Weddings Are Just Funerals With Cake
(warnings: transphobia, almost an anti-gay slur, swearing and mentions of hailing satan) Patton was getting married today. This was his wedding. There were beautiful decorations in almost every room of the mansion. Everyone was in a busied rush. People gave him congratulations and were so happy for him. So why wasn’t he happy? Simple. Cause not only this was a forced marriage by his parents, he was transgender. Here he was, staring at the person in the mirror. The person he so desperately tried to leave behind. There was no Patton here. Not in his damned parent’s mansion. No, there was only Patricia. And Patricia was staring back at him. His nightmare with pigtail extensions, heavy makeup and a white poofy gown was staring at him. His stupid mother had dressed him herself. She kept commenting how he was “a beautiful bride” and how “this was always her happiest dream”. “I do wish you didn’t get rid of your breasts Patricia. The dress is slipping down.” She said. “Good. And its Patton.” “Shush with that trans crap. You were born a woman and so you shall act like one. No more of this nonsense. Now at least pretend you’re at a wedding and not a funeral.” Patton frowned at his mother. He didn’t like being “rebellious” but he was starting to feel like a brat. He constantly pulled his extensions out. He purposely smudged his makeup. Heck he let the dress fall. However it was no use. His mother put the fake hair back in. The makeup lady came back to reapply the goop. His cousin pushed the dress back in place. Patton refused to cry. He would be strong during this hell. However his lower lip started to tremble. “You look gorgeous dear. Please just do this for us. The man you’re marrying is a smart and wealthy one. He’ll treat you right.” His mother tried to soothe. Patton frowned once more. “He’s not Logan.” His mother sighed and tried once more. She smiled once more and started getting herself ready.
“I know he looks intimidating, but he had dinner with us a week ago. He’s really a sweetheart.” “He isn’t Virgil.” Now his mother was frowning. However once more she plastered that stupid fake grin on her face. “Have you heard him sing? He sounds like an angel Patricia!” “Roman sings better.” Before his mother could snap at him someone knocked on the door. “Are you ready? The wedding is in five!” someone said. “Yes!” Patton’s mother said. Patton felt his heart beat faster. Nervous sweat was definitely dripping from places. His mother grabbed his wrist and dragged him along. Soon they were at the massive ballroom where his parents used to throw parties when he lived here. The massive dark wood doors were closed. He could hear the 500 people chattering on the inside. On the outside was Patton’s dad. “You look gorgeous Patricia.” He said with a fond grin. Patton glared at him. “I may be a girl in your eyes today, but im Patton. Im a man.” “Shush the wedding is starting.” The wedding march began to play and two butlers opened the massive wooden doors. Patton’s father linked arms with him and began to walk him down the long red carpet aisle. Patton felt wobbly in the white stilettos his mom made him wear. As picture lights flashed Patton wobbled, fell, wobbled, tripped and fell again. Everyone was laughing at him. It hurt so much. His father let him go to stand before his “groom”. The man looked just as uncomfortable as Patton was. Patton pitied him and tuned out the priest’s speech. Instead Patton looked around the room. On his side of the room, all of his family and family friends were there. His many cousins, his aunts and uncles, grandma, his grandfathers, heck even his neighbors were there. They all were smiling. They had proud tears in their eyes like Patton had just got out of drug rehab or something. It made him very uneasy. “Now for the vows. Do you, Edward Olekson, take Patricia Sanders, as your lawfully wedded wife?” Please. “To have and to hold, in sickness and in health?”
