Women empowerment is often spoken about as an idea, a campaign or something that trends for a while and then fades. It is not a concept to be admired from a distance. It is a necessity for any society that seeks fairness, progress, and sustainability.

Across the world, women have long played a central role in holding families, communities and societies together. Yet even today, many women continue to face barriers that restrict their access to education, employment, safety and decision-making. In India, these challenges are still deeply ingrained. Limited educational opportunities, early marriage, financial dependence, workplace discrimination and concerns about personal safety are part of everyday life for many women. These are not isolated experiences; they reflect systemic inequality, gender stereotypes and rigid social expectations. Over time, such conditions quietly restrict ambition and normalize limitations.

Women’s empowerment begins with access - to education, healthcare, financial independence and the freedom to make their own choices. When women receive these opportunities, the change begins to happen. Educated and financially independent women help build stronger communities and a more resilient society. Empowerment, therefore, is not only a women’s issue; it is a societal responsibility.

However, empowerment is often misunderstood as simply helping women. True empowerment goes deeper. It involves addressing the structures and mindsets that create inequality in the first place. Sustainable change requires long-term action, awareness and inclusion rather than temporary solutions or symbolic gestures.

This is where InAmigos Foundation’s Project Udaan plays a meaningful role. The initiative focuses on empowering women by collaborating with self-help groups in rural areas, promoting financial independence, skill development and menstrual hygiene awareness. By working at the grassroots level, Project Udaan recognizes that empowerment is built through practical support, confidence-building and community participation. Such initiatives help women become self-reliant and capable of shaping their own futures.

Empowerment also means giving women a voice - the ability to express opinions, participate in decision-making and take leadership roles in their homes and workplaces. A society cannot truly progress if women are expected to adjust to limitations instead of challenging them.

As a student and a woman, I believe empowerment should not be treated as a temporary discussion or moment. It should be a standard that exists in everyday life. When women rise, society moves forward. Empowering women leads to equality, economic growth and lasting social change, making it not just important, but essential.

A Packet of Milk Reminded Me About Awareness

(Even careful habits fail sometimes.)

Sometimes, it’s not the big events but the small, everyday incidents that quietly teach us important lessons.

Recently, I had one such experience with something as simple as a packet of milk. We often check expiry dates on products—it’s something most of us do out of habit.

But that day, at my regular neighbourhood shop where I buy daily essentials and usually double-check everything, familiarity took over. I bought the milk on autopilot, assuming it was fine as always. It was only while cutting open the packet to use it that the habit kicked back in. I thought, "Let me just confirm the date," and there it was: expired by one day. I went back to inform the shopkeeper, thinking it would be replaced. Instead, I was told that since the packet was opened, it couldn’t be taken back and he insisted that I can use it, but I just bought a new one.What stayed with me wasn’t just the denial—it was the explanation: "This isn’t a big issue; many people use such products without problems and expiry dates are just written." They even mentioned similar packets had been sold since morning. That made me pause.I chose not to argue further; sometimes preserving your peace is more important than proving a point.

Awareness vs. Assumption:

There’s an unspoken assumption that if we buy something from a shop we visit every day, it must be safe. We pay full price expecting freshness, not risk. And just because “everyone uses it” doesn’t mean everyone actually knows.

It often just means many didn’t notice. And honestly, why would anyone knowingly buy expired milk?

Choosing Not to Take the Risk

I choose not to consume it. Not because something would definitely go wrong—but because something could.

Awareness isn’t fear; it’s responsibility. “Probably safe” isn’t the same as “safe”—especially for health.

Simple acts like speaking up in family discussions, helping make community decisions, or leading small local projects can also feel impossible. The journey from finding a voice to confidently leading is a profound and transformative change. Initiatives like Project Udaan from the InAmigos Foundation support women as they grow - from speaking up to leading projects, making decisions and creating changes that touch themselves, their families and their communities. Started in 2020 by Govind Shukla, Project Udaan works with women in villages and small towns across India. Its goal is to bridge the gap between what women can do and the opportunities they currently have. The program offers women a safe environment to learn, express themselves and gain confidence.

Udaan helps women through different types of skill training, awareness sessions and community support, enabling them to move beyond simply taking part in activities to confidently leading their families and communities. In many rural areas, women usually hesitate to speak up - they may not fully know their rights, feel unsure about communicating or lack support from others. Udaan’s workshops guide women in understanding their rights, along with knowledge about health and hygiene, financial skills and effective communication. These sessions do more than share information - they help women believe in themselves, showing that their voice matters and that they can influence decisions that shape their lives.

Self-Help Groups play a central role in this journey. These small groups of women meet regularly to discuss challenges, save money together and support one another’s growth. Within these groups, women practice leadership every day - organizing meetings, managing savings, leading discussions and making collective decisions about loans, businesses, or community projects. Over time, women who were once quiet gain confidence, while active members step into leadership roles, such as group coordinators. In this way, women not only take charge within their SHGs but also bring leadership into their families and communities.

Facing Challenges Together

The journey toward leadership is not always easy. Many women face resistance within their families, limited time due to household responsibilities and deeply rooted social expectations. This program responds by offering flexible learning schedules, mentorship and peer support, allowing women to grow at their own pace.

The impact of this approach is visible. More than 900 women have gained confidence, developed skills and taken on active roles in their families and communities. What begins with finding a voice gradually grows into a shared vision - one where women earn, guide and inspire others around them.
