It was not until Joseph met Sally for the third time that he realised he had finally found someone he couldn’t stand to be with however good the food and the wine and the background music.
His friends always told Joseph he was too tolerant. He never believed them. There’s nothing wrong with seeing the good in people, he would say.
But as the waiter brought the second of the seven courses on the tasting menu, he wished he had more experience of seeing the bad. He could have studied it. He could have prepared for finding someone utterly unbearable.
