this little bit with him running on the walls and leaping over the water is really well animated, but i was struck by how unique of a fight and ability this is. like fukuro doesn't have to really attack him that much here, he can just knock him into the water repeatedly. using the environment and not having to actually fight as much is a really cool ability.

he's literally using him like a balloon lmao. interesting that the moon walk ability seems to be useable per foot, not needing both to fly. so two just makes the jump stronger.

episode 288: Fukurou's Miscalculation! My Cola Is the Water of Life!

i love steroids chopper!

the infinite monkey theory, but with luffy. an infinite amount of luffys will throw themselves into the sea.

she's not wrong though lmao! great gag.

second and third gear in the same arc??? holy shit dude is leveling up fast. this was such a good tease, looks like he gets bigger so maybe he can match lucci's strength and size. maybe he inflates himself like a balloon?

this is so fucking funny i never expected this. does he... stay small as part of the attack or is this... the refractory period?

lucci is such a smug asshole, like i don't know if he's doing it just to piss off spandam or he just think he's that strong that he can take whoever, or both... but spandam is right for once. lucci's pride will be his undoing.

"anyone" i wonder if that means other cp9 members? like will there be some sorta moment where lucci kills someone spandam doesn't want him to?

all this man does is slap a helpless woman. spandam haters for life.

ok so his body is in chibi form for a few minutes after third gear, which means it has to be his kinda trump card so he can win without getting his ass beat afterwards when he's helpless.

really cool quick shot here with some great animation, lots of good impact frames and excelllent followthrough/ recoil from each hit taken and received.

i feel bad for chopper sometimes because it feels like that rumble ball is a necessary evil but he's much weaker without it, feels like. like he's super strong, but the ball is his main level of strength and without it he's just normal strong.

wtf lol? this is so random. and awkward because its the one place franky needs to be. this should be fun as they try to figure this out.

honestly as much as i adore franky, chopper is valid for this.

this is actually a really interesting power/ drawback. like yeah the cola are his super powered batteries, but without em he has nothing. love that, there's some actual risk/ reward here.

this is so fucking funny to me because 1. he is laying down like he immediately gave up, it's been two minutes, and 2, his way of talking and taking forever just ends with him not even finishing his sentence. i absolutely adore this joke because it's so stupid and brilliant.

this is so funny to me because i can't help but read this as "giraffes are cool and always have been SHUT UP" as though kaku is kinda trying to psych himself up.

oh. of course. that should... make the fight interesting. i imagine usopp will be extremely helpful in a battle where mobility and dodging will be extremely important. interesting handicap.

i do like that they keep harping on this. definitely will be their undoing.

though i suppose everything happens for a reason, and this is as good as any to get pertinent plot points outta these guys.

this isn't right, but it... also isn't wrong...

i have never less believed any statement by any character in this whole show so far.

i really REALLY hope this is what allows sanji to fight back, even though she's a woman, but somehow i think the title of the episode may have implanted other thoughts into my head.

unfortunately, expected and deserved. i had a sinking feeling it would be this way.

kumadori is like the most interesting member of cp9 but also the most boring, if that makes sense? he feels like a joke character that doesn't... do anything?

have a feeling this will 100% work. 2. she looks so happy and cute here! she really is at her best when she's lyin' and cheatin'! 3. he really is annoying lmao

i genuinely think this might be the happiest we've seen kalifa so far.

actually like this matchup because they're both kinda no bullshit just super strong dudes. and we're here for it.

yes his swords CAN deflect anything and i am HERE FOR IT!

i love that franky is concerend about them!!! they're just regular people caught up in this crazy scheme.

all things considered that's a good trade lmao

all of them doing the same pose is so funny, esp for characters like sanji and nami who this is a bit out of character for.

i like to think of him as a kid who just likes to talk because he likes the sound of his own voice, inadvertently dropping extremely sensitive information. maybe he should work in the us government. boom roasted.

this is actually a really interesting way to make sure they have to fight all the cp9 members, instead of just getting the key and bolting.

