A tumblr phenomenon I’m not fond of:
Someone makes an ill-informed or silly (not in the good way) post about something.
Someone else (presumably someone who doesn’t know them) finds the post, maybe through tags or something, reblogs it and rips into the post with what it was wrong about.
Somehow it gets spread around a bunch and people continue to pile on, or just passively support the pile on as some sort of self righteous teachable moment. (They may even be right in their criticism btw.)
This person, a random tumblr user who is not in any sort of position of influence or leadership, has been “made an example of.”
When I see a post like that, I sometimes click on the original poster’s url out of curiosity. Most of the time either they deleted the post or their entire blog. We won’t know the reason, but I always feel like it is because this unfortunate person got totally mobbed.
It makes me sad. I wish there was a better way to have discussions without needing to hound random folks who might mess up a bit sometimes. Especially considering the high amount of young and learning folks on tumblr.
Just a feel I’ve been having.
