicked enough that Edgar forgot the plan for half a second. Beside her, another woman, blonde-haired and just as stunning, leaned in to whisper something, both of them looking far too entertained by him. Edgar glanced at Tobias, then back at them, then let out a low laugh. "London is a dreadful place," he murmured. "Full of beautiful distractions."

“You know, I think that is the best thing. You and your family are too attractive as it is and I don’t want to ruin having you back in my life by flirting with your parents!” A joke but he knew that had been the case in the past with some acquaintances. “You’re the most fun and best of your family anyway, I’d much rather spend my time with you.” 

The sharp point had Tobias raising his hands in surrender but the beginnings of his laugh clearly over his face and given away how much he enjoyed it all by the matching big grin, wide across his face. “But if I take the full blame and you say how I made you do all this, it’ll help anger my father and I want to take that chance every time it comes up!” Not a lie, he really did want that and if it meant protecting his friend then all the more reason. 

“What distrac-” he followed Edgar’s line of sight to the women and gave a nod to them, flirty and encouraging that seemed to excite them and have them giving him and Edgar a particular look. “There are beautiful distractions everywhere. Sometimes it's best to try them together.”

Never before had she met someone so full of energy and joy and despite herself, Ajana couldn't help but let a smile spread upon her lips, chuckling, not minding the lack of propriety and the fact that he did not sign her dance and allowed him to lead her. " I appreciate your help, I am unfortunately a bit out of practice. " She laughed, though, following his steps. " Is this where you plan on spending your entire evening, then? On the dance floor? Have you given any other activities a try yet? " Not that she wanted this moment to end. So far, he might have been the best person she had danced with all evening, or at least the most alive one, looking like he was having fun and not just going through the motions.

Tobias always lightened Tim's mood. It was hard to remain morose when Tobias wanted to dance. His friend had an infectious smile. He could more easily forget his own misadventures.

"See, this is why I ought to just stick to having fun with you." Tim admitted as he followed Tobias's lead. He even found himself smiling and meaning it. "I never say anything dumb in front of you, and we always have fun."

It felt like he hadn’t seen Tim in so long and the second he lay eyes on him, a huge and bright smile creased Tobias’ face that lit up his eyes in excitement. Whenever he was around him, it felt like no time had passed at all and both of them had similar energies, he thought, and whatever they did together, it always went well.

“Fun, trouble, other things…well, I can’t blame you for that and I’m going to let it get to my ego but what was that you said about saying something dumb? I can’t see that from you! And even if you did, you can get away with it with a charming smile.”

eyes  widen  when  he  takes  her  hand.  oh,  dear.  he  most  certainly  wasn't  looking  at  where  he  was  grabbing.  more  surprise  than  much  anything  else  spurs  her  to  rise  alongside  him,  the  spiking  of  her  adrenaline  encouraging  the  serpentine  moves  and  her  hands  to  raise  to  clap.  when  this  motion  comes,  at  last,  she  makes  eye  contact  with  him,  still  rather  incredulous  in  expression.  “  is  this  easy?  it  feels  ghastly  and  fast  to  me  —  ”  cut  off  by  the  reel  of  the  music,  and  music  is  what  she  is  made  of,  faltering  in  the  following  move  to  attempt  to  lift  her  skirts  to  step  with  him.  “  good  heavens!  whose  name  for  this  dance  will  be  put  on  my  card,  sir?  you  dizzy  me.  ”   whether  or  not  that  was  a  good  or  a  bad  thing,  eden  reserves  opinion.  still,  there's  something  ridiculous  about  the  whole  thing.  and  she  can't  decide  whether  she  is  thrilled  by  this  or  not.

He watches her to make sure he hasn’t upset anyone by making them take part in the dance and even though he thinks that he sees her struggling, maybe there’s hope of encouraging someone else to be more free with their moves and make this something good and fun. “Don’t think about it!” Said quite fast and maybe a touch too excited and harsh. “Just move how you feel like you want to, how the music calls to you!” He did and it looked different to most peoples movements but he had a way about him that had it still looking good. “No name on the dance card! That’s far too structured! This is the opposite of it! Come on, try!”

