Akito and Shigure Sohma Relationship: An Analysis
I’ve been a fan of Fruits Basket for many years. It was not my childhood manga or the manga I followed religiously throughout middle and high school. I read it through, was touched and pleased, then forgot about it. Then I read it again. And again. I always seem to come back to it at my darkest points, like a small ray of light with words of wisdom and inspiration that made me both laugh and cry.
One thing that always piqued my interest more than anything, though, was the dramatic, tension-fraught mess of a love story between Shigure and Akito Sohma. I think Akito’s gender reveal was one of the biggest shocks I’ve ever had in manga– though later it seems more apparent than at first glance.
I’ve read a lot posts and forums trying to delve into their relationship– and the questions are normally the same; Did Shigure sleep with Akito when she was a minor? Was their relationship intimate before Kureno? Etc. The one that stands out to me, however, is why exactly does Shigure love Akito? Akito seems to love Shigure because he was kind to her as a child, charming and indulgent– and later he manipulates her feelings with mind games. But why does a man, seven to eight years a girl’s senior, fall madly in love with a spoiled, destructive girl like Akito?
The manga only openly reveals his feelings after witnessing the dream of Akito; he states that after the dream, he wanted to possess the god of the Zodiac fully. It shows little else of their relationship other than snippets of Akito being a lonely and self-conscious child that Shigure cares for and comforts.
I think it’s imperative, at this point, to look towards others relationships with Akito. Many posts raise the question of why the dream made Shigure love Akito when it did not have the same effect on the others (Hatori, Kureno and Ayame). While first, it is important to point out that all of the characters are differecnt people. Characters like Hatori are drawn to more independent women (namely, Kana and Mayuko) while Ayame is an inherently selfish and self-centered child (he ignores Yuki’s pleas for help as children). That being said, I think it is obvious in the manga that Hatori does love Akito– just not romantically. I always got the vibe that Hatori sees Akito as his little sister. Someone precious and irreplaceable while not above being obnoxious and unlikeable. Hatori refuses to blame Akito for his eye injury and when Akito is upset by Ren’s mockery, he remembers her as a small child and holds her tightly against him in comfort. Meanwhile, Ayame is simply the kind of character who could not be bothered with Akito. As a child and teenager, Ayame does not see the issues and problems of the people around him, he is remarkably self-centered (a trait he eventually begins to grow out of) and does not understand well the needs of others. This also makes Akito dislike him and so a relationship does not form.
One relationship I tend to think people often misread but one that is key to understanding Shigure and Akito, is the relationship between Kureno and Akito. It is often inferred or believed that Kureno was not in love with Akito– I think that is a faulty interpretation of the text. I think that Kureno was, like Shigure, in love with Akito as a child. He found her endearing and wanted to spoil her, though unlike Shigure he is not nearly as possessive or manipulative. He says he couldn’t stand to leave her, that he couldn’t stand to see her weep, so he stays with her after the curse. Not only does he stay, but he absolutely dedicates his life to her in a way no other Zodiac member does. One does not do that without love; though not necessarily a healthy love. Kureno also sleeps with Akito. They have an ongoing, sexual relationship. Mind you, Akito is anyway between five and six years younger than Kureno and seven to eight years younger than Shigure. I sincerely doubt her first sexual experience, as a young girl who has been raised away from feminine ideals, was initiated by her. I also have trouble believing Kureno was her first sexual relationship– Shigure’s view of her cheating indicates that he felt he had the position of her lover before her and Kureno’s relationship began. With Shigure also being known for his promiscuity, it is likely he initiated a sexual relationship with Akito. That being said, Akito uses sex as a way to keep Kureno complacent as her companion. She does not seem to love Kureno the same way she does Shigure but she uses the same weapon to keep both men close; which is sex. That means that if she did in fact sleep with Shigure prior to Kureno, she saw something in Kureno that made her believe sex would work equally effectively on him, and she is right. You don’t see Kureno turning her down. He is sexually attracted to her or they would not be seen making love as frequently as they are. I think that by the time he has his meeting with Uotani, however, that he has fallen out of love with her. He sees the pain it has caused Shigure and he also sees Akito’s discontent with the relationship and he begins to fall for Uo-chan. He tells Tohru that Uo-chan is “the first woman he fell in love with since his curse broke”. Note that he does not say she is the first person he has EVER fallen in love with. Seeing as the Sohma’s are kept away from society for the most part, and knowing what we know of his and Akito’s relationship, it is inferred that the first woman he ever loved was indeed Akito. He, like Shigure, loves her with and without the curse. But Akito’s relationship with him is toxic for Kureno. Shigure can stand up to Akito in a way Kureno’s personality won’t allow, and so he suffers within their relationship.
