This whole Taylor Swift vs. Spotify thing completely enraged me. I'm a premium Spotify user. Although I wouldn't call myself a Swiftie, I did go to the Fearless concert and I own some CDs and t-shirts and miscellaneous Taylor Swift merch.
I am a devoted fangirl. If I become a fan of a band/artist/author/actor/creator, I will support them.
I've spent thousands on concerts, merch, t-shirts, movie tickets, magazines, kickstarters, DVDs, CDs, calendars....just all the useless shit, knowing that they are ridiculously overpriced because of so many middlemen and contractors and distributors wanting to make their profit.
I don't mind; I'm a fangirl. That's what I do.
Most of the creators I support, I wouldn't have discovered if it wasn't for some sort of free streaming service. YouTube, Spotify, and the like are the reasons why I've been able to fall in love with so many artists.
Take Emblem3, for instance.
Yeah, I got introduced to them through The X Factor USA, but I fell in love with them through YouTube. That's where I found their old songs. Sure, those fans who made lyric videos technically "stole" from them because they didn't pay royalties, but if it wasn't for them, I wouldn't have known the beautiful words they wrote. Yes, I've illegally downloaded their songs, but I've also gone out and bought multiple copies of their actual CD. When you're a fangirl, things like record sales and album booklets and owning physical copies of all possible versions of an album--all these things matter.
Also, this idea that you need money in order to listen to music? No. Music is one of the purest forms of art and you cannot deprive someone of it just because they don't have the money. That's not okay.