Elliot is...slightly taken aback, by how fluid, and lively Tobias was. He would have thought for a Thorne he would be more, proper? Stuffy perhaps. It only adds to his charm. The way he also manages to keep his attention on Elliot, it....it has his blush deepening, especially when he's told to loosen up. Trying to take his advice, he feels his body relax, and ease into the music. Eyes roaming over the other's figure.

"Elliot Carlisle, by the way. A pleasure to make your acquaintance" Smiling at the other man, deciding to take his advice even further, in the spirit of having a better time as Tobias had put it. "Do you have a habit of randomly dragging men off to dance with you, or am I just very, very lucky tonight to be your decided partner? Because I dare say, your sudden appearance, is making my night far better already."

He moved like he did when he was away, when he was free and able to just go about himself and not be tied to a family with a long, documented, lineage and all that expectation. Even when society had their balls and dancing, they were so routine and stiff. Nothing like when he’d dance in the taverns with other sailors and people who were truly letting loose.

“Tobias,” he beams and gives a not-so-subtle raking look up the other man's body, his gaze being deliberate and making sure to end looking at him right in the eyes. Giving his surname was never something he liked to do. “It’s a habit I quite enjoy! Random men or not, nothing beats it but less dragging and more mutual wanting,” he grins. “Normally I don’t try my luck on the dancefloor and give a more direct proposition and we end up in my chambers,” if there was any hope of subtlety then it had been obliterated. “Or around the back of some tavern. Names not always shared.”

"truthfully?  both.  less  people  wander  by  with  them  closed,  and  the  music  softens."  ramón  tilts  his  head  then,  hearing  the  request,  debating  on  whether  he  should  indulge  the  other.  still,  what  would  be  the  harm?

ramón  withdraws  another  cigar  and  holds  it  out  to  the  other  man.  "i'll  trust  your  insight,  though  do  be  warned,  if  your  prediction  ends  incorrectly,  you  will  suffer  the  consequence  of  my  sewing  needle."

“And what could you want that’s best done in private?” he asks, leaning back and giving a deliberate and obvious look over every part of the man over, knowing it wasn’t meant that way but flirting by default as is his way. 

He takes the cigar and lights it, taking a good drag of it. “Is that a hidden meaning for something? Are you going to stab me?” laughing as he asks it as if it weren’t a dangerous prospect.

Eddie burst out laughing at the image of his mother murdering Tobias with her bare hands. "Oh, she absolutely would," he said through the laughter. "You're not in her best books, but I'd wager that you'd be able to charm her for perhaps five minutes and then say something catastrophic. I give you one dinner before she decides you're even more a threat to society than she already thinks, based off our schooldays." The mention of Frederic made him grin wider. "God help you, you met the youngest one first? Freddie? That means you've started at the least dangerous end of the family. Freddie's biggest weapon is his glare and his pout. If you can get past those two, you'll be fine."

As Tobias seemed to agree to steal something from Dominic, Edgar's expression brightened with immediate mischief. He leaned closer conspiratorially, like this was the first serious conversation they'd had all evening. "You cannot steal something practical from Dominic. That man thrives on practicality. We need to take something that will deeply inconvenience him emotionally." The opium and alcohol had clearly combined into a dangerous level of confidence now, because Edgar looked genuinely delighted by the possibilities.

"His signet ring would be excellent. But he might murder me if we do that. Or his stupid pocket watch - he checks the thing every ten minutes like Parliament itself will collapse if he loses track of time." Tobias' idea about the horse made Edgar laugh again, louder this time. "No, no, wait - imagine stealing one of the O'Connor bank ledgers and replacing it with a detailed sketchbook of horses instead. Dominic would have an aneurysm." He was already pacing slightly now, restless with excitement, running entirely on impulse and terrible ideas. "Actually, better." Edgar snapped his fingers suddenly. "Dominic has this brooch that our grandfather gave him; I know exactly where it is. It'd cause enough drama to be entertained for weeks."

“I don’t doubt it! I should really fear it, shouldn’t I?” Nothing on his face said there was fear. It said the opposite. “I think that was some record for me for how fast I got a parent to hate me! I don’t think I’ve met her or if I did I was too drunk or on something else to remember it. Oh,” he says, trying to put on his best serious face. “You do not want me charming your mother. It always ends up in a way you would not want for your parent!” His charm almost always ended up in someones bed and even though he was many things, he wouldn’t do that to someone that he liked. “Least dangerous? I had a real fear that his glare was going to kill me! He has a way with words, he’ll make a good writer.” 