Someone stop this! “To love forever, until death do you part?” “I do sir.” The priest turned, smiling to Patton. “And do you Patricia Sanders, take Edward Olekson, to be your lawfully wedded husband?” I don’t want this! “To have and to hold, through sickness and in health?” Help me! “To obey, to serve, and to laugh with for the rest of your days?” No! “To love forever until death do you part?” “I-“ BAM! The big dark wood doors burst open. When Patton turned his head, tears fell down his face immediately. There they were. Logan, Roman and Virgil were here! And whats more, they were dressed in wedding gowns! They had extensions in their hair! They had heavy makeup on! And they looked pissed! “Scuse me! Gay guys coming through!” Roman called. Roman easily power walked through the aisle. However, Virgil had Logan holding on to him cause poor Logan couldn’t walk in heels. Wait, they all were in heels?! Patton started laughing and crying in relief. “Who are you?!” Patton’s father demanded. “Just some gays trying to get our man back.” Logan said. “Yeah it was fucked up what you did to your son y’know. Forcing him to be married like this.” Virgil said while examining his nails. Roman grinned and took Patton’s hands. “Sorry we’re late for your wedding my love. Are you ready to leave a bit early?” Patton nodded and started sobbing. Roman pulled Patton in the best hug he’s ever had in his life. “Get away from my daughter you fa-“
Patton didn’t want to be here anymore. “Lets go loves!”
Patton’s boyfriends grinned, ignoring the words from everyone else in the room. They were about to leave when Patton’s father grabbed him. However Logan acted quickly. He took off one of his heels and threw it at the pissed off man. While that was a distraction, Logan kicked off his other heel and picked Patton up. With a whoop from Roman the boys ran down the red carpet aisle. While he was laughing, Patton heard Virgil yell.
“Hail satan! Hail satan!”
Outside was Logan’s car. Roman quickly got in the passenger seat while Logan deposited Patton in the back seat. Within a few seconds Virgil jumped into the other seat in the back and shut the door. “Drive man drive!” Logan pressed hard on the gas and the car sped off. As the lovers left, Patton turned his head to see a crowd of people pouring out of the mansion. A grin made it’s way to Patton’s face once again. He kept looking until he felt something slip out of his hair. He turned to see Virgil was pulling his veil and extensions out. “Not to be rude or anything, but everything looks tacky.” He said as he got some makeup wipes out of a bag on the floor. Patton laughed and looked at the men in the front of the car. Roman looked back at him with a wide grin in return. “Thank you guys f-“ “Don’t. It would be insane if we didn’t come for you Patton.” Logan said, looking at Patton from the mirror. “This is what Prince Charmings do for other Prince Charmings!” Roman added. “Pat we’d never leave you to those fuckers. We love you too much.” Virgil said as he wiped the drugstore makeup off of Patton. Patton giggled once more. He felt like he could cry, but there were no more tears left. Good. Patton didn’t like crying. Logan stopped by some fast food place and ordered everyone food and milkshakes. The look on the employee who gave them their things was priceless. “Wait wait can we take a picture of y’all?” A woman employee asked. “Of course!” Patton and Roman replied. So after a few ridiculous posed pictures, they made their way back on the road. Patton sipped his milkshake happily and rested his head on Virgil’s bare shoulder. “Why are you guys wearing dresses and stuff by the way?” Patton asked. “It was to show those fiends a thing or two!” Roman said before sipping his own milkshake. “We figured you would be comfortable if we were dressed like you. Y’know..four men in wedding shit.” Virgil added as he stroked Patton’s head. “It also was to make you laugh Patton. After something horrible like that you deserve to laugh. It’s one of the best things about you after all.” Logan concluded. Patton smiled and nuzzled Virgil. “You guys are the best. You guys are the most amazing boyfriends in the world.”
So Patton wasn’t a “bride” that day. He was a boyfriend to people who loved him the most. And that was the only thing that made Patton happy on his “wedding day”.

Chloé hated this stupid app.
How is Adrien not on her list of compatible matches? Clearly the app was broken and not worth everyone’s mind. She and Max have been arguing about it since he overheard her complaining about the app. What made the whole thing worse was that most of the class seemed to agree with him.
“…The whole thing is a trashy only internet quiz for people who have no lives.” Chloé exclaimed to Max just as Marinette and Adrien entered the room.
“It isn’t some ordinary internet quiz. There is so much processing of data, use of algorithmic solutions that would take months to explain and you would not even understand a fraction of. I have yet to crack the formula. But I guarantee that it is more then trash.” Max defended vehemently.
Adrien decided to avoid getting involved and tried to slowly move to his seat, but unfortunately, Chloé’s vision noticed his movement and pounced.
“Adrikins.” She exclaimed in a saddened tone as she pushed passed Marinette to get to him. “Please tell me you don’t believe all the crap about this stupid app?”
