Lena is guarded at first, but sheâs also quick to warm up to anyone who seems to want to be her friend. She tries to hide any sign of vulnerability, always afraid deep down of abandonment or rejection. She easily considers herself friends with someone, but never trusts anyone to stay. Lena hates when people are dishonest with her, so while she keeps things to herself at times, she tries never to lie.
At school, sheâs always been an outcast. When she was young she preferred reading to interacting with her classmates, and she never really learned how to make friends. She hopes that a new school will give her a fresh start.
Backstory:
Born in Ireland, Lena (named Ciara at the time) lost her parents in an accident when she was 2. She has no clear memories of them, and only bits and pieces of the foster homes she lived in over the next two years.
She was adopted at age 4 by the Luthors, a wealthy family who wanted to give their son a playmate and boost their own image. It was her first day with them that Lillian told her they were changing her name to Lena, because she was a Luthor now and she was expected to fit in and live up to the family name.
Lillian in particular always treated her coldly, frequently reminding her that she was only adopted into the family and it was up to her to prove herself a Luthor, even before Lena could understand what that was supposed to mean. Lionel, while showing occasional moments of kindness, was always âbusyâ and never stood up for her. The only one who did was Lex, who was 7 when she was adopted. While Lillian was busy too, she always made time for Lex when he needed it, and when he would get upset over her treatment of Lena, Lillian would leave her be a while. He was the only reason Lena felt welcome in the Luthor family.
Lena was 10 when Lionel died suddenly of a heart attack while she and Lex were at school. The family was devastated, but Lex held them together as best he could. Lillian insisted they not miss school, even the very next day. When Lena expressed fear and reluctance, Lex reassured her, promising he wouldnât be far and she could always count on him.
When Lex was 17, Lena 14, he became involved with a gang. When Lena learned of it, she reached out to him and tried her hardest to convince him to leave. But whether he couldnât out of fear or simply didnât want to, he didnât. He only became more and more involved, and now he didnât have time for his little sister. It wasnât long until he was ignoring her entirely.
It was less than a year later that the crescendo seemed to explode. Lex was 18 when he brought a gun to school. It was a private school and thought to be so safe that they were unprepared for such an event. When classes got out for lunch, he began shooting indiscriminately. There were 7 deaths and even more injuries. He was tried and convicted for first-degree murder.
Nobody looked at Lena the same way again. They wondered if she was like her brother. If she was going to become violent too. Even the teachers were afraid of her. She used to have a couple of friends, but now no one would go near her.
Lillian wasnât faring much better. She didnât care what people thought of her as a person, but the lack of trust was becoming an issue in her occupation. At the end of the school year, she told Lena they were moving to Toronto and she would be going to a school called Degrassi. Lena hopes to make a name for herself outside of her family and to be good, no matter what Luthor legacy she is destroying.