Oh to steal something from one of the powerful families just for fun and to do it with his friend. He’d longed for times like this.  I’ll do it and if I’m caught, I’ll take your role in this to the grave!” The excitement was emanating off him, his eyes lit up with a crazed excitement eager to get out of the party and do their plan. 

“All are excellent options and we shouldn’t choose! They’re small so I could take all of them and we could do the sketchbook plan but that might take more work so that can be a later one unless you have that kind of thing lying around? Let’s go now!”

"Funny looking, maybe." Katherine mumbled, managing to make the spot on her dress less wet. But there was still a slight stain there, which she was very much unhappy with. She could see the rosiness in his cheeks, the easiness in his smile, and Katherine scowled. That could only mean one thing.

Her suspicions were correct when he voiced them almost immediately. "That is pathetic. One should not need to be intoxicated to have fun." She was not one to talk though. In fact, she was a little jealous he was already clearly quite happy. If they had been on better terms, she probably would have asked for a swig from his flask. Instead, she gasped dramatically and glared at him. "You snuck that thing in? It is practically the size of your giant head!" She crossed her arms over her chest, her classic bratty sister look. "I will tell Papa what you've done."

“My many, many, partners would disagree to that but keep trying and I’m sure you’ll come up with an insult that’ll land. I believe in you,” his voice is full of mocking and an over the top smile given to her. It would be easier if they got on but it didn’t seem that would be as fun. Seeing her scowl, it only widens his own grin. 

The urge to eyeroll is there but he fights it and opts to keep his irritatingly good mood on his face knowing that would get more of a reaction. His casual air about him could always get under people's skin when they were annoyed at him. “I don’t need it to have fun. It’s simply fun to do it and have a good time. Besides, the ale here is so weak you’d need to drink triple just to have an effect!” The drinks taken on his time away had increased his tolerance an unhealthy amount. “I did and I’ve, maybe, been around a few of the drink stations to share my little treat. Tell him, I’ll even raise a toast to the man!”

Genevieve’s eyes widened. A sailor? Well, now she was even more interested in what this man had to say. Everyone she’d met so far was noble or a civilian presenting themselves with an air of faux nobility. But he was honest about who he was, or used to be.

“I feel a bit idiote for even asking about a gem when you’ve clearly got more interesting stories to tell that have nothing to do with society or this ball,” she teased, stepping closer but not unbecomingly so. “What other superstitions did your seamen have about the gems you recall? I must be aware.”

She was always good at this: playing the perfect princess. But for once, it was easy to play that part and it hadn’t felt forced.

“You’ve likely read about one of them in Whistledown. I know people likely think I’m ungrateful because how I treated my status for years but yes,” he beams seeing her eyes wide and realizing they weren’t in horror, “from sixteen years old till two years ago I was a sailor. Look,” he rolls up his sleeve to show the faded rope on the inside of his wrist. “I’ve another but that would require taking off my shirt and I don’t think you’d like the scandal of that,” said as a tease.

“There were a few superstitions but I never paid too much attention to it if I’m honest. The one I remember most is never setting sail on a Friday because it meant bad luck or we used to whistle a lot. I never knew why and just thought it was something but, apparently, it was to encourage wind speed,” he shook his head at the daftness of it. “Do you have any?”

Frederic frowns as he looks at him. He nudged his Tobias back under the table. How improper. He's unable to process how carefree Tobias seems to be. He wished he could be like that more. It made him feel even more annoyed with the other man.

"Yes, I do," He scowls at him. "You have too," He tells him. He listens to him. His brows furrowed. " I guess that is the right thing to say," He thinks of Edgar and himself. There was some sorta of madness. It always felt like no matter how much they tried. They are never good enough for Dominic. "I'm going to assume you would go for what you want." He gives him a look. He leaned back in his seat, and he thought about it. It would be dull. His life felt dull, and he knew there was one thing that could add to or make his life better. "It depends on if the risk is worth it," and he wondered if it was...

“I have to, do I?” he scoffs even though he can’t help but feel some kind of entertainment at just how different they were and how he thought that he was getting under Frederic’s skin just by relaxing into the chair. One thing he could do well other than charm people is annoy them. It was a talent, really.

