Project #5 performance art

To me this performance art represents how society is blind to true beauty and that as long as you feel like a rock star when you look in the mirror then you are a rock star! Don’t let other people’s vision of beauty define how you feel about yourself.

Project #5

This project was really hard for me. I couldn’t seem to find inspiration at all. I ended up decided to take “getting pretty for others” to a literal form. I feel this class has really pulled me out of my comfort zone artistically. Which is great because that’s really the only way to grow is by challenging yourself to do things that are a little scary at times. I recently moved to NYC so I thought the perfect place for a lot of people to witness this would be on the subway. I hate a lot of direct attention on me so it was another scary thing for me to do. The whole was through 2 stops which each is about 2 min. So approx. 4 min total.I decided not having a mirror would add to the performance. I chose to it this way is because most people don’t actually see themselves when they are doing this. They see how fashion models or celebrities are, and they try to copy that unrealistic standard of beauty. They don’t see their own beauty. After stabbing myself in the eye a couple of times this is the results.

ROSELEE GOLDBERG-Performance: A Hidden History

Reading Roselee’s article, street art comes to mind. There are so many different types of art that you can find, could there possibly be just on definition to the performance they are doing? They are all performing live, just using different mediums to get their point across. With each individual performance, there is also different types of audience. Musical performers, chalk art, dance artists, poetry, and many more. Each with an individual statement they want to get out to the public. A lot has changed since the man with an accordion and monkey on his shoulder. It seems as though it has changed, as society has changed. Still, there seems to be a taboo with performance art. What and why are they doing, and is it making an impact, or nuisance? The movie and t.v. show that comes to mind would be FAME. All of the students go out on the street and let loose on the street in traffic. Today, it is the cowboy with a guitar and boots claiming fame. I am not sure how this would be received if put on display in an art museum. Then again, it is not about society rules, but the content of art.

Marina Abramovic: The Artist is Present

I apologize for my late responses…Life gets in the way. Marina Abramovic’ art is quite different then what we have observed in this class. Not sure if there might be a connection with what we did with words and their impact with expression. Whether it is considered a form of expression…like contemporary dance, theatre, modern art, or to portray self, art has taken many forms. The first image that comes to my mind is the old “Beatnik” stereotype that was given to the social crowd of performers that expressed themselves through poetry and “hipster” dress. As with a mime, they use expression without speaking. Back to the subject, so much stigma in culture and society values does not embrace expression of self, as Marina does. The one thing that I got out of Marina, and her performance, is the one thing that many people forget: simplicity. Just to gaze, no words, no obstructions, just the gaze into another’s eyes. Contemplation, quietness, rush of emotions, it is all or nothing, yet it is still just a gaze.

The Loop Forever - Reading response #3

Apologies class that I have posted this so late. Please excuse my tardiness. Again, this reading has opened up my eyes to another way of looking at gifs, and seeing them as artwork, and containing meaning outside of the actual content. As many gifs as I have seen, I have never said to myself I need to learn to do these. Gifs tend to use up a lot of my processing power on my laptop so I have mixed feelings about them. After reading this module, I am excited to learn. When I think of gifs, I think of the Roll Safe meme. It’s the most used one these days. I like this one purely because it is so animated and well done. You can almost hear the intonations of his words that go along with his animation.

I like this gig. It is well done, and it has great continuity, flow, and loop. Its beautiful and peaceful to look at and reminds me of home.

This one shows how much you can do with the limited color palette of GIFs.

I like the three-dimensionality of this one combined with the transparency of the crystals.

This one reminds me of Dali if he’d had access to the technology that we have access to.

The crystals are addictive, as well as the angel. One in constant motion, the other still, yet flowing. If that even makes sense? The choices were great, and one can interpret how they chose to.

Reading response #3 GIF’s

and I love the movieI had never heard of a GIF before this class. I’ve seen them many times on social media and even a few commercials and ads but until this class I didn’t know what to call them. I found it interesting that there has been art shows with them and I really found it interesting that some people sell them. It was kind of odd to me that one of the articles kept referring to them as trash or garbage. I guess that’s because there are so many of them and the ones that don’t get re-blogged millions times and even those, eventually pretty much get metaphorically thrown in the trash with the other lost GIFs. I think at least 80% of GIFs are for humorous purposes but there are some that are very beautiful and mesmerizing. I think it will be a fun project at the end of this module and I’m excited to see what everybody comes up with. Here’s a couple GIFsThat I found on the web and liked.