The model scratched his head. He noticed Marinette looking at him, he could tell she was curious about his answer.
“Why do you think the app is not effective.” Adrien deflected. He wanted to avoid talking about his views on the app until he talked with Marinette.
Chloé gasped.
“So many reasons! For one thing the questions are these weird riddles that make no sense! Like why would I even WANT to touch money that is on the floor? I don’t care who it belongs to!” Chloé ranted. “Not to mention it doesn’t let you make a new profile if you delete it! I tried making a new one but it just gave me all of the same information and profile I had before deleting.”
“It is a countermeasure to avoid fraud!” Max answered. “Since you already put in your original name, photo of yourself and age, if you tried putting the exact information in, it will simply reconnect you to the old account to avoid people trying to cheat the system. My test accounts got deleted yesterday because they found out I used stock photos for them.
Chloé rolled her eyes.
“But most importantly is that it completely messed up my matches. Look at these losers!” Chloé showed Adrien the list, she had a few in the 70% range. Adrien did believe some of the guys on that list did go to this school. “Of course if this list was legitimate, you would be on the list.”
Adrien noted that as a point on why this app has credibility.
“Its just a dumb app. You didn’t buy into this did you Adrikins?”
Adrien took a step back, looking for some way out.
“I… uh…”
Thankfully for Adrien, Madame Bustier stepped in.
“Alright Class, Everyone to your seats”
The class quietly stopped talking and moved back to their seats.
The designer was watching the model in the seat in front of her. What did Adrien think of the App? Did he want to tell her that he believes in it completely and wants to try going out with her? Is he angry about it and feels that she is now standing in the way of his potential relationship with Kagami?
Marinette shakes her head, this was not gonna turn out like her nightmare from last night. Besides, Adrien wanted to meet her in the locker room, not in the library, her nightmare was now not gonna come true….. she hoped.
She noticed Adrien look back at her.. He mouthed the word ‘lunch’ to her. She could tell he was confirming their meet up that day. She gave a quick nod. Adrien smiled and turned back. The brief smile giving her a touch of comfort.
I apologize for being late, their was a discussion in the teacher’s lounge about an interesting new phone app.” The red headed teacher confessed.
“Was it Soulmate Searcher?” Rose asked. The blond rising from her seat as she asked.
“I believe that was the name of it. My colleague mentioned that their sister was trying it out and has a date with someone they met on the app.” Ms.Bustier replied.
“Are you thinking of trying it out?” Myléne inquired.
“There will be plenty of time to talk about that stuff after class.” The teacher said with a soft smile. Though she didn’t let on She was the one that had tried out the app and was in the teacher’s lounge messaging her date for Friday.
As class began, in the corner of the room sat a brunette that had interestingly kept herself out of the whole discussion about the app. She looked at the app and at her profile. She had not answered a single question, if she wanted to match up with the guy she wanted, she needed to be careful.
_______________________________________________________________________
“Adrien! Where are you going? I really wanted to continue our conversation from earlier.”
“I am sorry Chloé. I am in a hurry, I have something really important thing to do during lunch. We can talk later.” Adrien answered as he quickly headed out of the class.
Marinette wondered what the model was referring to, she could of sworn that Adrien wanted to talk with her during lunch. Something important must have come up. Marinette got up from her desk and held in her sigh. Maybe it wasn’t that important that they talked.
As she was about to head out for lunch, her phone buzzed.
at the locker room
Marinette turned red, she was the important thing he needed to do. She mentally slapped her self for phrasing it that way.
“Important message?” Her best friend cooed.
“I well umm.” Marinette stammered.
“Relax Marinette, I am just teasing.” Alya assured.
She went to her ear.
“Don’t worry about yesterday, that is staying between us.”
“Thanks Alya. You are the best.” Marinette whispered back before heading out of the classroom.
“Hi Alya.” a familiar voice called from behind the reporter.
“Oh hey Lila. Hows it going?”
“I am alright, I just wanted to ask if you know anything about the new app that has gotten popular. ‘Soulmate searcher’. I heard Max and Chloé arguing about it and I was curious.” The exchange student inquired.
