Technically speaking, the world of Witch Hat Atelier isn't entirely fleshed out yet, so I'm gonna assume that we will get answers to these questions eventually, but I still can't stop myself from wondering: what exactly do the three sages even do?
I've got a couple of assumptions, listed in order of how sure I am:
Vinanna is both the wise of principles and the captain of the knights (which I do wonder if the duties of the position is interchangeable, and wether the wise of principles is always required to be the captain). Principles implies the handling of the law, which I don't have a single clue how the law works for the witches because as far as I know there isn't any law other then the ones that deal with magic. Like do they not have human rights laws??? They also don't have a judicial system, which implies that the management of the pact is kinda up to the discretion of the people protecting it. Like, has the average witch even read the pact? What does the pact even say?
Moving on, Lagrah is the wise of friendship, and I'm just gonna complicate it and say it's international relations. He's the witches PR manager. Although, during the Silver eve arc it said that he only recently became a sage, which begs the question of how? What qualifies a witch for the position of a sage? Does the sage before then choose a successor? We also saw the old Sage be removed, so how does that work. Do two other sages come together to decide to remove a sage? Could that not cause an abuse of power?
Continuing, Beldaruit is just the board of education, I'm assuming. But also like, what does that mean??? He manages the students and teacher, which would mean he has to also have people working under him to help with that. And considering how many problems seem to exist between the student and teacher dynamics, I'm starting to think he's not doing his job. Then again, what even is his job???
This might just be because I personally enjoy the world building of stories a lot, and that's why I'm thinking too hard about it, but also like WHA still has a long way to go, so I hope I get tons more about the tiny details. My overall consensus is that witches love to abuse power. I also need in the future to be told how a Sage is chosen because WHA's magic system isn't exactly something that can be power scaled, so you can't really say that the these three are the strongest. All in all, I'm super curious about whatever the sages deal is.
If you made it this far, share your thoughts. I need the void to echo back to me pls
Maybe the 9-5 grind has done something to my psych cause why am I so pressed about the Three Wise Ones not having a job description
it’s june I desperately need to stop wasting time

Hi!! I saw your comments on my witch hat atelier post and that's insane they don't have a judicial system?? 😭
The fact that a counter clock spell contraption can cause easthies to spiral that bad...like what happened to him???
Anyway I hope you have a good day/night!!
Hello! Thanks for sending me an ask!
For the record, the “there is no judicial system” comes from a tweet by Shirahama-sensei on the live commentary of Ep 8. This one:
In general, they seem to value in-the-moment punishment more than they do long-term consequences. They also don’t seem to care much for how their punishments affect the ones punished. (Funny that they’re allowed to erase memories, but not restore them. What happens if they erase the memories of an innocent person?)
And yeah, the end of ch 78 (well, the chapter in its entirety but we’re focusing on the crashout here) to chapter 80 was genuinely wild. I’m not the first or best person to have made Easthies backstory theories, but since I have you here, I think I’d like to draw your attention to something I noticed in the chapter:
Easthies didn’t come in with the intention of erasing memories. He was using the standard white pennants when going after Vinanna and crashing into the wall, and here:
He declares no intention to erase anyone’s memories, only to destroy the counterclock and anything else Vinanna may have approved in violation of the pact.
It’s only after he listens to Coco advocating for doing the right thing over following the rules, that he activates the Sinsinger’s Talons and declares his intention to erase memories.
Chapter 97 spoilers:
.
.
.
(considering Vinanna saying that she would have erased their memories herself, in normal conditions at least, this puts everything in a different perspective)
Anyway, finishing this off:
In his response to Coco, Easthies says he should’ve acted without fear of reproach. If he were to be reproached in that situation, it would be because he’d have gone overboard. The punishment wouldn’t fit the crime.
Y’know what would render that fear completely unnecessary? That’s right, a judicial system!
(it’s almost 2am at the time of writing, but again, thank you for the ask, and for giving me the chance to rant!)
WTF DO YOU MEAN THEY DONT HAVE A JUDICIAL SYSTEM.
I mean yea, makes sense considering the choices made by the knights.
ALSO, as far as I can tell, Vinanna only seems to have the responsibilities of a caption. WTF does she do as the wise of principles tf