The reason I’ve branched so deeply into everyone else’s relationship with Akito is to highlight Shigure’s off-page reasons for falling in love with her. Like Hatori and Kureno, Shigure sees the full picture of Akito’s trauma. He knows of the mental abuse Ren has heaped on her daughter since before she was even born. He knows she is hurting and desires affection as she is constantly seen demanding it from the older Zodiacs, “Hug me, Hatori!” and “Do you love me, Shigure?” That, paired with the dream of Akito as god, appeals to Shigure. He wants to spoil her with affection and love but his possessive nature also makes him not want to share her. Hatori might see her as a sister, but a sister can be shared, she can have other siblings. Shigure wants a deeper bond with her and to him, you cannot share a lover. So his affections become romantic and sexualized. He does not, he expresses, want to be her father and he does not want to share her equally with the other Zodiacs. And just when he thinks he has her in the way he desires, she begins her relationship with Kureno, who is unaware of Shigure’s feelings.
I think this act of betrayal arrests Shigure’s love for Akito; his anger and desire for revenge trumps his tenderer feelings for her and that is most of what we see in the manga. He has not stopped loving her so much as he pushes the love he has held and fostered for her for years, away and begins to try and manipulate her whereas before he showed his love through kindness.
What we see towards the end of the manga is not necessarily a change in the two but a reversal. Akito is more how she was as a very small child, not as angry and more truthfully affectionate and Shigure is gentler and more relaxed in the relationship, much like their original dynamic.
So why Shigure loves Akito is much the same as many relationships. He sees her heart, the whole of it– he sees her hurt, her love, her nastiness and her hate and he loves her through it. Their relationship is not a healthy one– though hopefully it can grow to be– but it is not out of nowhere either. Akito is not all bad and most of her childhood is spent being a kind child until her father’s death, her mother’s abuse, and the household’s constant enabling of her destructive and unhealthy coping mechanisms turn her into a mentally unstable bully. It’s not until she hits rock bottom– with the threat of actual repercussions of her behavior and actions– that Akito grows as a person and is able to separate unhealthy behaviors that she and Shigure can form the kind of bond they both desire.
Haha sorry for my long-windedness.
Reposting because this is a great analysis.
More Yuki x Machi Meta
I won’t lie. The thought of Machi being on the screen has me pumped. I recently worked on re-reading some of the manga for yet another analysis. That being said, let’s focus on some parallels and similarities between Yuki and Machi:
1. Less than motherly mothers
Yuki’s mom to Yuki: “So what if you are a tool?” (Chapter 72)
Machi’s mom to Machi: “Are you trying to blame me for this? …. Maybe I made a mistake somewhere in raising you.” (Chapter 102)
We know both have less than stellar relationships with their parents. What’s interesting is how it is the mother who is primarily shown during flashbacks or recollections.
2. Boring
Kyou calls Yuki a “boring stiff” (Chapter 49).
Machi’s mother says she “presents herself as an utter bore” (Chapter 94).
Both were told they were “boring” by the very people they were trying to win their approval. Yuki always wished he could be Kyou and be able to attract people to himself like Kyou does. Machi for years tried to win a pat on the back from her mother, never to achieve it.
