Ceres Victorinus (OC) // Sixth Year Gryffindor // Keeper Of The Peace

[Sixth-year Gryffindor prefect and transfer from France who is the prefect partner to Philippe Bernadotte. A half-English, half-French witch whose mother was a muggleborn witch, her family is one of those that are old (notice the old Roman name) but has always been content with where they are. As they are not avid social climbers, they’ve never cared much for the opinions of the Ton (hence why they’re rather relaxed on marrying ‘out’ to muggleborns and the like). It may have something to do with how they’re a traditionally more martial family. Her ancestors were in the wizarding army when the French wizards still had an army, and then since the Aurors were established, they entered the Auror force. It's probably why she and Pip already knew each other even before Beauxbatons—their families moved in more or less the same, less-rarefied circles. ]

Philippe Bernadotte (OC) // Sixth Year Gryffindor// Overseer of Chaos

French with some Swedish descent (still in contact with his Swede cousins). He’s not entirely sold in the value of an education when his family had always been Hit wizards (and, well, mercenaries, not that it’s something to mention in polite company), and more recently, Aurors. It made his current presence in Hogwarts chafe even more when most of his relatives were back home defending la patrie.

Unlike de Breteuil, his family was never that high in the nobility (they were mercenaries at first, after all) to even hold the whole thing about main branches and cadet branches. So, it didn't even matter to them even if he was the oldest male child of the oldest line. He is generally friends with the rest of the French wizards and witches (he’s a guy who makes friends easily), but his oldest friend is Ceres Victorinus.

'Philippe' is from the Greek name Φιλιππος (Philippos) which means "friend of horses". It's a name that has gotten around through the centuries that most people named Philippe is usually from someone else named Philippe instead of the name being a wish that the child would grow up and be a great cavalry officer/horse rider. Several kings of France have had this name, as well as the kings of Macedon (this includes the father of Alexander the Great)."

A bit of a prologue, this topic is asked by a good reader on Wattpad. Honestly we (the author and I) really don't know that Hogwarts don't have any tuition (based on Rowling's answers on twitter), we never really thought about is as a possibility. After some brainstorming session, this is the explanation from our author if we look at it carefully from the worldbuilding angle.

Hogwarts Tuition

The first thing that needs to be pointed out is that, the wizarding world still has currency. It still has money. This means that it is definitely not a post-scarcity economy like in Star Trek, where they have a mechanism (somehow) for allocating the resources across society based on need (basic thing like housing, food, education, healthcare, etc) and contribution to the economy (work, what usually gets wages).

You want to eat at a restaurant, you have to pay. You want to go on the Knight Bus, you have to pay. This is straightforward enough.

This in turn implies that you can't just magic food out of thin air. Otherwise, why have house elfs in the first place? Why do people still cook? So, some things still has to be produced the traditional way. It also implies you can't magic clothes or fabric out of thin air either. There are still clothes shops.

Now that we've gotten that out of the way, the running of a boarding schools incurs a multitude of expenses. Food. Paying for the professors. Paying for inventory such as potions ingredients. All these add up.

If, we state that students don't have to pay tuition, all those costs needed to run a school don't just disappear. The question becomes, who pays for it, then? Would the Ministry of Magic burden their budget with it when it's clear that any child from a pureblood/old family has parents that can easily pay for their tuition, along with a thick margin on top of that? Hogwarts could be affordable to a wide-swathe of the wizarding populace through sliding-scale tuition fees.

With this in mind, Hermione Curie (Granger) sets out to use her field healer and master arithmancer abilities to the fullest (if she had to invent a couple of things earlier than they actually happened in her old future, so be it). Not to mention that in her very-biased-opinion, the wizarding world needs to be dragged out of its old prejudices, kicking and screaming if necessary. But who is that particular prefect? Her mind itches at seeing him…

Jan Verrault (OC) // Sixth Year Ravenclaw // Relentless Investigator

Sixth-year Ravenclaw, a stickler for the rules. He’s (rightly) suspicious of Tom and rather annoyed at what seemed to be the Slytherin prefect’s Teflon reputation (you can throw practically any accusation at him and it wouldn’t stick). Julia’s prefect partner, though she’s frequently exasperated at his obsession with enacting all the rules, no matter how trivial it seemed.

