Y’all ever think about how there are so many fanfics out there that just don’t get published. There are funny interactions we’ll never get to laugh at, or cute scenarios and AU’s we’ll never get to read. There are probably so many golden fics that’ll never see the light of day.
And then there’s the flipside where a writer will have a fic they never finish and it just sits there with all those cute moments and funny lines that’ll never be seen by people cuz you don’t wanna publish an unfinished piece but you also can’t bring yourself to finish it.
I am in pain
So, unsolicited advice from a rando here, but
Just post stuff.
Like, even if it’s not done. Even if you really think you may never finish it. Just post it.
I have this tendency to believe that if I like an idea a lot and I feel like it’s something I would want to see more of, I can literally just put that idea out into the world where someone else might see it and go ‘Oh, I can DO something with that!’
And that’s kind of the beauty of telling stories to each other, right? It’s collaborative. Sure, maybe no one will expand on the idea you put out there, that’s life. But maybe someone will lay in bed at night and find themselves weaving stories together in their mind because of something you wrote. And even if that person never puts pen to paper either, you still gifted someone with something, right?
That’s still valuable.
I genuinely believe that story telling is a collaborative effort and sharing ideas is one aspect of that collaboration.
And on a more personal level, sometimes posting things is a way of letting things go. Rather than have that fic hanging over your head, stifling your other projects, or just bogging you down and making it hard for you to write, maybe it’s better in the long run to part with it. This is the world of fanfic, and if you ever change your mind, you can always go back.
