I adore this story. I have listened to this twice (on stream and just now) and I feel I don't have a full grasp of the story, in a way that's incredibly satisfying and makes me want to relisten immediately. Don't get me wrong, I understand the overall arc. Trying to escape from a time loop is an absolute classic. This episode hits the important beats and takes the concept for a spin.
But before I dive into the joy of Weird sci-fi audio fiction, a note on the characterization and voice acting. This team has done an incredible job with the characters. Caring for them is really the driving force of the story. You immediately get a sense of who Ali is and how the loop is affecting Ali's state of mind attitude towards life. I love a good "Let me care for you and share your worries" fight and I love that this personality trait of Marlows extends to work, not just this relationship.
Okay. Audio design nerdery. This episode uses some heavy-handed reverb and explores spatiality in a way that I absolutely adore. Some of the choices I can translate - flashbacks to old conversations, a character pacing a room. Others I can't (yet), but they still feel purposeful. This audio design isn't just supporting the narrative, sometimes it's the narrator. It adds to the Weird, surreal genre feeling and is a big part of why I want to dig in again.
The Fable/fable narration threaded through the episode, ugh. Stitched beautifully and the ending... This episode was very much my thing on paper and it did not disappoint. Thank you for the treat.
