What is nothing but an ugly wine stain to most of us, becomes art in the hands of Amelia Fais Harnas. She is creating beautiful portraits using wine and a dyeing technique in a modified batik process. It’s a delicate task to try to control the chaos of a wine stain to transform it into a portrait. Harnas enjoys to drink the wine while she paints with it and each time she pulls the layers of wax off of the fabric, she is surprised by what truly has occurred underneath. She likes to believe it is akin to the carefully crafted spontaneity of good watercolors. The major difference is that you shouldn’t drink your watercolors while you’re working.
