When you meet her for the first time, she doesn’t always let you in. She has a bit of a guard up, wondering if she can trust you and if you will be calm in chaotic situations. Once you’re in her inner circle, there’s no escaping it. She will always remember who you are and be thrilled to see you, even if you’re only gone for a few minutes. I feel so overwhelmed in my love for her, wanting her to have the best life while we both exist on this planet. Perhaps it sounds a bit crazy...to love an animal like that. What is the most important thing in your life and do you have the tools to help grow that relationship? For me, it’s my dog Peaches. It took me a while to step back and admit that I needed to seek out a training program to help guide Peaches through this unpredictable world and remind her that I have her back. Through some online research and messaging dog owners, I found @flashdogtraining. They asked me several questions to get to know Peaches beforehand, were willing to work with my schedule so that I could coincide it with a trip I had planned and included training sessions after the program wrapped up to make sure we stayed on track. Possibly an irrational fear, but I was worried that I’d get back from my trip and Peaches wouldn’t be her loving self, but thankfully she’s still the same affectionate dog with better behavior. It’s only been a few days since she’s been back and I’ve already noticed that I’m less anxious now that I have the tools and can work on them during walks, down time and meeting strangers. If you’re feeling like maybe that best friend bond could be even stronger if little things could be avoided, then I’d suggest looking into a training program. What you might find is that you actually need some training to help be a better dog owner and advocate for your dog...because geez it’s gotta be exhausting for your dog and even you sometimes to try to figure out how to respond to every little situation. With a little consistency, the proper tools and good communication, you can flow more positive energy into the world together. Colorado, you have the most beautiful rivers, rocky mountains, peaceful forests, glowing sunshine and unpredictable weather. My heart feels for the land that we must protect, the land under threat from development. Under the Colorado Outdoor Recreation Economy (CORE) Act, 400,000 acres of public land in Colorado would be protected by establishing new wilderness areas and removing areas such as the Thompson Divide region from oil and gas development. It’s been 42 days since the US House passed the CORE Act but Senator Cory Gardner has yet to sign it. He is also the only Colorado Senator who hasn't sponsored a single Colorado wilderness bill since passage of the Wilderness Act in 1964. Social media can be a powerful tool when used for good and a dangerous weapon if we aren’t careful of what we are saying. When we come on apps like this, we’re looking for positive interactions (ones that send dopamine to our brains). When you feel depressed after spending too much time on an app, most likely you are comparing, assuming someone’s life is better than yours based on their photos or what they appear to be doing. But we don’t always know the full story. A lot of times, those people might be struggling, but we take the only information we see and write our own story. Our brains fixate on negative comments and events more than positive ones because the negative ones require more thinking. And sometimes to be fully engaged on this app means taking time outside of your interactions in person, investing focused time behind the screen. I know some of you feel the same, but we all keep coming back here because we see the positive impact of social media and our views on society. Tough conversations spark change. People are connecting across the globe, spreading new ideas, and creating some really rad things. How we treat each other really matters. Listening is sometimes better than talking if it might ruin someone’s day. And mob mentality can sometimes cause the downfall of someone or something because we didn’t take the time to research the whole story. I hurt for those of you I’ve watched have a decline in mental health because of social media negativity. I want us all to do better and to realize we’re all human beings behind a screen. Let’s think before we speak. Let’s not make assumptions about people on here without asking and let’s try to educate ourselves on issues without relying on only this to be our only news stream. I am so grateful for everyone reading this and those who have chosen throughout the years to follow me. I’m coming for you, NOLA! Wish it was in a van, but grateful for flights that can get you there fast. @irietoaurora and I are hosting the first-ever New Orleans Vanlife Gathering. I’m really proud of all the hard work Noami + Dustin have put in to make this an all inclusive event, including marginalized communities who might otherwise not attend. This summer has been jam packed with gatherings (and we’ve done a lot of learning + reflecting), but we think this one truly captures what we’ve wanted to achieve at all of our events. We’ll be having discussions on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, mental health, and environmental awareness and initiatives. Not to mention, we’ll be celebrating with a Cohon de Lait dinner, pancake jazz brunch, Halloween costumes and flair. It’s a lot of work to plan an event, but it feels so magical seeing all the connections made when people come together for an intentional and educational weekend. The Earth doesn’t need us to thrive, but we need the Earth to survive. We can do better to take care of our planet, and that means making more conscious decisions about what we put in our bodies and what we purchase. Here’s a few easy things you can do to make a small difference: 🌎 Eat local and find ways to buy at zero waste, bulk stores when you can. 🌎 Reuse packaging as many times as possible. These @pranasnacks bags are resealable and allow me to use the bags for leftovers and snacks. 🌎 Donate or sell used clothes and gear to give it a second chance. 🌎 Create less waste overall. Recycling isn’t the solution. It’s easy to think that by having less trash and more recycling, we’re being more waste efficient. However, a lot of what you recycles ends up going into the landfill because it’s not actually recyclable or it’s mixed with items that are not recyclable. Buying less packaged items will reduce that effect. 