Throw Away Your Books, Rally in the Streets (Shûji Terayama, 1971)
How regulated are the police in the UK?
So regulated you have no idea.
they can’t carry guns
they might stop them carrying tasers
they have batons so they can hit people who are being violent but they’re only allowed to hit anywhere from the waist down. If they hit anyone anywhere higher, they will lose their job.
If a police officer here is racist in any way, shape or form and is reported and found to be guilty, they will lose their job.
If a police officer is off duty and out with their friends, if they get too drunk and too rowdy or cause ANY kind of trouble, they will lose their job.
Mark Duggan. No justice. Olaseni Lewis. No justice. Jean Charles de Menezes. No justice. Along with countless others.
"Only allowed to hit from the waist down" what the actual fuck

I was at the protest Alfie Meadows (who is white, full disclosure if you don’t click the link, and I’m sure there are more than just a few cases of black people and other poc being violently assaulted by uk cops but I know about this one without having to go looking) was injured at, and I have been kettled by the UK police, and let me tell you: he isn’t the only one who’s been bludgeoned above the waist by cops. There are less shooting deaths by cops in the UK because then UK gun culture is different than the USA’s. Don’t pretend it has anything to do with your cops being somehow superior; cops are dangerous everywhere, racism exists everywhere. You are not exempt.
what an unmitigated pile of shit.
did i imagine the miners strike? the battle of lewisham? the southall riots? the first, second, and third brixton uprising? the battle of wapping? the broadwater farm riot? the poll tax riots? all of these were expressions of resistance against state oppression. many were sparked by the deaths of people of colour in police custody. in all situations, the police behaved abominably. read this list.
147 BAME (black, asian, minority ethinic) people have died in police custody since 1990. 1501 people overall have died in police custody since 1990. no officer has been convicted of causing a death while in custody since 1969. (we could talk about the government-sponsored paramilitary death squads in northern ireland, but we’ve probably got enough to be getting on with already.)
shut up. the police in this country beat people to death on a fairly regular basis. they practice racist stop-and-searches on an hourly basis, every day. it took 19 years to get justice for stephen lawrence. what do you know about the hillsborough disaster? or about how footage in the posession of the police mysteriously disappeared and reappeared after they killed ian tomlinson? i have personally witnessed the police beating minors above the waist. did i imagine that too? regulations are meaningless if the people being regulated do not obey the rules and they face no consequences for breaking them.
fuck the police.
Just to give you some idea of what the ” government-sponsored paramilitary death squads” of Northern Ireland were like, they literally colluded with Loyalist forces to assassinate people
so save me from this ”if they get rowdy they lose their job!!!” bull shit
posting for the comments, obviously.

Honestly, I could take these Nu-Atheists more seriously if they didn’t reduce and trace every war/evil in the world back to Religion. They ignore historical and social context and just cling to the religious justification of one war or another, even though religion has been...

Felix Gonzalez-Torres Untitled (Perfect Lovers) 1991. Clocks, paint on wall.
Untitled (Perfect Lovers) consists of two clocks, which start in synchronisation, and slowly, inevitably fall out of time due to the failure of the batteries and the nature of the mechanism. In a moving comment on his personal experiences, the piece refers to Gonzalez-Torres’ HIV positive partner Ross Laycock, and his slow decline and inevitable death due to AIDS. The clocks act as two mechanical heartbeats; representative of two lives destined to fall out of sync, and holds a poignant poetry about personal loss and the temporal nature of life.
“Don’t be afraid of the clocks, they are our time, time has been so generous to us…We conquered fate by meeting at a certain time in a certain space…we are synchronized, now forever. I love you.”
shout out to people who are scared to call others out, whose hands shake when they try to explain what’s wrong, whose throats threaten to close up with thoughts of ‘what if i’m just overreacting’, whose hearts are pounding out of their chests because they just stuck their necks out for their beliefs, who have lost friends and respect and safety for aligning themselves with causes

Put this everywhere. Show everyone. The protest pictures capture the determination and strength of the people they abuse.
Even if they’re not literally punching a protestor here… THIS picture captures them.
