Bottles App, questions why business focus should be on the youth when they hold very little buying power?
Firstly the youth is addicted to technology
One thing about the youth, is that they don’t stop talking. When I mention talking, I mean communicating. A regular person aged 24, wakes up from an alarm using a digital device. He then goes online to figure out what his timetable registers. He then goes on whatsapp, Instagram, facebook, email etc to connect to whoever. This person then posts whatever (opinion or picture) is on their mind for the world to see. Yes, and it goes on. The youth is simply getting to the stage where they cannot “keep quiet” or go in offline mode anymore. All I can say that the youth market themselves because they are simply “addicted” to a communication method which can accessed in their pockets.
Youth and Buying Power
Well its plain and simple, a youth audience might not have the largest buying power in South Africa but their influence is very large. The youth in our generation record many elements of their daily lives on social media. They use the internet to live their lives. I can tell that many middle aged and old people that use Debonairs, where introduced by a “young tech savvy genius” who is still in their youth. So, the youth might not have the money, but they have greatest influence.
The reason I say that the younger age bracket of the SA should be the focus:
1) You sell a brand-new type of service which is well acquainted to the youth. Bottles APP.
2) Trying to get an older generation to use your service is very much difficult as they first need to understand how to download the app from the app store. This itself is a stage you will need to include if you are to market for an older generation.
You mention disposable income, and I can tell you that it does not mean much. Have a look at:
1. Disney, Playstation, Nintende, Microsoft, Facebook.
2. Also look at the Night clubs in Johannesburg( it is dominated by a younger age bracket)
3. Look at the purchases of Nike, Addidas, Puma brands.
These are all services which generally offer services for young people and their success shows that it’s not only about disposable income.
You talk of disposable income, but Bottles App is not yet at that stage of development. Bottles App should look on ensuring awareness, interest, desire and action. You cannot decide on how you will earn your income if no one is aware that you sell something.
