"I've always been somewhat terrified of the ocean. Over the years I've forced myself to swim in even the dark waves of the northern Atlantic, and I love it, but all the while I am anticipating violent death. There is some sort of neurotic past-life link that hints at a tandem of sentimental familiarity and fear. When I look at Ernst's photograph, my mind moves from the thought of sweet solitude, social oblivion, contemplative escape, the remarkable feeling of being a silent observer of landscapes so profound and foreign, to an asphyxiating sense of doom. So though compositionally there is an immediate link between the two photographs, even the textural focus of the bottom portion of the images nodding to the other, I love the impression of the figure (me) running toward the sea, the abstracted horizon distracting me from that deep rushing well below that dwarfed vessel."

"Tamara's photo observes a society but doesn't take a part both by the point of view and the grainy and abstract look. I tried to keep that estranged chain by adding a photo depicting a similar principle; my shot shows a display of trophys.

Trophys are like little relicts of people, memorials of their outstanding deeds. Also, the view of the display from it's back, through the blurry glass, makes it less achieveable to see those people "behind the trophys." I've always liked such a distant perspective. It's one of the main aspects of my photography I think." Barbora Mrackova