“Oh its great! Pretty much the entire school is trying it out. Are you thinking about getting into it?”
“Well, I am usually apprehensive about trying out apps that give out personal information. I imagine Adrien and Prince Ali would be the same considering how popular they are.”
“Oh its completely safe. Max has tried hacking into it over a dozen times, their cyber security is solid, and I can assure you Adrien has an account.” Alya eased.
“Oh that is a relief. But do you think the app is just a silly quiz or do you think there is more to it? I wouldn’t want to get my hopes up on meeting my soulmate on here if it doesn’t work.”
“Well Nino and I have a compatibility of 85% as of this morning, so I would say it matches up pretty well. Ivan, Kim, Myléne, Rose, Marinette and Juleka say that the match ups were accurate.”
“Marinette said her match ups were accurate? Who did she match up with? I am sure they are a great guy.” Lila prodded with a faux smile that would fool most people.
Alya hesitated, she realized she was getting into some dangerous territory. She couldn’t just reveal Marinette’s list its personal.
“I shouldn’t be talking about who was on her personal list. Everyone’s list is only visible to them and it would be an invasion of privacy unless she told you directly.” Alya answered.
“Of course. I just felt bad that Marinette and I haven’t been getting along and I wanted to see if I could help her get set up with one of her matches. Perhaps putting in a good word for her.” Lila lied
“Thats really nice of you Lila. but you don’t need to worry about Marinette she will be fine.” Alya said with confidence.
“Thats good to hear. Please let Marinette know that if she does want help she can reach out to me.” Lila answered. “I think I will give this app a go. Thanks Alya.”
“Glad I could help.”
Lila kept up her smile as she left the classroom, once she was out of Alya’s sight. Her eyes narrowed and her smile vanished.
Marinette is someone who has a clear crush on Adrien. Alya telling me that Marinette will be fine with her list means that Adrien must be Somewhere on the rankings. I need to find out how high and Beat that percentage. But to do that. I need to find her list… or I need to see Adrien’s.
Lila smiled at the thought. Adrien was a much easier target, all she needed to do was find him, and then she can find out everything she needs to know.
_______________________________________________________________________
Marinette quickly headed to the locker room where Adrien was patiently waiting.
“Sorry for keeping you waiting.” Marinette answered as she caught her breath from sprinting.
“Its fine Marinette. I am glad you could make it.” Adrien responded with a soft smile that made the girls heart melt.
“So… what did you want to talk about?” Marinette asked with cautious optimism.
Adrien felt himself blush a bit.
“I was gonna ask about what you thought of the app. The one we were both using this morning. You know…” Adrien scratched the back of his head with his left hand. He felt awkward.
“O-Oh! Um, well. I think that its a bit more then just a random set of questions like chloé said.” Marinette starts off. She wanted to say that she believed it full heartedly, that it was as if cupid himself crafted the perfect matching system for her and Adrien. But she remembered the dream she had last night, she remembered how angry he was in her dream. She needed to know what he was feeling about the app. “Though of course its still updating! The profile could change at the drop of a hat while its calibrating. I remember Alya mentioning that it could fluctuate and any number set up now isn’t set in stone.”
“Even if its 100?”
The question hung in the air just as much for her as it did for him. They were both aware of their compatibility test score.
“I never heard of a case like this. Do you think it was a bug?” Marinette asked. internally thinking that he was not pleased that they were both 100% compatible. She felt her heart crack at the thought. “Alya mentioned that she and Nino were only at 85% and they are super close. So… I can’t be certain.”
“I don’t know. It might be possible that something glitched out. It did only recently get a global release.” Adrien answered. He looked at her closely, waiting to see her relived reaction that she doesn’t need to take this so seriously. Truthfully, he didn’t entirely believe something happened. The more Adrien thought about it, Marinette did seem like someone that he could align with on a lot of things. Sure they had different perspectives and even did have some differing opinions, it made them both learn. If he was being completely honest, she was one of the people he is glad was high on the list.
Marinette tried her best to disguise her sorrow from the thought of their 100% was somehow not valid. It hurt to think about.
“But considering it was with you. I can believe it was a high a number at least. So it being 100% could be valid.” Adrien answered.