his little singsong dancing jump is cute here. i do find it interesting that, once again, cp9 is just... allowing the straw hats a chance of victory instead of destroying the keys for good. i know it's a manga, but still interesting.

this is so funny, and i love the way zoro is drawn here, like a rabid animal.

so they're gonna have to split up again. i never really love it when they do that, because it always creates problems, but i can see why they have to do it from a story perspective. would love to see more team-up battles.

episode 283: Everything Is for Her Friends! Robin in the Darkness!

this episode is kinda weird? like, they're doing a flashback of something that just happened? these past few eps of filler have unfortantely leaned more bad than good, but it could be worse i guess? i just hope these kinda heavy repeated character specific flashbacks that murder the pacing don't become the standard.

ugh tom. he was such a great character, really had an impact on me.

more of this, less of luffy stuck between two fucking buildings please.

episode 282: Parting Builds a Man's Character! Sanji and Chopper!

i still fucking love this moment with zeff but god another thing i notice is just the detail here. the wear and age on his face and clothes is immaculate for this shot. it just says SO MUCH with so little.

UGH this scene again with the music and the dreams and the crying makes me cry too!!!

still think this is one of the coolest takedowns in the show so far.

i still love this scene and i just realized it's one of the few times we see sanji cry.

chopper's backstory and his relationship with hiriluk and doctorine is my favorite of the backstories personally because it's so damn emotional hopeful. i love it so much. i remember this arc was one of the first times i ugly cried when watching the show.

i love this scene too, and i also want to point out how much i love that the straw hats reclaimed the word "monster", making it something unique and powerful instead of a hateful insult.

episode 281: A Bond of Friendship Woven by Tears! Nami's World Map!

before i start, as of today, may 27, 2026, this blog is one year old! i would have liked to do one post a day, but life often gets in the way. let's keep going until we finish the whole damn show!

i've always loved nami and nojiko's relationship. feels like a lot of the time, she is the only one who "sees" nami.

i forgot how massive arlong is. he's a giant here.

GENZO MY KING. GOAT OF THE ARC!!!

this is of course one of the best scenes in the show so far, and one of the first times we see a truly pissed off luffy. but one thing i noticed here is in the 4th image, we see a quick moment of him crouching down before he screams. he literally like pumps himself up and puts his whole ass body into that roar. love it, cool detail i missed last time.

this moment also graces us with one of the hardest panels in the show. ugh the AURA.

legit one of the qualities about zoro that i like/ envy the most. he has zero regrets and just lives with everything.

wow original usopp looks like an almost entirely different person. the eyebrows, more realistic nose, the low low ears, and even the mouth really just change his entire visual identity.

i was today years old when i learned that the iconic Kazuki Yao voices not only FRANKY and bon clay but also Jango! i was in love with his voice from the very beginning!

even the merry looks so much... smaller. like they look normal sized on it, it feels so much bigger lately... idk maybe im crazy, or its just this one specific shot.

oh so this is FILLER filler. alright.

episode 279: Jump Towards the Falls! Luffy's Feelings!

this is really cool! they go a new cover of the original OP. love to see it. also crazy to see how much the art direction of the show has changed. not just the faces, but the line work, even the lighting and shadows. also interesting is the aspect ratio, which is 4:3, making it more square. the one piece text on the side is admittedly a little distracting, but still cool.

actually smart of them to bomb their own bridge.

incredible. insane. i love that you can IMMEDIATELY tell what luffy is thinking and what is about to happen.

this is cool, i guess! flashbacks as they hurtle to their deaths is a neat idea. kinda... kills the pacing of this extremely intense arc after one of the most important moments in the whole show so far, so....

maybe i never realized this before, but that's yassop, usoppo's dad!

i forgot how effortlessly funny shanks is man. even knowing what happens this is just seriously funny, i always love when a serious situation is played 10000% not seriously.

these eps seem to be filler or something? don't love it, and taking a peek at the next episode's title, looks like it's gonna be the whole crew, which should last a few more eps. should be a fun trip down memory lane if nothing else.

episode 278: Say You Want to Live! We Are Your Friends!

oh my fucking god they are actually trying to nuke a child.

i find this younger rougher version of aokiji much more intimidating even though he is probably less powerful than present day.