3. The feeling for being needed
Yuki in Chapter 86: “I want someone too. Not a person I put up on a pedestal. But someone who’s on my level. Someone I need and needs me back.”
Machi in Chapter 94: “Am I…needed? Is my existence required? Does this world…need me?”
Both were looking for someone who specifically needed them, as they were questioning their place in the world.
4. Invisible
Yuki in Chapter 125: “There were times…when I wondered…how many people…would notice…if I disappeared…in a crowded place like this.”
Machi in Chapter 94: “People always pass me by. And I pass them by. Are they transparent? Am I transparent?”
They see themselves as invisible. Despite Yuki’s title of prince, he often feels left out from the crowd. Likewise, Machi does not have a huge group either, due to her quiet and reserved personality.
5. Just one person noticing
Yuki in Chapter 125: “…I don’t care ‘how many’ people would notice if I disappeared. If just ‘one person’ noticed….that’s all I’d need.”
Machi in Chapter 125: “I think…that’s why you were able to notice…someone like me.”
They were both happy that someone noticed them. It meant the world to them to know that someone was looking for them.
6. Support from that one person
Yuki in Chapter 125: “Having one person…is an incredible thing. I was so happy, it was almost embarrassing. Out of all the people…she found me. Me alone.”
Machi in Chapter 125: “You’ve been there for me, president. You have no idea…how much that means to me…!”
There’s no denying the support of each other helped them grow tremendously. Now Kakeru also helped as well, to varying degrees, but in particular, they needed someone who understood what they were going through and the need for that one special person.
7. Alone looking out
8. The messiness
(Yeah, Mutsuki never had a chance.)
9. Annoying older brothers
10. Kakeru is their punching bag
11. They are referred to by their “colors” when it comes to their relationship
If I find more, I’ll add to this post. But yes, Yuki and Machi all the way.
shigure sleeping with ren: the biggest 'fuck you' moment in fruits basket. there's a lot to say here, and ive had a lot of thoughts about it before, but watching the episode yesterday and the official anime reveal got me thinking and i have some new thoughts about it! i really think there's a lot to shigure's character that's very difficult to see clearly; no one in the show/manga actually understands him fully except MAYBE himself, and he actively frames how people see him with his words and behaviour to keep it that way. but i'm starting to figure him out a little better, i think, and i'd like to talk about shigure's relationship with the curse and how it affects one thing that we know affects every other zodiac but still see differently when it comes to him: his autonomy.
the adult zodiacs--by which i mean shigure, hatori, ayame, and kureno--all seem to have a much more complicated relationship with akito than the kids, who mostly just fear her (without hating her; it's important to consider the curse and how the zodiacs feel compelled to love her despite their fear, and how they can't go against her, at least until their curses break. kyo is a bit of an exception, as he seems able to yell at and touch akito in extreme cases, possibly because he's the cat, possibly because none of kyo's anger is actually directed at other people, just redirected from himself. there's also haru, but by that point the curse is almost broken, and haru still didn't actually hurt akito, despite his anger, and he seemed to almost redirect his anger to frustration with the situation instead). a lot of the differences between akito's relationship with the kids and her relationship with the adults comes from how she treats them or acts around them; probably due to their age, she seems to think she doesn't have as much power over them as she does over the kids. she begs hatori to stay by her side, and treats him like a father figure, she can't stand ayame but just lets him go off on his own without question, she uses every ounce of desperation she has to get kureno to stay by her side, and shigure she seems almost AFRAID of, and it's certainly clear she feels as though she had no power over him. we see her use her femininity, her sex appeal, as a last ditch effort to get him to stay by her side in yesterday's episode, and it works, but it seems like she knows it's temporary and that he'll be leaving again in the morning. i think all of this ties back to akito's insecurities about the curse, how she's not actually convinced that the bond is real and eternal, any more than she is that akira's soul is in that box, and all of that definitely plays into her actions and the choices she makes. and in kureno's case, her insecurities are founded; his curse is in fact broken, and she no longer has any control over him or how he feels. all of this plays into the popular interpretation that shigure is somehow able to sidestep the rules of the curse, through sheer force of will and manipulation. but i don't think that's true.