“I think if you think about it and even if you’re tempted to do it for just one second then you should. Your character but I think that could apply to life as well. Especially with someone who is as in control as I’m assuming your brother is. Risk is a hypothetical,” he says with a shrug, dismissing it with a hand waving the air away. “It’s just something that might happen. It just gets in your way from doing something you want to do.”

The music has shifted and so it seemed was the crowd dancing, Elliot was watching the movement, not quite familiar with this exact dance. His own training pointed more towards what the nobility had preferred his mother's effort to have him more readily available to impress the nobility at such a ball. That was when Elliot felt his hand grabbed and that someone had begun dancing with him, telling him that the dance was easy. The person in question? It happened to be Tobias Thorne, Heir to the Thorne Family, and truthfully to Elliot......one of the handsomest men in England. Feeling a blush pull to his cheeks as the other showed him the dance, Elliot tried to copy his movements. "Do you make a habit of this? Randomly inviting others to dance with you? I can't say that.....anyone has given me such an unexpected pleasure before."

Seeing that blush, well, Tobias wasn’t surprised but it never lost its pull on him when he saw it. It helped when the person with it was handsome, always made things much more fun. “I do!” he beams, moving completely free but making sure that his attention was showing off for his new dancing partner. “It’s better when it’s livelier and you don’t know who you’re dancing with!” 

He moves with ease, like he’s completely into the movement and letting it take him back to when he felt free and did dances like this on all the nights off he had, in some tavern or some street. Anywhere. It didn’t matter. “Loosen up! You’ll have a better time, I promise you!”

Edgar laughed brightly at that, the sound easy and genuine as he pointed his glass toward Tobias. "Companion in debauchery is significantly better. Much less responsibility attached." The room seemed louder now, warmer, the music sinking pleasantly into his bones along with the alcohol. Everywhere he looked someone was making a bad decision and enjoying it immensely. "That’s exactly it," he said, grinning at Tobias' comment about creativity. "The best trouble happens by accident. Or at least begins that way."

At the mention of the Murray house, Edgar's eyes lit immediately with dangerous interest. "Oh, now that is an excellent idea." He straightened from the pillar at once, already looking delighted by it. "Tobias, I think you may actually be a genius." Edgar quickly mixed another deathly potion of gin and opium, downed it in one go before setting the empty glass aside with far too much confidence for a man who'd mixed the terrible drugs into it himself. "What are we stealing?" he asked immediately. "Please say something absurdly impractical. I want this to become a family legend." His grin widened further as the possibilities started arranging themselves in his mind. "A painting? A statue? One of their horses? We could leave it somewhere humiliating afterwards. Imagine the headlines if a prized Murray horse turned up outside Parliament wearing ribbons."

Then another thought struck him and he laughed again. "Though honestly, if we're stealing things to fuel rivalries, perhaps we should rob the Barnetts too." He paused halfway through the idea, expression shifting as he reconsidered it. "No, actually, scratch that." A mischievous smile spread slowly across his face. "Dominic's the one truly keeping that ridiculous feud alive. We should steal something from him instead." Edgar looked genuinely thrilled by the idea now. "God, imagine my brother's face."

“If your family hears you say that then I think your mother might actually kill me with her bare hands!” He laughs it off and there’s no pretense to it, no stress or anything, just him simply having a good time with a friend. “Saying that, I’m not actually sure I’ve ever met your mother. I’ve met one of your brothers though. The young one. I only need to meet your eldest one and then I’ll have all your family cursing my name!”

That look. The spark in someone's eye that surely meant trouble and Tobias was sure as anything that it had been something many people had seen when he was about to get into some trouble. More likely the kind that led to his arrest in the past. “Well, I’m not someone who uses their brain that much except in these situations! I think something better than their paintings. You’ve heard how down they are in their finances, let’s not ruin something they may have to sell,” he chuckles. “How about something to do with their business? The rivalries between our families is about my mother but the competition with the banks is what keeps it going. Although their horses could be fun. We could put it in their bank and let it defecate all over the floor!” It was just getting the horse into the building that would prove difficult. 

“The Barnetts?” His blood ran cold, his face surprised and full of alarm. That would mean stealing from Piet. Relief flooded him when it changed to someone else. “From your brother? Well, it would complete the set of your family members who hate me. Let’s do it! Do you have anything in mind?”