Marinette’s face blushed at his words. Did he just say that he thought she and him were highly compatible?
FUCK! I just said that I honestly thought that Marinette and I were highly compatible. She had given him the chance to dismiss this as anything serious and I messed it up! Why did I say that? Sure I think its true but she will be angry just like in my nightmare and get akumatized. Adrien mentally screamed
“It is possible.” Marinette spoke up. “ I can’t see how having someone I already know being compatible with me would be a bad thing.”
“There is also the course of the profile correction. We still have 13 more days of fine tuning our profiles. So things on the list could shake up, should you want that.” Marinette answered quickly.
“Thats true. No need to jump in on this too quickly.” Adrien sighed with relief. Marinette was handling this rationally, which made sense, Marinette always knew how to clear her head and look at things objectively. That was why she was so good at figuring out how to help people.
It is one of the reasons I like her. Adrien’s thought surprised for a second but he quickly recovered and snapped back to the conversation to catch her response.
“Yea… no need to think to much of it.” Marinette agreed, her tone a touch sadder then before.
“Yea. I am glad we both aren’t overthinking this too much.” Adrien smiled softly. “I am glad we could talk about this.”
“Of course…” Marinette was doing her best not to let her face betray her feelings
Adrien turned and started to walk off before stopping just short of the door.
“Marinette?”
“Yes?” Marinette jolted, not expecting anymore words from the model.
“After the profiles are complete, and if we are both number one on the other’s list. Do you want to… give it a shot?” Adrien asked as he tried to keep his tone steady, His face was beat red as he was doing something on complete impulse. “If you want to that is. You are free to say no.”
Marinette felt her face burn at his question.
“Yes! I mean sure. It is worth trying out.” Marinette responded.
Adrien turned to her. He had a soft genuine smile that made Marinette feel as if cupid had struck her in the heart once again. But what he said next made her feel like Cupid dropped a tank on her.
“Thank you Marinette. It would be pretty nice if one of my best friends turned out to be my soul mate.”
Marinette could feel her face heat up.

THERE I FINISHED part 3 (I don’t know how both Part 1 and part 2 got over 1000 notes. The notes usually start to dip after the first part.)

The Fate of Black Cats
So I found myself reading some soulmate AU’s and I had this idea for one that nobody asked for. Well here it is anyway. For your reading pleasure.
Soulmate AU where whatever they write on their arms, appears on their soulmate’s. What happens when Marinette becomes convinced that her soulmate is gone for good? Part ½ Rating: G+? Idk, it’s kinda angsty
When Marinette was four years old, drawings started appearing on her arms. At first they frightened her, but her mamma assured her that they were only drawings from her soulmate. Whatever he wrote or drew on his arms would appear on hers and vice versa. After that, she always carried around a marker and would tell her soul mate stories on her arms. She drew him flowers, cakes from her parent’s bakery, the funny dog she saw outside her window, anything she could think of to show him. He wrote back in music notes and cats and silly stick figures. She insisted she learn to read and write so that she could really talk to him. Together they practiced their ABC’s and eventually held conversations. They couldn’t tell each other their names on their arms, but that was ok. He was her boy, and she was his girl. Their arms were never without ink for years to come.
When Marinette turned six, she decided she wanted to really talk to her boy. So she asked her mom if she could call him. She looked a little surprised, but said that if his mamma would give him the phone number she would call him for her. It wasn’t long after that, that neat and unfamiliar handwriting appeared on her arm. She showed it to her mamma and she dialed the phone for her and let her have it. When a lady picked up, she cleared her throat and spoke in her most adult voice.
“Hello, I need to talk to my boy.”
“Alright, here he is.” Marinette waited impatiently while the phone was handed off.
“Girl?”
“Boy!”
They talked for hours. They could finally say whatever they wanted, and it was much faster than writing it down. While they talked they drew each other pictures. It was only the first of many conversations.
They were eight before they told each other their names.
“Marinette is a princess name! It’s pretty and magical just like you!”
“If Marinette is a princess name then you have to be my knight. Knight Adrien.”