the story of hatori and kana proves that the adult zodiac members are just as cursed as the younger ones. specifically the part where hatori wasn't angry with akito, how the curse wouldn't let him. it's a very simple thing, but i feel like people (myself included) have forgotten that it applies to shigure as well. shigure CANNOT be angry with akito. he CANNOT act directly against her. he CANNOT yell at her, or fight with her, or hurt her directly. and he has a little zodiac voice in his head telling him constantly that she must be loved above all else. so when akito slept with kureno, shigure was mad and jealous, yes. but not at akito; at kureno. we've seen shigure truly angry, truly hating someone; we saw that in yesterday's episode too, in that phone call with kureno. shigure didn't mince words, he told kureno he hated him and confronted him and attacked him with cutting words and barely contained fury. but that's not what shigure acts or feels towards akito, and it's not why he slept with ren. akito slept with kureno because she was desperate to keep him by her side. she didn't consider how shigure would feel at all when she slept with kureno because she sees the zodiacs as things that exist for her benefit, as brainless followers who would do anything she asked. she still believes this, or at least still says it; she spouts off that rhetoric to shigure in yesterday's episode. i think before akito slept with kureno, shigure had been telling himself that akito might see more in him, that he was her favorite, that she saw him as human, as an equal, even if he suspected that wasn't true ('are you going around asking everyone that?'). akito sleeping with kureno forced shigure to confront the fact that he was just as cursed as the rest of them, and that akito wasn't going to treat him as a human with autonomy. and maybe shigure didn't really know if he WAS a human with autonomy, after that. but he couldnt hate akito for it, couldnt confront her, couldnt argue with her, and couldn't directly hurt her the way she hurt him. and he couldn't make her understand why sleeping with kureno hurt him so much.
ren is akito's mother, and also someone akito hates, and shigure sleeping with her does obviously hurt akito. it's a jab, a big 'fuck you,' and i think shigure knew it would hurt akito. but i don't think hurting her was his goal. because ren is VERY vocally against the curse. she doesn't believe in it, she thinks it's disgusting, she tells akito all the time that the zodiacs will leave her one day and that it isn't true love. and any chance she gets, she pulls a zodiac aside to talk, to seduce them away from akito, to convince them to help her work against the curse. she does this with rin, she tries this with hatori, and i dont think it's a stretch to say she probably did it with shigure too. ren, in some ways, represents the idea that the zodiacs are people with autonomy, with the ability to act on their own. i think a big part of why shigure slept with her was to try and prove to himself that he has his own autonomy, and that he isn't just a brainless toy who exists for akito. and i think another big part of why he did it was because he felt it was the only way he could communicate his pain and his dissatisfaction with how akito treated him (and continues to treat him) to akito. and it didn't work, because sleeping with someone's mom is a pretty shitty thing to do on its own and that's kinda distracting. and we can see that it didn't work--akito continues to rant about how the zodiacs are her things, how she wasn't wrong to sleep with kureno, how she doesn't understand why shigure slept with ren--and we can see how disappointed shigure is that it didn't work. he expected better from her, or at least hoped for it, and he seems to feel stuck, like he can't escape from the current situation, and like nothing is going to change until the curse breaks. i think he gives up a little in yesterday's episode. and then akito kisses him, and he doesnt want to sleep with her because it progresses nothing, it doesn't help their relationship at all; but the curse is telling him to do what she wants, and his own attraction to her is calling his name, and he feels like rebelling is futile at this point, so he gives in.
(disclaimer: i dont know how to feel about akigure at this point!!!! i dont like their ending but i havent decided what i actually want to see from them. definitely leaning away from thinking theyre any good for each other ever lately tho mdhsjdj. but their mess at this point is SO spicy hahaha)