At the ball, Riya considered her next steps while she watched the night unfold. The town would be buzzing tomorrow from the night's excitements, and she was at the very center of it all. There was so much to do, it brought a hazy cloud of excitement over her. Andfor once, she wasn't entirely alone experiencing something this grand.

Taking the glass from Tobias, she grinned and gave a twirl. "Thank you," she cooed, dipping into a playful curtsy. "I cannot tell if you are a moonstone or the moon itself," she teased. "...but I will say: you are a wonder, Mister Thorne."

“I think there could be something there about tides pulling me and maybe something about being pulled somewhere!” Still smiling, he beams even wider seeing her spin and gives a little applause that gets him some strange looks from a few people passing by. “I arrived a bit later than I planned, tell me what’s worth doing here and what is the most fun?” It was going to be a rough night and he thought it was a better idea to try and focus on the fun side of things. Better to who was subjective though. “I plan on overindulging in..well, everything.”

Dominic heard a lot about Tobias, all from his father. He’d lost count of how many times Lord Thorne had complained about his son during their recesses in the House of Lords. The man didn’t seem to have any drive, but hearing he knew Edgar, it all made sense. Both were cut from the same cloth, unencumbered by what their families wanted from them and happy to be selfish in their own dreams. “We’ve not, but I know your father,” he says, offering the man a polite nod. At least there seemed to be some small hope for Frederic, but Dominic knew better than to hold his breath. “Frederic is very proud of his writings,” Dominic tried to explain, neutrally of course, "but I apologise if he caused any offence.” 

Lord Thorne was a hard ally to get, but an influential one. Insulting his son with honesty wouldn’t do Dominic any good. Instead, he just smiled and took a step back, as if he were evaluating him. “I think you’re a man who seeks transformation,” he says, nodding to his outfit. Moonstone was just like the evaluators, but he’d heard so much about Tobias; transformation seemed appropriate. “But other than that, I’m afraid I’m not a good judge of character.” He lies. “You are free to give me yours, if you wish.” Dominic didn’t care. He’d heard enough about Tobias to value his opinion no more than his brothers' on their bad days. Dominic knew the relationship between Lord Thorne and his son was strenuous at best, even after his return from his unexpected absence.

“Oh, you do,” he says trying to hide the grimace but he can’t hide the way his enthusiasm for the conversation immediately tapers off but then it makes sense. They were both in the house of lords and even if they weren’t, they would obviously run in the same or similar circles. It was just how it was. “He didn’t cause any offence, if anything I was the one that did but I hoped to smooth it over with offering some insight from my travels to help with one of his characters.” 

Having only met Dominic’s brothers, he was expecting some kind of a bite or cutting comment but instead he got something else. Puzzling. Katherine walked into the Barnett home and looked around with a hint of disdain. Walking in, she already had a lot of judgement since the family was newly wealthy. She quickly made an excuse to Ceara about how she had to run off to find someone, and as she started to leave her body collided with another and she gasped sharply upon feeling the slight splash on the silk. Oh hell no.

"Tobias!" Her voice came out rather strange- starting out with anger and then suddenly remembering where she was, rising her pitch at the end to sound excited to see her brother and not like she was going to slap him. She forced a laugh at his words and glanced around momentarily, quickly snatching a napkin from a nearby tray and dabbing at her skirt. "You are quite funny tonight, aren't you?" She bit out in frustration as she looked at the wet spot on her dress. "How long have you been here? And you are already drinking?" The judgement was clear in her question as she glared at the glass in his hand.

“I’m funny all the time!” He couldn’t help the satisfied smirk on his face at the weird noise that came out of her. He knew that it would be easier for him if they got along or if he made an effort to stop their annoyance with each other. Still, he didn’t care to actually do anything about it. Face warm from his evening drinks, he has a sloppy smile on his face that only comes from when he gets the buzz from drinking too much. 

“Here…not too long but for the drinking I started a few hours ago. That doesn’t mean anything though. High society drinks are never strong,” he huffs. “You can drink and drink and barely get anything but,” a wink as he shows her a flask in his jacket pocket that’s much too big for any reasonable gentleman to be carrying. “I’m doing my part to help.”
