we do suppose x marks the spot. it isn’t the best indication when someone runs out into the street because that gives diosa the impression that the person is hiding from something or someone. more so when the person dips behind her back. sometimes, more or less that means she has to slip out of one guise and into the other, intervening. di spins to the face the other with a full movement of the mouth that is neither a smile or a snarl. it’s a bastard. “ no one’s tryin’ to kill you, right? that’s so not on my agenda today. “ as in, it’s sometimes on the agenda: watching someone get killed.

she runs out into the street, looking around. she chooses the person with the most neutral looking face and decides to go right there, hiding behind their back. “ can i just -- stay here. for a second. “

She snorts through her nose. “Oh, sugar, did you ever pick the wrong person to ask. I can ballpark the year, if you like.”
“ oh. oh no. “ she rests her hands on the woman’s shoulders, leaning forward. in a hushed whisper, “ are you from the future too? “

“oh – wow, georgie. hey.” it’s been a while since she’s seen her. months, in fact. she’s surprised to see her. worried right after. (maybe she should’ve called her. or – checked in somehow. but she realizes she doesn’t have a number, or an address, or any of it. it clogs her throat with a moment’s worth of guilt.)
“me and – me and roman?” you and him got serious. everyone seems to think so, and it’s strange to her, because she and roman have always been serious, or at least she’s thought so. it stings, in a way, that so many people seem to question them together. “– uh, yeah. i mean, we were before. but we’re – married now, so.”
“ -------- married? “ she puts a hand to her heart. “ i missed the wedding. i’m a terrible friend. “ realistically, she could figure out when the wedding was and show up then. but there might not have been a seat for her, or she would have been in the awkward table in the back of the people that were up in the air about showing up. “ congratulations, though! i’m happy for you. “

“Ssh. Stop fussing. I’m just braiding your hair.”

“Would it be all right if I borrowed your sweater? It smells like you.”
“I might have slept with your robe when you were gone.”
“If you steal the blankets, I am going to put my cold feet on you.”
“Here, let’s share the blanket.”
“You’re comfy.”
“You are my new pillow.”
“You are very endearing when you are half-asleep.”
“But I want to hear you sing.”
“We can talk over dinner.”
“Don’t be stubborn. Try it!”
“Don’t get up - I’ll do it.”
“Will you let me rub your back?”
“Care to give me a back scratch?”
“Star-gazing was a good idea.”
“You look beautiful/handsome in the moonlight.”
“I’ll always be here for you.”
“I’ll be here to protect you.”
“I think I love you.”

“How about something warm? It will will help you sleep.”
“It’s okay. I couldn’t sleep anyway.”

A few were inspired by these.
she’s here alone, like she always is; getting into the building was easy enough, and avoiding the lone security guard who made his last round a half-hour ago was simpler than it likely should’ve been, too. she brushes it off as good luck, a swell night. look at her go!
camera out, penlight tucked between her neck and shoulder, she walks slowly, narrates the history of the building in all its gruesome Discovery Channel glory. she’s getting to the good part, the really juicy details, when –
she hears footsteps. footsteps that don’t seem to belong to anyone.
whispering to herself,
“Holyshitholyshitholyshitholyshit –”
she fumbles in her pocket, searches for her voice recorder, hopes maybe she can catch something else, too.
“Holyshitholyshitholy – – hel–”
someone shrieks and it isn’t her, and it doesn’t sound like a ghost unless that ghost has a penchant for pocket knives, and scout can’t help it: she screams, too.
“No, no, no, no! No need for that! C’mon!”
she flicks on the light attached to her headlamp and sees a girl, not a ghost, standing in the pool of light it throws.
“It’s fine! It’s fine!”
back to the wall, she holds the first tool from her bag up as a weapon; the least dangerous thing. a level. well -- if this person was threatening, then she could maybe swing it around hard enough to knock them out.
but their is a shriek similar to hers, and the ‘weapon’ clatters uselessly to the ground. great, that was a good tool, and now she will probably never find it in this strange decrepit place.
“Oh -- oh. Oh.”
she pulls herself from the wall, squints at the flashlight and -- whatever else was happening -- georgie moves to cling onto this person instead. not bothering to preface or introduce, she asks,
“I’m afraid of the dark.”

wherever she is now, it’s dark. there’s steps, from somewhere far away, and fear creeps up the back of her neck and makes the hair stand up. she doesn’t like the dark so much, unless she knows where she is, and knows there’s nothing scary. nothing scary at all --
rounding a corner, fumbling, she sees a light. hears a voice. she lets out a shriek and starts flailing her arms.
“ -- I have a knife!”
no she doesn’t. a wrench, sure, but not a knife.
