I think I know who the exorcists really are.
Just to be clear, this is a theory and not certain (canon) information or a leak.
Now, we have winners in Heaven and sinners in Hell. We also know that there are Hellborn demons as well as Heavenborn angels like the seraphim and the cherubs. Which are the exorcists though? Heavenborn or winner? Because weâre not told which in the show, but I think I know.
You see Vaggie- sorry, Vaggi, mentions that;
⢠1: She was taught to trust the way comrades in arms do, implying that the exorcists have training sessions, supported by her flashbacks in season 2.
⢠2: Was given her name by Adam, the now deceased leader of the exorcists.
Thatâs all that we know besides a very important detail. That the citizens of Heaven, the winners, arenât told about the exterminations.
Even the Heavenborn angels of Heavenâs court did not know until Sir Pentious was redeemed, Sera was adamant on that, and it doesnât take a genius to know why. The winners all have families and some of the members of their families are in Hell, but that doesnât mean they donât still love them, that they donât think about them, or miss them.
Can you imagine what would happen if they found out?
Because -correct me if Iâm wrong- Vox didnât specify why heâs attacking Heaven when he broadcasted for all the winners to hear, he didnât let them know about the exterminations, and I bet Sir Pentious hasnât mentioned it either, which means itâs still technically a secret, the citizens are still unaware. And if they find out, you bet they will be enraged. Because the exorcists do not go after specific people who definitely deserve to cease to exist -Like Hitler, Harry Truman or a certain guy on a certain island- they kill people at random. The winnersâ loved ones massacred, no questions asked. So, the exorcists must not only be a group separate from the public, but one with if possible -and I think possible- no contact at all.
Now, let us go over the options again, so we have;
1: The exorcists are Heavenborn. I donât think so. Because even though some theorize that the exorcists were created by Sera with the sole purpose of Heaven having an army, there is one issue with that: if the exorcists Heavenborn and if they were not human souls, then they wouldnât have free will, and Vaggi, most likely, wouldnât have been able to let that cannibal kid go.
It is my belief that all Heavenborn angels come to be for a reason. They arenât born, theyâre created for a specific purpose, a duty to carry out and they have will, but itâs limited, they canât act against their purpose.
Thatâs why Sera is obsessed with her duty to keep Heaven safe; she came to be with the duty to oversee all life in Heaven. And Emily was created of the same rank as her (which is why theyâre referred to as sisters the same way Lucifer and Michael were created of the same rank and were referred to as brothers in most religious and demonic texts even though they clearly didnât share parents, and didnât share blood relation) with the duty to âkeep them happy and joyfulâ, said Sera in season 1, but I donât think that quite cuts it.
The way she acts and the way she simply is shows that Emily has immense faith in humanity, she doesnât even question if itâs possible when Charlie says it is -with no solid proof besides Angelâs actions- it has to be! And doesnât that remind you of someone? Doesnât that sound exactly like the old, pre-fall Lucifer? He had such unrelenting faith in them that he never thought they could do anything bad, much less evil with it, and that duty had to have been given to Emily, now that he couldnât be in Heaven.
She doesnât act the way someone centuries old would, thatâs correct, but she doesnât have to be. We all thought exterminations had been going on for thousands of years and it turns out itâs only been seven years! Just seven. And sheâs also clearly an adult but Sera dotes on her like a mother, so sheâs clearly far younger.
Most likely, or at least it is my belief that she came to be sometime before the exterminations officially began, but after Adam first suggested it. And if she knew from the start sheâd do everything to prevent it, maybe even let it be known to the public, which couldâve gotten her to fall, but she didnât know, and now, the exterminations are officially cancelled.
And also, if the exorcists are all Heavenborn, then why are they from different ethnic backgrounds that we can see in Vaggiâs flashback in season 2? And how can Vaggi even speak Spanish, why would they be taught any language besides English, what would be the point?
So, knowing -or believing- all this, it is my belief that the exorcists are not Heavenborn.
2: The Exorcists are human souls; winners. This is problematic. Because when I first pondered at the possibility, I thought that the only way this works, the only way every single one of those exorcists would be okay with killing sinners -potentially their own families- at random would be if they arenât aware that theyâre killing their kin. And that wouldnât make sense if theyâre aware they arenât Heavenborn, so how could they not know? But then I thought of a second way how. They also wouldnât have any objections if they had no reason to give a damn.
Notice the only kids we ever see in Hell are the cannibal kids? And in appearance, they stay the age they died -seems to be around 9-10 at the earliest- because we know from Vivzie talking about lore -again, correct me if I'm wrong- that they all died sometime around 1920s to 1930s during a food outage in their community. They donât grow up physically after death, and we see all kinds of people from all ages in Hell, but notice in Heaven -even though the screen time is much more limited- we never saw any kids? When they should be in abundance?
Logic and common sense would dictate that sin is an adult thing, the number of kids going to Heaven should far surpass the number of adults going there, and yet, we didnât see any kids, and I know why!
The kids in Heaven must be able to grow into adults -and we can explain the kids in Hell staying the same as it just being a part of their -not- eternal punishment- and if they do, theyâd just become adults and then stay that way for eternity. But that came to a stop when Sera okayed the exterminations. They needed an army, and they had babies by the hundreds dying every day, so, why not raise them to be the soldiers!?
That would explain why Adam gave them their names, and why they had no problem killing other humans randomly, they were raised that way. They were told from a very young age -probably selected at five years old at most- that the sinners deserved to die, and as long as they kept Heaven safe, all was well, and why would they question the word of a fucking angel? Working for the lady in charge of all of Heaven?
That would even explain why their designs are so plain. Humans after they die carry traits from their personalities and how they died into their looks in the afterlife, but if one died before they could develop a personality at all, then aside from ethnicity, they would all be the same. And what seems to be the only difference the exorcists have from each other? Ethnicity!
And preparing an army like that would take years -during which was spent with discussions and negotiations with Hell most likely. Enough time to wage a distance between Lilith and Lucifer that damaged their marriage and resulted in Lilith leaving.
Not to mention during that time Lucifer convinced Heaven to not come after the Hellborn- so if we assume it took, letâs say 10 years. You have kids you choose from 5 and down to new born that you train for ten years then they spend the next 7 years exterminating the sinners. Then that means no kid below the age of 5 was in contact with the public -besides Lute but thatâs due to her position and close bond with Adam- for 17 years, meaning the youngest person in public in Heaven right now would be 22! Thus why we didnât see any kids.
And Iâm aware that this theory is not air-tight. It wouldnât explain why there arenât any male kids in Heaven, since the exorcists are all female, but I do think itâs worth exploring.