“Together we save all of France from an evil sorcerer who enslaves people to make them fight us and try and capture our magic! Knight Adrien and Princess Marinette to the rescue!”
“I think you mean Princess Marinette and Knight Adrien. I, obviously, am the more powerful one.”
“Well duh! You’re not royalty for nothing! I am but your humble sidekick.”
“Nonsense, we’re partners. What’s a princess without her knight?”
“And what’s a knight without his princess?”
“I love you, my princess.”
“I love you too, my knight.”
For years, these daily phone calls were enough for them. They told each other everything. They made up stories of their adventures together. Marinette and Adrien, best friends, storytellers, soulmates.
When they were eleven, Adrien’s mom started getting sick. He wouldn’t tell her much about it, but she knew he was worried. She got worse and worse, until one day Marinette called, and an unfamiliar voice answered the phone.
“I need to talk to my boy.”
“He isn’t here,” the man responded, and hung up.
When she tried calling back no one answered. She tried writing messages on her arms, but he never responded. Marinette grew desperate. She called multiple times a day and covered her arms in flowers and words, anything to try and get him to respond. But he never did. Finally, after a week, whenever she called the number she had long sense memorized, the line was disconnected. She cried for a week and refused to come out of her room. She wrote on her arms hoping for a reply, but none ever came. Finally she wrote just one sentence.
Just tell me if you’re alive.
No reply came, and Marinette promised never to write on her arms again.
The next morning, she came down stairs with her arms scrubbed clean, and for the first time since she was small, there was no trace of ink anywhere.
“Hey, princess, what happened to your drawings?” her papa asked.
“I’m not a princess anymore. I can’t be a princess when my knight is dead.”
Her parents never brought it up again.
Every year on Adrien’s birthday, Marinette broke her promise. She would draw only one thing. It was a black cat cuddling a ladybug, his favorite animal and hers, with the words a Princess and her Knight surrounding it. She never expected a response, and she never got one, but it was her way of remembering the soulmate she never met.
School was harder after that. All her classmates had soulmates who drew them pictures, and eventually some of them met them. She watched her classmates fall in love with their soulmates and send them messages, and ached at the loss of hers. She took to wearing long sleeves, even when it was warm. She never told them what happened to hers. She let them assume what they wanted. Some thought they were fighting. Some thought she was one of the rare few born without one. Chloe was a member of the latter group. It all came to a head when she was fourteen.
“Poor little Marinette. I guess even fate is choosey when it comes doling out soulmates.” Most days, Marinette was good at drowning her out. But that day was his birthday. Her traditional drawing already marred her wrist. “Who would want to be your soulmate? Even if you had one I would bet he would be the scummiest, the most disgusting-“
“He was wonderful!” Marinette screamed. She marched over to Chloe, poking her in the chest. “He was kind, and creative, and funny! He played piano, and he liked cats. He had blonde hair and green eyes, and he loved me!” She could feel tears threatening to overflow as she screamed at Chloe. “And now he’s dead! He died Chloe! I will never meet him!” She could see the horror growing in Chloe’s face, but she had put up with her for too long to stop now. “He died, and now I have to sit here and listen to you disgrace him. I have to listen to you try and sully what few memories I have of him with your lies. I have had enough! Don’t you think I have suffered enough?” At this, Marinette seemed to collapse in on herself. For the first time, she noticed that the entire school was watching. They were dead silent, hanging on her every word. She felt heavy as her tears finally dripped down her cheeks. She looked back up at Chloe, hugging her arms. Chloe was looking on with horror frozen on her face. It would seem even she had a since of decency. Finally, she whispered to Chloe, “Haven’t I suffered enough?” and fled the school. Tears blurred her eyes as she ran. On her way down out, she bumped into a blonde boy she could barely see through her tears.
“Are you ok? Can I-“
“Please don’t touch me.” Marinette choked out and continued on her way out. Once home she locked herself into her room. She refused to come out the rest of the day.
The next day at school, four things happened. First, Chloe avoided her. She wouldn’t look at her or sit near her or talk to her. This suited Marinette just fine.
Second, two new kids were introduced to the class. Marinette was studiously avoiding looking at anyone and was doodling in her sketchbook, so she missed their names. It wasn’t until the girl sat down next to her, that she looked up.