Jan is the Dutch version of John (and also the version of John in Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, Czech… the list goes on, but he’s of Dutch descent). Basically, I picked it because a) it’s a really common name and b) together with his last name, tangentially echoed a different character that inspired him (not a HP character).

Camellia (Daiyu) Lee // Sixth Year Hufflepuff // Lady of Hufflepuff

Sixth-year Hufflepuff. Strong contender for sixth-year Hufflepuff prefect’s position before it fell to Ethel Macmillan, she’s graceful about her loss and had moved on from it. An elegant and ethereally beautiful witch, she shares Advanced Ancient Runes with Hermione. Camellia is practically the number one on this subject in all Hogwarts, as she had learned warding at her mother’s knee (her mother was a warding grandmaster). Always having the time to help her housemates, she occupies a special position in the heart of the Hufflepuffs.

When she was young and her parents had just moved to Europe following her father’s diplomatic assignment, Jan was the rare kid who could actually speak Mandarin, albeit haltingly, since his father was a wizard who was also a businessman.

Oswin Orpington (OC) // Seventh Year Slytherin // The Apt Administrator

Seventh-year Slytherin prefect. As you might already know, there is an Orpington that was the Minister of Magic sometime in the 1800s (Evangeline Orpington). So, even if he wasn't from the Sacred 28, I consider his family to be rather well-established. His given name 'Oswin' came from Old English elements os "god" and wine "friend", so, god-friend (friend of god).

I take it to imply that he knows who's about to be a god (or the closest thing to it) and knows how to be friendly to them. He's the kind of person who's more comfortable backstage than in the spotlight.

Which currently updating fics are you following? Any ones in particular that you have to go read asap when they update?

So my “following” list on ffnet is public, but that list is long and a good portion those fics are probably abandoned(not to mention it obviously won’t include anything I read on AO3, which is where I do most of my reading), so I’ll narrow it down to a few that have updated fairly recently and/or seem to update on a semi regular basis.

The Pendulum of the Mind by AvaJune (rated M, time travel but post Hogwarts, doesn’t follow basically any Tomione cliches so that’s neat)

Strange Attractors by Mistakes_ and_Experiments (rated M, monster length fic, time travel trope. I’m pretty sure this one updates on Saturdays but not every Saturday. This one is just a really easy to read fic in that it’s captivating and distracting but doesn’t require a ton of attention or focus. It’s one of those fics that I reread when I’m tired or stressed)

The Diary by @littlemulattokitten (Rated M, time travel but not really(read it any you’ll get what I mean), warnings for major canon divergence and character bashing. I drop everything when this is updated. As one of the first Tomiones I found, this fic has a special place in my heart. This is a really good example of what fluffy! or good!Tom should be in that he’s kind and considerate to Hermione and isn’t playing the villain, but bits of his canon personality of being a narcissistic little demon with no self awareness are still very much present. One of the only hurt/comfort genre fics I’ve found)

Mutt by Twisted Tale (rated E, an AU in which wizards are kept as pets. Really dark, read the author’s warnings before reading. This fic doesn’t have a ton written for it yet but whenever I see it has updated I click immediately)

infinitum by @quitethesardonic​ (rated T, time travel, Hermione has amnesia, author is probably annoyed with me for tagging her every time someone asks me for recs)

Dangerous Professions by @darklordriddle​ (rated M, Professor Granger AU, canon divergent/no time travel, this fic is like my niece - whenever she sends me a chapter of this to beta for, I drop everything ASAP and I love seeing people love her as much as I do)

Madam Umbridge Home for Wayward Girls by @alovelyvillain​ (rated E, Victorian muggle AU, no lie though - this fic is so intense it gives me anxiety. I love it and squeal with excitement when it’s updated, but I’m a very emotional reader and this fic gives me the same weird bodily reactions that I get when watching a horror movie, looking at spiders, or waiting in the emergency room. Sometimes I have to remind myself to chill the fuck out when reading this one)
