Why does this ad look so awfully and terribly photoshopped together?
Because Annie Leibovitz. There’s nothing about this picture that screams photoshop, it’s just lit better than real life. Annie Leibovitz is an artist not a documentarian.
There’s nothing wrong with being an artist, making composite images, or creating things digitally. However, it doesn’t look “better than real life”, It looks like somebody rushed in photoshop.
I’d be interested as to what you feel is rushed. The industry works on deadlines, but Annie is a star and gets top treatment/privileges/money/assistants/retouchers. It was definitely lit on location shot with the posing in this way. The only thing annie leibovitz does on a regular basis that maybe some people don’t agree with is swapping people/even bodyparts from picture to picture. I think it looks as realistic as her contemporary work gets though, and the lighting is very nice on Ali.
I’m no Annie, I’ll never be, and will never pretend to be… and I’m not saying anything as though I “know better”… I’m merely speaking my opinion.
Ali’s head looks like it’s from a different picture, it’s very oversized in comparison to his body.
The head itself also looks extremely flat and chopped in. There’s some funny business going on with his arms, and his foot/gransons foot.
It just looks like crap IMO for what it could/should be.
This single ad is not the pinnacle of her career. And photography isn’t about a single standout image, it’s about consistency in quality and style, as every commercial art. I think for what it is it’s very good. Maybe you have forgotten that Ali has parkinsons. I can’t imagine shooting someone with parkinsons and creating something that looks as casual-normal as this.
Of course this isn’t the pinnacle of her career, which is why I didn’t say she sucks. I said this image is bad. Simple as that. There’s no over-analyzation going on here. It’s a nice image. It just has some stuff that looks bad to me. And I don’t think parkinsons has much to do with this.
I think a photographer's biggest challenge is always making people look good. You really cannot deny she did a great job considering his condition. Link is Ali at opening day for the Miami Marlins.
