Hi
Just wanted to say, from all parts of our mind, thanks for your books.
- Anastacia, Andromeda, and Aurora
You're welcome! :)
im reading through VM after catching up on the current stories, and your author notes keep referencing minor changes to some of the chapters that you planned to post on RR eventually. did that ever actually happen? im pretty sure at least the references to weeks are still there
When I write my chapters, Patreon gets them as soon as I finish and they go through the initial round of editing. Royal Road gets chapters about three months later, and chapters go through a second round of editing from me before I post them there. If there's something about a chapter I don't like, I might add or remove some things during that process, but I could not possibly tell you which chapters have and have not had significant changes as a result. It never changes anything too important, though. I don't make major plot changes via this process.
My apologies if this has been answered before, but Tumblr's search feature is notoriously terrible! Is there anywhere that I can buy your eBooks that is not covered by Amazon's DRM so I can read on my non-kindle devices?
I think that only some of my books have DRM... but unfortunately, there is currently no official way to get the ebooks anywhere other than Amazon. I have a rough time with any aspect of the job other than the actual writing itself so anything like expanding to better platforms simply takes me forever.
If you somehow find an epub via some other method, however, I won't tell anybody.
Just finished reading a book that made me feel like I was taken out back and shot 17 times in the chest before getting sent to the hospital. The entire experience somehow filled me with an incredible level of joy and relief once I walked out of the hospital, alive and incredibly traumatized… in a good way??????
Anyway… thanks Thundamoo for Magical Girl, Mechanical Heart. It fucked me up a lot and the crawl back to being okay again was more enjoyable than I ever imagined.
10/10
Would get murdered by this author and story again
Any time!
Fanart of Anath from the excellent book "Magical Girl Mechanical Heart" by Thundamoo. I drew this about a month ago from the description in the book so I'm somewhat gratified that she's recogniseably the same character as the official artworks I found later.
currently reading magical girl mechanical heart, here is my summary so far
Melpomene is such a fun character to read, she sucks so much.
She cares so much about what is happening to the world but fumbles almost every attempt at trying to do anything about it, and lashes out with petty retaliation at everyone she doesn't like, regardless of how much they're actually trying to help.
woman
Earth Guardian Chibis
Continuing with the Magical Girl Mechanical Heart Chibis I did up all the earth guardians in their early story incarnate forms. No class change variants yet. We've got Aurora, Veritas, Minerva, Fulgora, Castalia, and Amaterasu here in that order.
These are so cute!
Hi, I'm a really big fan! Mechanical heart is a huge inspiration for the project I'm currently working on, down to the fact that my main character is in a similar situation when it comes to autonomy and control as Luna. The simplest explanation is that she is an undead forced to follow the commands of her sire to the best of her ability and understanding, no loopholes, or willful misinterpretation, or resisting, etc.
You can obviously see the similarities, so as someone who's written two + n% books about this kind of thing, do you have any advice about how to do it well?
I would say that, as the author, you need to make sure you have a very firm grasp on the internal world of the person in charge... but the main character does not necessarily have to have that grasp, nor by extension the readers. I think it's a common mistake when making a fic about a character getting enslaved to either make the slaver uncomplicatedly evil or (depending on your purpose for writing, and we all know what website we're on right now) uncomplicatedly sexy. Both are very understandable. In the latter case, you're probably writing smut and that's pretty much the whole point. In the former case, well, if a character is okay with slavery I think it's reasonable to say they're exceptionally, unbearably evil entirely by default. But something can be evil and still compelling. Conflict is key. There should be situations where the main character doesn't want to obey and is forced to, and situations where the main character's goals align with their orders perfectly and they must begrudgingly accept that. This goes for whatever kind of master you choose to write. There should be a part of the reader that doesn't want the main character to be free, because they don't want to stop reading about their monster of a sire. Sometimes, when the master gives a cruel order, you want your audience to be feeling for the main character and lamenting along with them. But sometimes? Sometimes, you want them to grin alongside the master. You want them to laugh when they say "oh, you sick fuck!" out loud to their phone screen. And knowing where to put each of those moments is how you keep ratcheting up tension until you finally get to the point where you want it all to break. Basically? Make a villain that gets your audience to argue in the comment section. Make a character no one wants to look away from and give them all the power. I do this by making Melpomene a car crash in the shape of a woman, but there's a ton of different ways you can make your monster compelling. Pick one, make sure you understand it, and then let them enjoy playing with the protagonist like the bastard they are.
This is awesome advice.
Thank you so much!
Been thinking about this again, and it's got me thinking about how thinking about how I want to flavor Lynns control like in general, like not the mechanics of it but how it is used to fit the personality of her as a villain. Like Lynn is first and foremost a showwoman, everything must be a performance, everything must be entertaining. There is not a thing she does that isn't played up for some amount of dramatic flair. That should extend to how she treats Ene. Her orders shouldn't just be orders, they should be roles to play, improv prompts, side-coaching, narrative twists. She doesn't say 'Ene kill that guy.' She says 'your role is a merciless monster, doesn't that skull look tasty.' To her Ene is the lead of a show she's directing.
Sounds fun! The more the readers enjoy watching that show in spite of how much the main character hates performing in it, the better you're doing!
reading ayeh. met a blossom of wilted chances. i dont think i can fully express how badly i wanna fuck this sharp jellyfish.
Well, good news! She'd probably be down for that. Like, more or less entirely unconditionally vis a vis your personality, preferences, physical form, or current situation.
Also yeah this is the most Tumblr-ass inbox message I've gotten so far.
Do you have a playlist of all the Magical Girl transformation themes in MGMH?
A playlist? No. A regular list? Yeah. A lot of the songs and themes are spoilers or currently Patreon-only, and anything I list in this Tumblr post will inevitably become outdated. I don't really keep an updating list, outside of my personal notes. I think the most recent list as of this post is in the after-chapter author's notes on the Royal Road release of chapter 58? So, here.
When the story is actually complete, I'll post a full, more convenient list somewhere.
i hope you're aware every time i reread bioshifter i am struck by how terrifyingly relatable hannah being trapped in routine no matter how intolerable is
also how much the last ten chapters make me cry every bloody time
Well, thank you for making me aware! Bioshifter is the last story I wrote in what I like to call the 'pre-antidepressant era' of my creative career, and *boy* does it show sometimes... and yet, for all its flaws, I am very proud of it. As much as it is painful, I get a lot of messages like this. Messages from people who tell me the story is something they needed. And that, especially for a work as painful as Bioshifter, is something I've very happy to have supplied.
are you feeling lesss sicky now!? i am much excite for more AYEHs and MGMHs!!!!! your writings have been a massive reason for me to keep going, because they're something i'm always looking forward to!!!!!
I am feeling less sick! I am, unfortunately, still a bit sick. I will do my best to get back to work tomorrow, which would indeed involve writing Magical Girl Mechanical Heart, but oh my god this illness has been trying to kill me for like two weeks now and I probably should have gone to the doctor but those are very expensive and I'm starting to feel better so it'll probably be fine, right? Right. I'll get you those chapters, I promise!!!
I just finished are you even human. Julietta is hands down one of the best narrators I've encountered. This was the first time I've read anything by you, and am so excited to read everything else you've written
Thank you!
