one time i was making potato soup and i needed broth for it but i was out of broth. but in my dog food cabinet there was a carton of chicken broth that i had bought for my dog. now the box did say HUMAN GRADE and the ingredients were just bog standard chicken broth. it did say something about joint health for dogs on there. but the ingredients were normal. i even compared the ingredients list to some normal person broth and they were the same. so i did put dog broth in that soup and it did taste completely normal. but i did use the dog broth.

Scooby-Doo is a dog who can talk, which is amazing, and he largely uses his powers of speech to communicate how scared he is of ghosts and monsters, and basically the only thing his owners do is drive him around the country putting him inside various haunted houses and such. I wish I could take Scooby-Doo aside, I want to say to him, these people are not your friends.

actually once you do vote by mail once, it feels STUPID that in-person voting is even a thing. getting to sit with your ballot in your house, easily see your options, have time to do research and consider your choice, talk with friends and neighbors about their vote. it's especially so for small local elections and primaries where you might not have heard about different candidates and really have to ask around, attend local events, or dig into local news stories to find out who they are and what they stand for. but, of course, not allowing voters to easily research and carefully consider their votes is why there is opposition to vote by mail in the first place.

I get the sentiment, but in person voting needs to remain a thing. Not an exclusive thing, absolutely not, but the choice needs to be there.

People that don't have a residence to send a mail in ballot to need to be able to go in person if they can. People in situations with abusive spouses or partners or families need to be able to go in person and be allowed to vote without influence, if they can. People who would feel pressured to vote one way or another, or feel pressured to show their ballot to someone else if doing it at home. People that can't read or write and don't have anyone they know or trust enough to help them with the ballot can get help at the in person places. They can ask questions of the volunteers there to assist. People that are nervous to do it alone can go in person together and make a little event of it. Sometimes the mail gets misplaced or stolen.

There are a lot of reasons that in person voting is a thing and should remain a thing, just not an exclusive thing. I want to receive my ballot in the mail to my house that I own, and spend time with my wonderful spouse looking up the candidates and reading each other their stances on stuff we care about, and I want to drive my car over to the township building at my leisure and pass my completed ballot to a human being so I know it was received. But I also understand not everyone is in that kind of position, and that having more than one option on how to vote is essential actually. Voting should be as easy and accessible to as many people as possible.

Also... You can do all those things op listed while voting in person. You're allowed to sit down at a table and pull out your phone and look stuff up. It's not like an exam that you can't cheat on. You can look at a sample ballot online before you go. You can text your friends and neighbors and ask them their thoughts whether you're at home looking at your real ballot or at home looking at a sample ballot. My experience voting in person and voting by mail is extremely similar because if I plan to vote in person I'm still gonna look at a sample ballot a few days in advance and ask the same questions and do my research and talk to people, and then know what I'm gonna vote for when I go in person. So the difference between whether my trip is to go to the poll and mark a ballot there or to bring my ballot completed at home to the collection, is very minor. You can bring a piece of paper to the poll with you to remember the choices you made if you don't want to store that in your brain; again, it's not a test, you can't cheat.

I get that all these things psychologically become more obvious or something when you have your actual ballot at home with you but please do know that you can do them if you are going to vote in person as well.

I also disagree that the primary reason people oppose mail voting is because it allows people to do their research. People oppose it for the same reason they want shorter open hours for polls and fewer locations. Because that will disproportionally hurt people who work longer hours, people without reliable transportation, and so on. It's not that they want people to vote without doing their research, it's that they don't want people to vote.

Lawyer energy... they train you to do this in law school and it not only makes the tendency worse but makes you overpoweringly good at it the longer you're in the lawyer field. Lawyers all do this for fun with each other all the time but if you apply it to a civilian you have to use caution and deploy a lot of gentle affirmations to keep them in the game.

This is why a lot of lawyers end up affable storytellers among mixed company.
