Hii, keepblr!! @cogaytes and I have a present for you <3
With the book delays and new people, we want to encourage everyone to interact with each other and support all the wonderful people who make this community what it is!!
There's no strict rules or deadline--just don't be rude to anyone (if you don't like a fanwork, just find another) and have fun!
We do encourage you to keep track of your squares; not just marking them, but writing somewhere what work you interacted with (like: 18. liveblogged petals and ink stains by @cogaytes)
And anyone who completes the D) challenge mode I will personally write you a 1-2k ficlet or draw you a piece of your choice <3
s and i have been consistently unwell about tiergan and prentice’s last night together so here’s a (slightly late) submission for day 4 of @tiertice-week-2025! ugh they’re so important to me
I'm working on a longer tiertice fic but in the meantime, take 400 words of rambling about their almost cognate relationship. Written for day 3 of tiertice week (prompt: jewelry). It's technically on time!
Title is from two flowers (dyed gold 2008) by the Maine because this is THE tiertice album oh my god
There is a ring hidden in a box in Prentice’s drawer. Tiergan finds it months after the mind break, when he finally wills himself to go through his lover’s things. His breath hitches as he slips it onto his finger. It fits perfectly, and he pulls it off in a rush.
He can’t wear it, not with Prentice gone, unable to wear the other half of the set. He is half of a whole now, without Prentice, and the single ring only makes his absence even more achingly clear.
There’s a piece of paper too, neatly folded and tucked beneath the box. Tiergan unfolds it carefully. His chest feels hollow when he recognizes Prentice’s handwriting.
Tiergan,
I know you said you didn’t want to be cognates, and I respect your decision. But I’ve never stopped hoping you might change your mind. Maybe someday I’ll work up the nerve to offer this ring to you again.
Maybe someday you’ll say yes.
Prentice
Tiergan has to sit down. His head is spinning, doubts and regrets and what ifs swirling all around him. If only he’d said yes, when Prentice asked to be his cognate all those years ago. If only Prentice had asked again, if only he’d been less stubborn, he might have changed his mind.
If only Prentice was still here beside him.
“I’m sorry,” he says to the empty room. “I shouldn’t have said no. I trust you and I love you and I wish I’d been brave enough to be your cognate, but I wasn’t ready to be so open with anyone, not even you. And now…”
And now it’s too late, he thinks, but he can’t say it over the sudden lump in his throat.
He can’t bring himself to wear the ring on his finger. He doesn’t think he deserves to, really, not after he had the chance to be Prentice’s cognate and still said no. But he can’t bring himself to let go of the ring either.
(It’s a foolish hope, but maybe someday Prentice will be healed. Maybe they’ll get another chance. Tiergan knows it’s unlikely, but he can’t stop himself from clinging to that possibility.)
Tiergan wears the ring on a necklace, tucked inside his shirt, close to his heart. Even as the months without Prentice turn to years, and the years turn to a decade, he doesn’t stop wearing the ring around his neck. He doesn’t stop loving Prentice. Doesn’t stop wishing things had gone differently.
