“I’m not particularly nice, you haven’t caught on to that yet?”
“I prefer to think the best in people. Maybe you’re secretly a helplessly romantic heartthrob who was hurt badly and that’s why you’re such a knob.”
“Aw, but half the fun is that you don’t know what is it. What’s wrong Toots? Ya’ don’t like surprises?”
“There’s a reason I cried at my surprise 13th birthday party. I’m surprised you don’t remember, considering half the school likes to remind me of it on a daily basis.”
“ you are absolutely MENTAL ! “
“ wouldn’t it be MUCH easier to just destroy your beloved with FIRE instead of causing mass panic by BREAKING IN ? “
“i’m not mental, just passionate about flora”
“ easier, but less emotionally harrowing and ultimately terrifying. destroying something someone loves isn’t enough. you combine that love with panic, with paranoia, you get something really special. you get fear.”
“Oh, yeah, you don’t wanna go over THERE — there’s like three couples making out in that corner.”
“Three? Isn’t romance sacred anymore?”
“Can we just get this security threat over with. I prefer not to be stuck in here any longer. Too many Gryffindors in the one place.” Regulus muttered to himself as he sat in one of the corners of the great hall.
“How on earth do you cope at mealtimes?” Tilden piped up from his spot nearby, curious as to how someone who apparently hated Gryffindors dealt with daily life. “Or lessons that Slytherin and Gryffindor share?”
at least the utter ridiculousness of tilden toots makes him feel a bit better, and it even makes him smile a smidgen. “you love more than all that about you, mate?” he nods at the succulents piled about toots, biting the inside of his cheek to keep from laughing at the nonsensical sight before him. “got more room in your heart than i do.”
“i love plenty of things and plenty of people, alas, few of them are here.” tilden anxiously shuffled around the pots in front of him, arranging them into neat rows away from people’s footfall. “my heart has room for a jungle, potter. does this look like a jungle to you? it’s barely a herb garden. practically a rockery”
there’s nothing worse for james potter than inactivity. because now he’s got to sit still, and he’s got to think about what’s going on outside the great hall, and he’s got to imagine what’s happened to that missing kid and wonder how they managed to slip out from under his head-boy notice. “i reckon they’re alright. probably just got a bit lost in the fuss of getting down here. probably some first year who’s barely learned their way around on a normal day, yeah?”
“or they were kidnapped. or maybe they went back to save something they love, as i would have if i wasn’t being unfairly held here against my will.” tilden scowled, glaring at james from his spot surrounded by succulents. he hadn’t saved enough of them. what if someone was destroying the greenhouses right now? “either way i’d still rather be them than me”
“Well, we name our own after Greek myths. Alecto, the fury, or Clytemnestra, the vengeful queen.” Alecto mimicked his tone, knowing even as she did that it was petty of her.
“The fury. Tad more intimidating than fertile valley, I have to say. I don’t think calling a cute little kitty cat like her” Tilden paused to lean down and tickle Clytemnestra between the ears “a vengeful queen, is very accurate.”
“Aren’t you kind – or, incredibly stupid.”
"I’ve heard both. I prefer to think of myself as kind.”
“ your WHAT ? “
“ no, you listen, your little plants are fine ! who in their right mind would break in just to destroy PLANTS ? hmm ? “
“i would! if i had an enemy who i knew cared about their plants as much as i do, i’d bloody well break in to destroy them!”
“maybe that’s their plan. maybe i’ve done something to piss someone important off and they’re going to ruin me, plant by plant.”
ccrrows:
Alecto shrugged and cradled the cat before putting her down. Cly curled around her legs, back arched. “Clytemnestra was intersting at least, better than some boring old star. Besides, stars are the Black tradition.”
“Blacks name their children after actual stars. We Toots name ours after earth and sky. Yvaine, evening star. Tilden, fertile valley. See the difference?” Tilden folded his arms over his chest, smiling slightly at Alecto. “The manure cycle of a Glumbumble is interesting. Doesn’t mean I’m going to rename my owl Dung.”
“ i see you – “ emerald eyes wide & curious.
“ don’t you think you should stop trying to sneak off ? the GREAT HALL is the other way & while i am in support of rebellious actions, i will not be to blame for your unfortunate undoing by the mysterious mass murderer all because you would not listen to orders. “
“listen here, vanity. my babies are out there completely unprotected from i don’t know what, and if you want to stop me from going and saving their poor innocent little lives, you’re going to have to stun me!”
“See. now…”
“I would apologize on Maria’s behalf for trying to eat your pet, but…” Aleksander trailed off as he looked down at the cat in his lap. “It would be a lie. She’s not sorry at all.”
Tilden scowled at Aleksander, hands fussing over the plant pots that had been knocked over during the fight between the cat and his owl. “Rembrandt can take care of herself. You’re lucky she didn’t claw Maria’s eyes out. It’s my plants I’m cross about.”
“What kind of bullshit is this?” Cooped up all day, and now they’re all being shoved into the great hall right before curfew? A night in a room full of people, packed in tight? “How are we supposed to get anything done in this noise?”
“Don’t know, G.” Tilden had found the most secluded corner in the room, hunched between a bundle of sleeping bags and a fireplace. “Don’t really like it either.”
‘ okay , i have tea !! i have tea and i have blankets and i have coffee !! i have pillows and i have books in case anyone wants to read . also gobstones , and exploding snap cards . i also have a list of the things i have and the information that’s been gathered . ’ lily stops short , whipping about to look at the person she’d been talking to ( or at. ) ‘ what am i missing ? am i missing anything ? ’
“me, lily!” tilden ran along the hallway behind her, stack of textbooks teetering in his arm. He’d only stopped for a moment, to check on the greenhouses out of a window, but in that time Lily had somehow managed to get to the other side of the galaxy. “you forgot me. has anyone told you that you walk at the speed of light?”
“Clytemnestra was a Greek queen. A favorite of mine.” Alecto leveled a cool gaze at the Hufflepuff. “Yes whatever, put her down now.”
“Yvaine is Scottish for evening star. Way better than Greece.” Tilden gave the cat a small kiss on the top of her nose, before passing her back to her original owner. “Even if she was a queen, she has a weird name.”
“ … Don’t tell me that was a thinly veiled THREAT, Toots. Because if it was, I’ll burn all your precious plants to nothing.”
“I wasn’t making a threat, but you certainly are. I’ll be sure to warn all my plants to attack if they ever see you coming. Greenhouse three has a particularly vicious Devils Snare, if you’d like to start there.”