DON'T LIKE HIM, but this is a good line, very real.

i fucking GASPED when the evacuation ship was blown up. FUCK THIS GUY AND FUCK THE WORLD GOVERNMENT.

i hate HATE HATE this but i do find an element of beauty in the juxtaposition of the fire versus the ice here.

another fucking all time banger of a quote. fuck yeah saul. fuck yeah.

the fact that he died trying to help robin and taught her to laugh even in this moment of great pain is fucking heartbreaking GOD DAMN YOU ODA FOR MAKING ME CRY EVEN MORE

wow i did not expect this. esp from aokiji. this is such a truly compassionate thing but i think he knows the world government is wrong here and is just trying to live with himself. this moment is really fucking sad but also adds another layer as to why robin was so paralyzed with fear when he first appeared to the group.

this scene is an emotional gut punch. hate it. her trying to laugh through the fiery flames just kills me inside.

that woman looks insane. something about her face. absolutely hated the little betrayal montage there.

i love that she still finds it in herself to be able to laugh in times like this. what a strong brave little girl.

genuinely the fact that crocodile seemed willing to help her and not immediately turn her in is probably a big reason as to why she worked with him for so long.

she has every right to feel this way, especially after her insane backstory is revealed. her whole life has been one of fear. it has been her driving force for so long.

this is another top tier moment for me. this moment. this big middle finger to the world government. this absolutely clear and giant sign that they will stop at nothing to rescue robin. this is it. this is what the show is all about. damn the rules, we make our own. fuck the world to save your friends.

this is it. this is THE MOMENT of this arc. incredible. no notes. i am screaming and crying and sobbing and this is so beautiful what a little man in a straw hat can do, bring hope to the dark and dreary world. i watch the show subbed, but i specifically changed to english VA just to hear it stephanie young's version of this line. amazing, i am actually crying. just everything comes to a head here and it is just... such raw sadness given form. hands down one of my favorite moments in the whole damn show.

episode 277: The Tragedy of Ohara! the Terror of the Buster Call!

i really like how alien and foriegn the stones are. they just feel out of place and odd. really adds to the mystery.

i find this point especially fascinating. the idea that the ancients were clearly wiped out by something or someone so wholly that an entire period of time was lost is such an interesting idea. like yeah they wanted thier history to be saved, but if they were doing so because they feared mass extinction? riveting stuff, really cool plot points here.

holy shit. this is insane. makes sense. but then why wouldnt the government just fund a buncha research and take everything over instead of eliminating everyone?

fuck the marine. god damn dude.

i admire their bravery. even when faced with certain death, they STILL are trying to save what little knowledge they can. the people of ohara deserved to keep their lives. FUCK THE MARINE

so her mom must be super important!!!! like we knew she was important but this is HUGE. but again, why not kidnap everyone else at least???

ah. fuck. ah, fuck.

i hate this. like i knew robin's backstory was insanely sad, but it somehow gets EVEN SADDER AND MORE DEPRESSING with each passing episode. i cannot get over how fucked up and traumatic this is. having her people die in front of her? watching her own mother get attacked, and then not being able to be with her in her final moments? ugh my heart breaks for this poor girl.

the juries are interesting because they're really more dressed like executioners, which is the point, subtle as it is. but them using their chainballs in tandem here, using one to stop another, is an interesting tactic too.

one of the things i kinda love about one piece specifically is that the world is so weird there's just a lotta weird stuff that happens and it all just kinda... works. like no explanation you're immediately just like "yeah that tracks"

from the moment we saw the extra clean lines in blueno's face, I KNEW this moment was gonna be hype as fuck, and the animation is CLEAN. but this moment where blueno brushes away the smoke is like animation porn, it's sooooo smooth. i watched it like three times because it just flows like water so well.

more PEAK animation, clearly this was THE BUDGET EP cuz god damn this shit is hype. and grabbing onto his HAIR with the missile is JUICY ugh this fight beatdown is so damn GOOD!

this really is a versatile devil fruit power, makes it very interesting from a tactical perspective.
