One great thing about 60s Who, especially Hartnell era is how by the end of each harrowing adventure the characters look suitably fuuucked uuuup. Dirty faces, hair's fucked up, clothes torn...if they've been running through a swamp from a tentacle monster the production really took the time to make it look like they've been running through a swamp from a tentacle monster. Whereas Fifteen manually hurls an ancient Death God into the howling vortex at the center of time and doesn't even break a sweat.

it probably helps that the 60s production team had either fought in wwii, worked in the factories, or at the very least been through the Blitz.

I keep meaning to do a rewatch where I post about the episodes in historical context. Because it's been long enough now that a lot of viewers aren't aware of things like this aired less than 20 years after the end of wwii. all the adults working on it and all the parents watching it remembered the war and the very real threat of being invaded. Rationing had only just ended. They had been clearing up bomb sites just a few years ago.

The beginning music in this movie is SO GOOD

It's such a perfect tone-setter for the rest of the events in the movie. The almost hopeful melody undercut but the solitary, two-note upward piano bit making it have just that perfect amount of lonely, scary dissonance.

And of course the drumbeat adding that required energy to make it an engaging piece between the moments of the introduction (where his isolation is shown/felt) and then cooling down the tone for the scenes afterward

The movie just has a really really good soundtrack overall but this song in particular is so great and iconic and does an excellent job at establishing the tone of the movie and the character
