you have to learn. get a library card. collect and read and store as many physical books as possible. stay educated on your history. talk to queer elders, as few as there are. talk to them about their lives. build local communities. build a garden. consume art, like, actually. consume and talk and discuss it with others. the curtains are not just blue. consume culture. cook different foods. invite people over for dinner. talk. love. have opinions on art. you have to have art. you have to have kindness. you have to learn. you have to stay alive.

This isn't Greta Thunberg’s fault, she couldn’t have been a better ally, but it’s so disheartening how her kidnapping and mistreatment for five days have rallied so many people, when what she went through is only a fraction of a fraction of what thousands of Palestinian men, women, girls, and boys, who have been routinely kidnapped, tortured, and raped to unimaginably evil lengths for months or even years, often to the point of death, have endured and are still enduring as we speak.

And I know that’s the whole point of why she did what she did. She knew that, as a young high-profile white European girl, her mistreatment would result in more uproar, and she intended to use that privilege to raise awareness of what is happening to Palestinians. That’s why the first thing she did after her release, when the press asked her to speak in detail about her own mistreatment, was to shift the conversation instead to how Israel continues to escalate its genocide against Palestinians.

I just wish people understood her message and gave the same energy toward helping Palestinians without waiting for a White Westerner to risk their life first.

I’m getting to the age where the little kids I grew up with are starting to look like adult strangers on the street

I never ate chicken noodle soup as a kid. I had heard that it helped when you were sick, saw it in every TV show and trope in media, and all my friends grew up eating it alongside cold medicine.

My mother hated it. “It’s a can of noodles and soggy chicken and salt,” she said, “it tastes like shit.” She never bought it.

Honestly, we never really treated for anything when we were sick, unless it was a health emergency resulting in a trip to the urgent care. My brother and I grew up learning to walk the pain off; to man up and work through it. We never had those immunity shots from that granola health foods store, and my sleeves were always snot-stained from wiping my nose when we were out of toilet paper. As a child, I developed a quirk where I remember ibuprofen exists only after hour three of my writhing in pain.

I’m an adult now, and I have the responsibility to take care of myself when I’m sick. So, while walking around the grocery store and seeing the small store-brand can of chicken noodle soup, I picked it up off the shelf. And after cooking it on my stovetop burner, I realized something.

It really does taste like shit.