🌎 Hold companies accountable for their sustainability initiatives. Engage in conversations with the brands you work with and buy from to see how they can reduce and offset their environmental impact. When I asked @pranasnacks, I found that the bulk of their impact came from agricultural, and by choosing ingredients that were 100% organic, they were able to reduce greenhouse emissions and the impact of fertilizers and pesticides. We’re not perfect, but we can try each day to do something small in our routine that can shift our actions. We’re constantly rewriting our stories, leaving the past behind and shifting completely into another space. As we do so, we take the lessons learned to help influence who we are today. The more we can shift our perspective, the more we can understand why people change. Most of our lives don’t operate in a straight line, but rather, we are zig zagging and figuring it out along the way. When you leave an old life behind, you shed a layer of yourself and allow someone or something else to step into its place. I’m still learning to let go of my attachments and ideas, to really stay true to myself and to let happiness rule the day. This is the first tiny home I lived in. It sparked a journey I had no idea existed. I never thought I’d meet so many others traveling, living, working, playing and creating in small spaces. I never thought there would be a need to bring all of us together in different places. I couldn’t have imagined the lifelong friendships and connections that would happen. Or how many entrepreneurs would be able to sustain their passions. It’s pretty wild and mind blowing when I really stop to think about it. I am so grateful for the people that encourage me to be a better person and those who have sat across from me to speak their truths and listen. We might not speak the same language, but we often communicate in other ways...like kisses. Sometimes we’re howling together in a gibberish that is our way of having an engaging conversation. I’ve learned a lot about myself from owning a dog, especially one that has wild eyes and a beautiful gift of compassion. Perhaps the greatest thing in life is to have an adventure companion to help you see things beneath the surface. So much love for these two humans who have shaped me into who I am today. @vanlifediaries started as an idea over coffee five years and now it’s an international community. We organize gatherings and meetups around the world, share stories, co-authored a book and helped produce a documentary. Who knows where we’re headed next, but I know wherever we end up, it will always be doing something we’re passionate about doing. It’s been so special having Jared + Jonny here in the states recently. In the past, we only had short stints of time together and this was the first time we really got to know each other through our highs and lows. The other day, I was interviewed on @newscpr about the traveling solo, finding community and perceptions from family + friends. A lot has happened since that day I lived in a camper trailer four years ago. It was isolating because I didn’t know anyone else living small. The first couple I met was Kit + JR of @idletheorybus and it inspired me to eventually hop in a van by myself. Hearing their stories propelled me to work on a farm for a season and explore partnerships with outdoor brands. And as our friendship grew, so did the van community as a whole. @womenontheroad was a space where we had a voice to share our joys and struggles. @vanlifediaries gatherings brought us all together, allowing us to have a family and a place to share our tips + tricks from the road. Today, we are all still figuring this thing out—how to navigate traveling, working remotely and all of the communities we are a part of. This one has driven me wild, while also fueling my adventurous soul. A few weekends ago, we hit a local backpacking trail, crossing over raging rivers and trudging through snow. It felt good to know that we kept going though, finding solitude in the trees to spread out, hang a hammock and journal. The reward for making it to camp before dark? @pranasnacks, along with energy bars and backpacking meals. Having wholesome, organic snacks helps me feel good on the trail and the resealable bags keep them fresh in my pack while I log new miles. Recently, I’ve been cutting down on meat, fish and dairy consumption (unless it’s local) to help reduce my environmental footprint. Hi! It’s rare to have a photo of the three of us. The past few months have been crazy, mostly because we’ve been trying to balance our work and travels. It’s funny how your life can change in an instant, but like a Polaroid photo, you have to wait to see how it turns out. It turns out, I’m pretty dang happy with my life right now. It keeps getting better the more time goes on. This weekend, we’re heading up to the Teton Valley Vanlife Gathering and I’m looking forward to all the hugs. It’s really incredible that so many people come from so many different places to meet up one spot. “There is no second nature.” I saw that quote the first time when I read about the @backcountry and The Nature Conservancy partnership. It stuck with me as I started to wonder what it would be like to live in a world where there were no canyons or boulders to climb. And it’s already a sad reality to see the public land we have all camped on being destroyed by those who aren’t educated in LNT practices. We’ve become quite dependent on these spaces, but it’s difficult to know how to take action or make a difference that leads to a more positive impact. In many ways, this has caused me to speak up about best practices, such as cleaning chalk and packing out trash (even when it’s not yours to begin with). But I also like to examine the companies that I’m working with and buying their products from to see if they are doing their part to give back. Since 2008, @backcountry and The Nature Conservancy have partnered to protect millions of acres of land, thousands of river miles and develop hundreds of marine projects. Backcountry provides funding through a customer donation area on their website as well as participating in clean ups that help restore critical land. I was asked to test out some of @backcountry’s new climbing collection and share my thoughts about it.