“Hi, I’m Alya, what’s your name?”
“Marinette.”
“Well, Marinette, we’re going to be best friends.” Marinette could feel a smile tugging at her lips as class began.
Third, Ivan turned into a rock monster. Like literally made of rocks. The crazy new girl went running after him yelling about super heroes, and Marinette ran home.
Fourth, Marinette became Ladybug. When she got home, she found a weird box with earrings inside, and a magic talking bug that turned her into a spandex wearing superhero named Ladybug. It’s safe to say the Marinette’s life was never same.
She gradually grew accustomed to her new role and her partner, Chat Noir. They learned to work together and managed to do a decent job of keeping the city safe. She enjoyed having a purpose, even if her partner was a little ridiculous.
Marinette was not very involved in school after her fight with Chloe. Chloe no longer bullied her, but much of her class looked at her with pity. She couldn’t stand it. She eventually discovered that the other new kid’s name was Adrien. Looking at him was a like a punch in the gut. Blonde hair, green eyes, named Adrien. If it weren’t for his subdued and reserved attitude, he could have been her Adrien. She tended to avoid him if only to save herself the pain of digging up old memories. Someone must have clued him in as to why, because he left her alone. She caught him looking at her sometimes, but he never forced a conversation with her.
A year later found her at fifteen celebrating Adrien’s birthday alone. Alya caught her drawing on her wrist before class started.
“What are you doing? I never see you writing on your arms.” She couldn’t see Adrien perk up in front of her and decided to answer truthfully.
“It’s my soulmate’s birthday,” she explained, “if he were alive, he would be fifteen today.” Marinette didn’t notice Adrien slowly turning around in his seat to look at her, she was too busy drawing, but Alya did. “Every year on his birthday I draw the same thing here on my wrist it’s my way of remembering him. See he loved black cats, I and I like ladybugs. We used to tell each other stories where I was the princess and he was my knight. This is how I remember him.” She showed the completed drawing to Alya, then rolled her sleeve back down and got her books ready for class.
Alya stared at Adrien’s wrist as the same drawing took shape there. He was staring at Marinette completely dumbfounded, before he turned to meet Alya’s eyes. In them he learned a new definition of fear. Alya was looking at him with murder in her eyes.
It is really cute, I really want a sequel.
I bet our entire universe is in a tiny glass jar placed neatly on a shelf in some alien child’s room as a science project he got a C on.
No but like, just imagine though.
Some lonely student with no friends who doesn’t even have the benefit of being good at math and stuff. The awkward one in their class, who isn’t witty enough to be the clown, isn’t charismatic enough to be popular, isn’t smart enough to be a star student or sweet enough to be a teacher’s pet, athletic enough for the jocks or creative enough for the art kids. They aren’t even outcast enough for the outcast kids, because it’s not like they’re exceptionally weird or something. They’re just… kind of there.
And then they get this assignment for their science class. Make a micro universe. They’re one of the last kids to pick up their equipment so they get one of the older sets, with the run-down tools that have wonky handles, and the containment unit’s got a dent in it already, and they’re missing some parts that they should have, but the teacher just tells them it’ll be taken into account for the assessment of their end product.
So they start out and it’s just another thing they’re not very good at. They follow the instructions, but the instructions are always calling for this or that they don’t have. They mess up shaping some of their initial celestial bodies, and there’s an early screw up that makes everything explode for some reason. It’s disheartening. But they need it for the grade, so they keep at it. It’s a mess, though. Their stars keep dying and their planets are too far apart, they don’t have enough of the right ingredients to make habitable biodomes, and one of the few they do get working suddenly develops oxygen, like what even…?
It’s a mess. It’s a mess, and they put it aside in disgust and despair, and already start rehearsing all the excuses they’ll give their teacher, about how they just couldn’t do it right because the whole thing was rigged from the outset and it’s not fair and maybe they could do better if someone would just give them the chance to do better instead of always telling them to ‘figure it out’…
When they wake up the next morning, they sigh and check over their project. Probably short an inhabitable biodome, and they were already running extremely low on those, considering they had to make do with an eighth of the expected… wait.
