A Tiny House Cautionary Tale (Don’t Buy from SoCal Cottages) - A Story Taken from the Facebook of Tiny House People
A TINY HOUSE CAUTIONARY TALE - (Link to the story, buy you have to join to Facebook group to see it)
“Some of us in Los Angeles stumbled across a stranded tiny house in our area this week. The trailer tongue was destroyed. One of our members who is a construction professional took a closer look and found that there were a LOT of issues with the build. We were able to figure out that it was built by So Cal Cottages and that the owner is in Santa Cruz (in Northern CA). We don’t know how it got where it was or how it got damaged. We don’t know who the owner is, so we couldn’t talk to them for details. The information we have, we got from the movers who came to tow the house away on a flatbed - our construction pro member happened to get there right when the movers were there and he also made some of his own assessments. Some of the issues our construction pro found: - That frame was not designed for that house - The i-beams are not correctly welded and not on the correct axis. Should have used double box beams that are fully enclosed. Frame supports and welds are not sufficient. New welds are not hot enough, not tempered correctly (very brittle), and not sufficient to support the extended structure - Osb and insulation are exposed - Metal to wood contact on exterior of the structure - Insufficient bolting He said he could go on. tongue emoticon The builders, So Cal Cottages, has a bad reputation and several BBB complaints, so steer clear of them! And in general, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do your research and be smart about choosing a builder or doing your own build. I have no idea if this house crashed in the middle of the street or something, or caused any damage to any other vehicles or property. I seriously hope not. And I really hope this wasn’t someone’s home that they paid a lot of money for and is basically unsalvageable (So Cal Cottages markets their structures for offices, studios, etc., not just homes). But situations like this unfortunately could reflect on tiny houses overall and could make it difficult for the rest of us who are being safe and responsible.”
Thank you for the tip tinyhousedarling!
Watch out for the site it's going around that may be totally bogus. Not to mention they seem to be using other people stuff and trying to sell it just totally uncool.