They check the poisoned biodome, and blink.
It’s not dead?
Well… most of it’s dead. But it’s not entirely dead, which is what should have happened. They watch, curious, and tweak a few of the settings. The remaining organisms are technically burning to death, but at a very slow rate. They’re also consuming one another to try and fuel themselves. It’s… bizarre, and strangely violent, but it’s kind of working. And it’s a little mesmerizing to watch, really.
The kid makes a special not to keep an eye on that planet. Then they go back to the other inhabitable biodomes. The good thing about everything being so far apart, they suppose, is that at least if something goes wrong in one segment of the micro universe, it doesn’t have to affect the other. That sounds like the kind of observation they might earn extra marks for, so they note it down. And they change the wonky biodome’s designation from Microbe Rock to Oxygen Disaster.
It quickly becomes the most interesting part of their project, really. The biological life in Oxygen Disaster is weird. It starts out really small, as expected, and then it starts getting huge. Nothing looks right. The natural development rates have been heavily skewed, and everything dies, but usually most species procreate first, so they just sort of carry on with things. Extinction rates are higher than anywhere else in the project, by far. New species crop up and then die out. External factors cause unexpected variations in climate and environment, and the whole thing is dramatically unstable.
Every night the kid goes to sleep thinking they’ll wake up the next morning to find it’s all dead, and they’ll finally cross Oxygen Disaster off their list of ‘successes’. Every morning they get up and it’s still going. By the time they’re supposed to hand in their project, the planet has an extinction list that’s nightmarishly long, and the number of complications and catastrophes it’s suffered is huge. But it’s still going. There’s this weird new species that’s suddenly started to develop civilization, of all things, even though it’s way later and way weirder than anyone else.
When they bring it in for assessment on science day, they’re almost kind of excited to be able to really talk about it with people. Their teacher wanted these to be solo projects, so discussing progress was discouraged - not that any of their classmates would really want to chit-chat with them about it, either. The star pupils turn in their projects and they are, as expected, replete with life. The teacher gives them full marks and has them put their micro universes into the Soul Forge, to distribute the energy of them back into the ether. The under-achievers turn in unfinished projects. Some are even worse than the kid’s, with only one or two inhabited worlds, or the wrong life scheme, or even just utter failure. Those get trashed, of course. The middle-range projects mostly get accepted.
They’re not the last kid to be assessed, but it’s pretty close. They have to remind the teacher about their discussion over the missing materials and limited tools, and then wait while they find the note they made about it. When they finally find them, with an acknowledging nod, the kid can’t wait anymore, and they burst out with all the questions and observations and things they want to ask about. The teacher clearly isn’t expecting any degree of enthusiasm from them. They blink, and just sort of nod.
“Well, these sorts of difficulties were anticipated,” they note.
“But - but it should have all died,” the kid insists, and tries to show their notes on Oxygen Disaster again.
The teacher stops them. It’s been a long day, and the stellar projects have already been seen to. They commend them for having a creative failure, but remind them that this is not supposed to be an art project. But in light of their obvious effort, the failure merits a C grade. Well done. They can put it in the compactor now, and free up the table space.
The compactor.
Right.
The kid picks up their micro universe, and gathers up their notes, and heads towards it.
And they stop, looking again at the readouts for all their biodomes. Not even just Oxygen Disaster, but the other ones, too. They’re pretty good, really. They work like how they’re supposed to, but with plenty of quirks as well. There’s so much space between them all, it’s doubtful they’d have any interactions soon. But they wonder. What would happen if Oxygen Disaster managed to interact with more stable environments? What will happen, regardless, if it just keeps going?
What can a little thing do, if it’s given a real chance?
They glance at the distracted teacher, and then carry their project to their locker instead. They sneak it into the bottom compartment, and when the class is over, they carry it home under their coat. When their parents ask about it, they just say that the teacher agreed to let them work on it a little longer for extra marks. Then they put it back onto the shelf in the room, and hook it up to the data analyser instead.
They go to their research terminal, and start looking up more information on micro universes.
Oh, good.
I liked this very much. All the history, the micro universes. I loved all of this.
